Back Boiler with Gas or Oil or Solar panels?

My parents live in a Semi detached 3 bedroom standard house

There is no gas or oil heating at all, they only use coal fire but its an old design with a back boiler and heats 10 radiators and the hot water tank all at the same time.

They are getting older now and i think its time to get something else for them because shovelling coal isn't going to be easier in the future.

Whats the best combo? they want to keep the open fire and want it heating water and rads still
I don't think gas will do because they don't want a line rental.

    So Oil ??

Can solar panels heat water and provide heating ?

How would the layout work ?\

Solar panels are realistically only for hot water, not heating, unless you want to go down the megabucks hot storage for underfloo heating.
Solar panels are very practical for houses with high usage/ volume of hot water.
    ie 6 teenagers

Grant. Vortex oil boiler with zoned heating is best option.
    Upstairs, downstairs & hot water.

No need to heat upstairs all day, especially as eldery will like to have it on a lot more downstairs during the day as apposed to a working family.

You need a good plumber to drop out to design, explain the system and give accurate price.
Dual heating with fire is not a problem. But needs a dual coil cylinder in the hotpress, or a special "System Link" to combine them.

Very common system you need, but get a professional to call or Post your area and one of the guys here might be of help.
    Tom.
