He's not out till Jan is he? Thought I heard till September or so.

I just read October on another thread.

Even still, I stand my 'gamble' comment - 722 days injured in his career is staggering when you remember he's only 25. City's spine is full of injury prone players - Kompany, Gundogan and Aguero.

If he can stay fit and is used right, it could be one of the best bargains in a long time. But if not he struggles...

PSG want Coutinho and have already spoken to his people and Liverpool.

How much could Liverpool realistically get for Coutinho? If you could get a seriously high number (70 million plus) you might be doing well because his obvious immense talent doesn't always translate into consistency.

    not a ****ing hope
He is yet to turn 24, and Di Maria at 26 went there for 63 million after a dud of a season. Given the amount of teams fighting in the transfer market this summer with all the manager changes etc. prices will inflate also.

Interesting piece from the PSG owner
In an exclusive interview to be published Friday ... Nasser Al-Khelaïf assesses the season and announces that his club will "start a new cycle". The president of PSG has yet to come to terms with the [club's] elimination in the quarter-final of the Champions League against Manchester City: "[it's] the worst moment since my arrival in Paris, it's still very difficult to accept".

According to him, the verdict on the past season is negative. He reflects on the [best] way to revive his team after delivering this clear statement: "If we continue like that, we won't get to [where we want] ... It's time to change

Could be that it's going to be a big transfer summer on and off the pitch

Trouble nowadays with money involved in transfers is not how much a player is worth but who comes knocking.

Di Matteo confirmed as Villa manager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I reckon it would take 2 or 3 teams to be looking for Couthino to drive the price north of £50m.

Steve Clarke as assistant is the rumour! Could be a shrewd move

Di Maria had season at real madrid and was wanted by psg, Couthinio has had inconsistant seasons at liverpool.

Players like Kane will go for 70+ million. PLayers like couthinio do not

You're completely underselling Di Maria. He was Argentina's best player in the world cup and was by far RM MoTM in the CL Final.

What point are you trying to make about Di Maria there? One bad season doesn't make a player bad.

Yeah but a couple of years ago PSG paid E50M for David Luiz. Going by this logic Coutinho is probably worth 1 Billion Dollars

As I said, other clubs wnated him, price was massively inflated on the back of this.

Thats the only hope of Couthinos value rising to Luiz level of pricing or beyond.

Seems to be a lot of chatter now that Simeone is the man they want. Why the hell do they give Blanc a new contract, only to sack him immediately afterwards? He'll make out like a bandit....

Coutinho is a very inconsistent player. He can look awesome one day and then again three games later. He isn't worth anything like that money. At a stretch he might fetch £35 million.

I'd say Coutinho is about as good a #10 as Luiz is a CB relative to the other players currently playing in their positions in world football.

They spent that much on Pastore & Moura who never amounted to much plus Liverpool are not so skint they have to sell which makes the price go up more. Not like PSG are good bluffers.
Even over that as a Liverpool fan I'd turn it down. Sets a bad precedence that they sell their most of the best players 3 years in a row.
They can have Benteke, Balotelli or Moreno tho :p

I'm not underselling anyone. Obviously Di Maria goes for more money directly after the World Cup or Champions League final than he does after a comparatively poor season. That's not making someone a good or bad player, that's just basic economics.

If you assume everybody involved in soccer transfer deals are reactionary fools willing to adjust commodity prices by millions of euros based on short term fluctuations in form then your theory is solid.

If someone offered liverpool anywere near 40-50 million theyd have to take it. Couthino can be a special player on his day but those days dont come often enough. Firmino i think could be a better player now with a year of premier league under his belt.

Another one bites the dust at Barca as Bartra is headed to Dortmund for €8M.
Graham Hunter ‏@BumperGraham 27m27 minutes ago Barcelona, Spain
    #Barça confirm #Dortmund pay #Bartra €8m buyout clause

Sport Witness ‏@Sport_Witness 21m21 minutes ago
Bartra's clause was €40m, but he had an agreement that if he didn't play 30% of games, he could go for €8m.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,854 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

Iirc thats the same clause that Thiago had that Bayern took advantage of. I haven't seen too much of him but even just based of his rep 8m euro is a snip for him. Hummels replacement I guess

The argument that someone like Coutinho wouldn't fetch as high a fee as Di Maria on the basis of him not being as good is flawed. A players value is hugely dependent upon his and his clubs willingness or eagerness for the move.

Carroll and Aguero were similarly priced as were Di Maria and Suarez. In all cases, their fees were such because of the circumstances; Liverpool's desperation to replace Torres, Suarez's eagerness to go to Barca, Di Maria apparently not being all that keen with the prospect of swapping Madrid for Manchester

If Coutinho dosent push for the move, and PSG with all their money really want him, I don't think it's ridiculous to suggest he could go for over 60m, particularly given the value of the new TV deal for English clubs

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,854 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

    The most un-Wenger signing ever?
Arsenal have reportedly triggered the release clause in Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy's contract.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a remarkable campaign in 2015-16, scoring 24 league goals to help fire the Foxes to the most unlikely of title successes.

Vardy has previously outlined his intention to stay with the newly-crowned Premier League champions having only signed a new deal earlier this year, but that contract includes a £20m release clause for any club in the Champions League.

Arsenal have now met that release clause, according to the Guardian, although Leicester are still understood to be desperate to keep hold of the England international

that said in the current climate 20m would not be terrible value at all should that release clause info be true even if he is 29 already and the lad does know where the net is.

I wonder what an "England team in 2024" would look like now, and how they'll fare over the next few years

Mad that only 3 of them went on to play to any sort of PL standard at senior level, and even then Sinclair and Richards went off the rails, only Walcott comes close to anything and he could still have been much more

£20m + £1 will get this one done.

Vardy at that price in today's market is a steal.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,854 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

Jokes aside for 20m which in the market at the moment is not big money really especially when you are talking about an English CF who just won the league as the top scorer at his club it really isn't that much. He can play the lone forward role which would fit Arsenals formation and would offer something very different to Giroud.

could be a very shrewd move by Wenger

Considering there's no transfer fee it's a great bit of business considering shirt sales and the like but it's still a very high risk high reward move. If it goes well you've one of the best strikers who'll bag a good few goals while striking fear into defences and also being a solid mentor for the young pups, but if he decides to go full retard with the third person ego diva sh*t and try and think he's number one it could be poison for a club trying to rewrite its wrongs. If this is a one year thing you cannot afford to structure a team around him like what was done at PSG and Milan, so it'll be interesting how they give the baby his bottle while building a solid team for the next 5 years using players like Martial properly where he can flourish. The league is going to have a sh*t tonne of massive personalities though, which is a great thing, and there's bound to be several more to add to that before the end of August.
