What is the deal with all these people with no transport expecting you to deliver?

"Are ya ever it *insert remote back arse of nowhere*?"

Would ya ever f*ck off. If you want it, come and get it.

Yes I think there are people who are joking with the offers but otherwise it is a very good site, I sold lots of stuff there and also bought few, very pleased with it :)

If I write in my offer something like "please serious offers only" it seems to do the trick, plus also state the minimum amount for the offers.

Had a good experience recently. Put a load of old harden bricks up for free. First of many offers was agreed. Some eastern European woman who was very thankfull who needed then to block up a fireplace in her new home with her family. She bought our household some chocolate to say thanks. Also said how they were of great use in a PM later in the week.

Moral of the story. Some people are *****, weed then out. I don't deal with anyone with 20 negative feedback unless their positive feedback is like 400

    This afternoon.......

Have something listed. Potential buyer asks me will I take X % of asking. I didn't really want to but I said ok just to get rid of it. Messaged back within 5 minutes accepting. Got a reply to say "got it elsewhere".

Checked their comments. They bid for the same item from 10 different sellers one after the other. Then bought from one of them and didn't bother withdrawing their offers from the other 9. Totally against the spirit of adverts and a sure fire WAY TO P*SS PEOPLE OFF!

That's a particular pain in the ass, happens a lot with some type of ads.

I'd usually go and check the buyers history/comments before accepting an offer to try and weed them out.

Adverts is a seriously under estimated tool, I sold a lidl jigsaw for 3.50 whereas I would be stuck with it.

I had something for sale and same person bid same amount 3 times even though each time I politely said it was too low.

Say your selling a phone on adverts and a potential buyer wants to meet up to have a look and buy the phone.
What's stopping him from running off with the phone? How is that combated?

Well in fairness that's not adverts responsibility.

But to answer your question, nothing really. Take the usual precautions - check their feedback scores, read their comments etc.

Tell them you'll meet them at your local Garda Station maybe.....? :D

Very common yeah. Seems to me as if a lot on it don't drive and plenty more would be prepared to haggle with ya over a tenner's worth of petrol. Then of course theres the high percentage of cnuts that just want something for nothing and would also like you to deliver it to them while you're at it!

Meet in a coffee shop like a normal person and do the deal there .

Or in front of a super market ?. OR if you have someone who can come with you ?.

I learned the hard way always meet people in public places !!!!

Just write 'No swaps thanks, cash sale only'. Cut and paste it everytime a new user says it.

Look at it this way, everytime it is said it means that your ad will appear higher in the search results as it is more active and some users also sort search results by 'last commented'.

Could adverts change their model such that when people bid they actually put the money into escrow?

Cos the amount of people tyre kicking and low balling with no intention of doing a deal, it's just nuts.

If the money was in escrow, the seller can just accept or reject and it forces the buyer to make a genuine offer instead of offering a half eaten sandwich and a copy of Garth Brooks on tape.

That make and offer, you accept, the pull out.

    Leave negative feedback.

Oh I would have but they didn't make it as a formal offer, just asked "would you accept X?" in the comments section.

So I replied that I would if they made the offer formally.

Over the past 6 years, I've done 100s of adverts meet ups, never had anything nicked. Very nearly got sold a dodgy phone a couple of years ago, but lucky I noticed before I handed any cash over.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 284 ✭✭Jan Laco

I read alot of negative comments about adverts on this site, so I advertised my car on another site...but was getting low views. So I advertised on adverts and I found it much much better. I sold the car to the 1st interested who matched my intentions. I got more messages in 3 days on aderts than I got in one week on the other site.

Maybe I'm just not as upset from having to read an extra message or two as others, but I got what I paid for.

I've given up on Adverts, it used to be a great site to do business through but in recent years its full of tyre kickers, wasters and downright mongs. If I'm paying for a listing to adverts and you comment under my ad offer ya 350 for a brand new 6S with an asking price of lets say 650 then I should be able to leave you negative feedback, or my peev is Reserve 600, OFFER: 600, Will you take 450? No, stop wasting my time, there is the price, now P off. Its not the site it used to be and Adverts should do more for those paying for their ads to combat these tyre kickers. Man I seriously hate Adverts in recent times and gone back to done deal unfortunately

I don't allow to pay for my stuff using paypal, ever. This is after I was screwed by a buyer when after number of weeks he filed a chargeback with paypal saying the item "wasn't as described" despite having no issues with it. Obviously paypal ruled in his favor as they always do. Rule of thumb - use PP for buying, don't use for selling, especially when bank transfer is just as easy with online banking these days.

I've recovered money this way eventually, seller claimed to have sent item, but it never arrived. They had no proof of postage except what they had taken a note of themselves, I actually bought two items off them and they charged me twice for postage as the wouldn't package the items together as they easily could have. They had good feedback overall but they had a few negatives about items not arriving. The seller also wanted me to send paypal amount as a gift, I only realised later must be so I couldn't reclaim via PayPal,paypal didn't actually refund me, but I related the entire thing to my credit card company who got me my refund. It was a trivial amount, but I suspected they were making money on loads of little sales and on the postage and probably not getting reported on most or any of it, and getting away with having to pay refunds. This was all after Adverts mods rejected my initial complaint, whee the seller had gotten very annoyed that I told them items never turned up, the they went quiet.
I prefer cash and if possible, to never meet at my home, but generally I'm a buyer, have had OK sales too though.
The idea of escrow as a previous poster mentioned just opens up the possibility of scamsellers getting buyers money regardless, opposed to scam buyers not following up, or even genuine buyers losing their money where an advert may not be as described.

I'm no cheerleader for Adverts.ie but I don't know where all the hate is coming from as its feedback system makes it 100 times safer to use than Done Deal. There are tyrekickers everywhere but you haven't much chance of identifying them on DoneDeal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Adverts is better than most other sites imo.
The comments allows for questions before you meet seller.
The "Make an offer" option means you agree on a price before you meet seller.

My only grief with adverts are the "swappers" and these could easily be handled if adverts chose to do so.

I often sell stuff on adverts and only have the option to pickup in Galway city, still I always get "posted to Dublin?" Can't fight stupid I suppose..

it's really not that difficult to type "sorry, no" to a few lowball or swap offers, and it's a lot less hassle than having randomers ringing you as happens with DoneDeal and Buy&Sell (does B&S still exist?). If you're getting nothing but lowball offers or requests to drive across the country, then you probably have the item priced too high.

The escrow idea is a good one. Really wish they'd implement that. The amount of times I get an offer only to check the bidders other comments and see them make 5/6 other offers on similar items...

Had an interesting run in this week. Guy selling a GoPro - brand new, still sealed - for well below asking. I asked him if he had a receipt, he said yes and posted a picture of it. It was a print your own receipt from the GoPro website. I could see the tracking number, and turns out this receipt belonged to a delivery made to California. I asked him about it, he claimed he ordered it when he was over there 2 weeks ago.

Who goes to California, orders a GoPro to be shipped to them while over there, doesn't open it, comes back to Ireland and lists it on Adverts at a big loss? He ignored that question.

I have noticed that alot of reported users are still acting the donkey, does anyone care anymore. Adverts get their selling fee and let the rest feck off.
