Clerics in Mayo to bless the roads in bid to improve driver safety
The move is part of a broader road safety campaign.

    Whats worse is....
This comes as part of a broader initiative on road safety by Mayo County Council, with its road safety department and the local emergency services throwing their weight behind it.

    Seriously?
Perhaps we should sacrifice some lambs to stop road deaths country wide while we're at it?

This type of thing would have been right at home in an episode of Father Ted,

So if I travel to Mayo I have to drive on blessed roads? Is there no equality here, are they leaving any roads unblessed for those who do not want to travel religious roads? Would it not be better for those who wish it to have their cars blessed and leave the roads secular?

Ah now OP, would you not be so quick to judge! Sure there might be something it in, it's no worse than what they teach at the seminary...

    Wrong kind of "holey".

Who needs to drive with care and attention on the roads when they've got a Padre Pio sticker in the windscreen to take care of them

This is the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened isn't it? Maybe not in Mayo but I remember a thread on this in the past.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

In a rational world, road deaths would stop God.

Actually you know, you could make a nice little ceremony of blessing the cars. Every year you take your car to the church car park, or somewhere else handy, and have it all nice and clean with a white ribbon on it. Everyone prays over the cars then they are sprinkled with holy water.

Or you could have a blessed puddle of holy water that everyone drives through.

You could have an additional pocket on your windscreen to take a certiicate to show that it is a holy car that has been blessed. Maybe sections of carparks could be set aside for blessed cars so they don't have to mix with the pagan ones.

The government could set up a tax to cover this, of course it would have to be applied to everyone regardless of whether they were car owners, or religious, to cover the cost of the special car parks. Its only fair, I mean the vast majority of people would want to have blessed cars, wouldn't they?

Excellent find. Jesus is my co-pilot. So if there is a road death on these blessed roads the first thing we must ask is, "What did we do wrong that would cause god to forsake us?" If the pries can bless the road to make it safer, maybe a bunch of priest could get together and combine their superpowers to bless the whole world.

Only if the roads are nearly full will they get priority, so we should be grand. :D

Is there anything to be said for saying another mass on the road?

What about a driveby blessing? If the priest can talk fast enough, organise a bus.

You don't need a bus if you've got a mobile altar

Maybe the Church can have a word with the insurers about a discount on all blessed cars, everyone would be a Christian all of a sudden!!

What would happen if the water froze and caused an accident? Who is at fault? Act of God?

    Mayo

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

In my defence, I only sneer at religious people who die in road accidents.

Nope we're sneering at idiots who think sprinking water on a road and muttering mumbo-jumbo can make a blind bit of difference.

So suggesting that blessing roads isn't the right way to reduce road fatalities = sneering people who died in road accidents?
