Showers have sprung to life on the west end of the Wicklow mountains, on the Wicklow/Kildare border. Orographic lift and perhaps some convergence helping?

A couple of very severe cells passed through central Switzerland yesterday. Was around 27 C yesterday and very pleasant. Was out with the kids and saw / heard the first one approaching.

Ran for the car with them and got in just before it got really bad. There was pretty big hail (not golf ball size mind, but the biggest I had ever seen).

The intensity was something to behold, drove home and the noise of the hail against the car was frightening. There was almost constant lighting. Saw some poor souls caught out in it.

Got home and enjoyed the view from inside. Sun came out again but there was still plenty of electricity in the air with some infrequent but massive strikes for the rest of the night!

Nothing has lit up in the mountains yet but I've brought the washing in after looking at Netweather.

I know that, I was pointing out that there was no rain out of it therefore it was not showing on the radar.

I heard from people in Germany that they experienced huge storms yesterday with damaging hail, dented a lot of cars. Seen a friends car in Germany last year that had been pummelled by hail, some sight. Will be there soon , might get to see a few storms :)

Lightning from this, just north West of Castlebar

Aye specific area on the ukmo Lightning map now
Appears to be inland east of Achil?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,170 ✭✭✭WheatenBriar

Noticeable convection over the south Wicklow mountains now already making showers there which may bring a few bangs at some point in Carlow?
The convection there is quite a good bit south of yesterday's and not as far inland ,maybe 10 miles as opposed to 20
Beautiful meanwhile here on the coast with a strong sea breeze now feeding that convection inland

Scattered thundery showers will form as the cool maritime air is exposed to daytime heating. One or two non-mesocyclonic tornadoes are not ruled out due to low cloud bases and weak vertical wind shear.
