A lot of women's matches are one-sided .... 6-1 6-2 kinda thing. No-one wants to sit through 3 sets of that.

probably only going to be two set then

Kind of. Men's (MAG) and women's gymnastics (WAG) is marked differently because men and women do different events. You can't mark balance beam (women) and pommel horse (men) the same way because those events require completely different skills. But both require large amounts of balance, strength and flexibility (yes, the best pommel workers have great hip, shoulder and leg flexibility!). Vault is the only event that MAG and WAG truly share* and it's judged the same way - height off the table, distance from the table, form and landing alignment and control.

But WAG is more popular than MAG in most countries. I could write an essay about that, but I think one reason is because the different events make it harder to compare the women to the men, so when they watch WAG, people don't feel like they're watching a "lesser" version of the sport.

*Floor is shared too, but WAG requires music and dance between tumbling whereas MAG has no music/dance requirements.
You can always spot when someone who actually knows WTF they're talking about on the subject falls into a thread. :D

In Tennis I reckon the womens games are actually more competitive and less predictable than the mens sport.
    Same with Running and athletics.

Apart from that time in the 80s that that Eastern European woman won everything going from the men's 100m to the marathon.

You know the one with the Adam's apple......

But the pay is fair no? The money is attributed based on the income. Men's sports just pull in bigger numbers. Many women sports fans prefer to watch men competing. Just a fact.

Add to that - the top woman tennis player wouldn't even challenge say the 50th best man. I heard a story that the 100th ranked man hammered one of the williams in an exhibition match. Not sure how true that is.

203rd in the world. Took both of them on one after the other. Don't think either was number one at the time though.

Thanks meta: I don't have much knowledge of the sport (as I am sure was obvious).

Wow 203rd?! And I thought 100th was shocking.

Men are an awful lot naturally stronger than women, I was looking it up a while back and I was actually surprised at how much stronger men were than women I didn't honestly think the gap would be so big.I'm no athlete but based on reading I'd almost fancy my chances of beating Serena Williams in a fight (if such an opportunity ever arose).

Men have much greater lung volume per body mass, larger hearts, much greater muscle mass per body weight and significantly greater upper body strength.Men also have better natural hand to eye coordination than women.

I don't see why this man had to resign though. I mean he only told the truth, the women's game is carried by the the men. Novak Djokovic quoted the figures when questioned about it, the men's game on average for the four Grandslams draws 600 million more viewers.

You earn what you draw. There is no equality in paying women the same prize money when they're not earning it. They're only patronising them.

Djokovic was made to apologise for relaying a fact. That kind of scares me somewhat.

It's obvious that American tennis players attract more viewers in the most important market in the world and therefore US athletes should be paid more than Europeans and Asians.

In fairness they were both pretty young at the time, 16 and 17 I believe. Serena has..."bulked-up" since then.

Well to be fair, if we take this to it's logical conclusion we could say "It's obvious that soccer players in England attract more viewers in the most important market in the world and therefore soccer players in England should be paid more than in Africa and Asia"

And we would be right, football players in England earn incredibly higher amounts than in Asia or Africa, and do so because they attract more viewers and in one of/the most profitable market.

Yes but prize money in major tournaments is awarded by achievement, so if England get knocked out in the group stages they receive less than Cameroon would for reaching the final - irrespective of their commercial worth.

you're are conflating domestic competition and international competition. The points Billy86 made were with reference to domestic competition. Notice how he says "soccer players in England" and not english soccer players. International competition has a different commercial model.
