I will be moving myself shortly and noticed this when searching for suppliers.

Surely attempting to bill someone who has just moved in for someone else debt is incorrect?
What is EI's policy on this and if it is not reflective of their policy can they explan why reps are saying different?

    Hi Butters1979,

Thank you for getting in touch.

We are sorry for any confusion. We are unable to comment in relation to the specific query you link to on the Accommodation & Property forum - that is why we requested the details by private message, to look into this individual matter. However, we can certainly advise you here at a general level:

When a customer contacts Electric Ireland to register at their new address and there is a "gap" period (of the property being registered with Electric Ireland) up to the point of the customer moving in, we ask the customer if they would be willing to take over for the "gap" in question. If not, we would just register them from the date they wish to commence being billed, but we would ask for the landlord or letting agent's contact details to get in touch with them regarding the gap period.

If there are significant arrears to Electric Ireland accrued by the previous occupant, we would not insist that a customer take responsibility for this, but we would require a copy of the lease agreement to be sent to the Credit Control department before the registration could be completed.

Do let us know if you have any further queries.

    Kind regards,
    Una
