There hasn't been a proper thunderstorm in our area since 1985, that's how rare they are! Sure we've had showers with some rumbles of thunder and the odd flash of lightning but they don't really count.

That's crazy considering how changeable our climate is

Yeah, it's the only thing that really disappoints me about the Irish weather. I was in Washington DC during their 'derecho' thunderstorms in 2012 and it was fantastic.

I reckon the west of Ireland definitely see's more thunderstorms than in the eastern half of the country. Most of the time posts are made about thunderstorms they mainly happen in the west.

Even on the rare occassions that we do get warm/hot weather there is never really a thundery breakdown, yet this is something that happens regularly in the UK during warm to cool transitions. In continental Europe, thunderstorms seem to happen regularly regardless of temperature so why do thunderstorms avoid Ireland so much?

Am I the only one who doesn't care about thunderstorms?

    No
    I like dry weather
Thunderstorms are wet and the dishwasher also doesn't like them for some reason as they mess with the electrics !

There was forecasts for some thunder yesterday evening. There was none except for a strike or two in West Cork. Thunder is mentioned in the forecasts this evening and tonight especially in the south west. It would be exciting if met Eireann issue an Orange warning for thunderstorms. The warning would have to be near the scale of that classic night back in July 1985.

Would you like thunder like this? Photo taken in the UK on 19 July 2014 - during the thunderstorms which stroke the east of the UK after the heat hit the peak at 32c during that Summer on the 18th. These thunderstorms made July 2014 a very wet month overall in East Anglia even though the rest of the month (outside of these thunderstorms) had very little rain.
