It is a strange one alright. He obviously wasn't content with potentially being one of the best baseball players ever and wanted to be the best.

I'd love it if one day he comes clean and admits the whole truth about his drug taking. For all we know he could have been on something his whole career. I seriously doubt it was just those 3 years in Texas that he admitted to and the Biogenesis stuff.
Most likely he was...Jose Canseco insinuated it in his book that on the roids as a teenager...I guess it was a bit like cycling during the Armstrong era, if everyone is juicing what chance do you have if you don't...

Swinging much better tonight...biggest crowd I've seen at Yankee Stadium in a while aswell...all those expensive seats behind home plate are taken!

So he finished 1-4 and got to play 3B in the 9th.. Got some send off from the fans too. Such a polarizing character but he was a great player and will always be a legend for me

Yes, I guess the fans appreciated what he did for them and the team. For him as a person things might be different if he owned his cheating in the first place rather than covering it up until he had no choice.

So how long before he's in a Marlin's uniform? When rosters expand or will we have to wait until 2017?

Or Tampa as a DH lets face it Tampa could do with something to get a crowd in. Marlins are still in a healthy spot for a wildcard so do the really need A Rod as a player replacing Martín Prado ?

I suppose the Marlins could used A rod as a DH in inter league games but I think they only have one series left at Cleveland

My guess A Rod will play elsewhere in 2017.

I imagine someone will pick him up, if only to sell a few tickets and see if he can catch the Babe (he won't imo).

I bet they'll be glad to see the back of him too. Won't have to worry about anyone getting Harper in a choke hold any more anyway.

I know he hasn't pitched much since he lost the closer role but before that he'd been pretty poor.

Officially released now. I wonder will any on the bubble contender take a chance on him? Or Carlos Gomez who's another player who was decent enough not too long ago but whose performance has dropped significantly and was DFA'd this week

Ohhhhhh the future wears pin stripes and plays in the Bronx

Imagine if Cargo had passed that physical last year; Cespedes somewhere else and no WS at all with this guy in the fold. Plus Wilmer Flores is useful and Zach Wheeler (another part of that trade) might still make it back this year.

Praying for the wild card this time around, just like all those years in the early 2000's... Mets should take a flyer on Papelbon, Familia blew another save last night.

I doubt we'll be seeing Wheeler this year. He's off to see James Andrews this week after experiencing 'elbow discomfort'. Going to see James Andrews never ends well.

Giancarlo Stanton's going on the DL. Get A-Rod in...!!!!!

The joys of being a Mets fan. Steven Matz has a no hitter going after 7 but it's only 2-0 so deep down we know there's just as much chance of the Mets losing this game as there is him completing the no no.

The Wrigley Field DJ is probably looking for a new job during the ninth inning of Sunday's 6-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs played a song called "Smack My Bitch Up" as Aroldis Chapman walked off the mound.

I must say, the older I get the more I like these really late west coast starts. My alarm is set for 6am but I always wake between 5-5:30 so normally I'd just lie awake and stare at the ceiling but this week I've been watching the last few innings of Mets games out west. Probably not sustainable for the long term but good for a week or so I hope.

Now if they'd only win... Well, o.k. they won yesterday, but the first game against Arizona was horrible!

Bluejays go a game and 5 innings without scoring against the Yankees, rain delay for half an hour, come back and score 12 unanswered runs and win again today 7-4. Big series win that looked like it could be an big series defeat.

Yankees putting abit of a run together as of late. Not completely out of it yet.

Needless to say when I woke up this morning and it was 9-2 or whatever, I went back to trying to sleep. Niese is a disaster.

I'd actually say they are. 7.5 back in the division, and 5.5 in the WC with 4 teams to pass. 42 games left? Nope, can't see it with how things are stacked up. It's not mathematically impossible but they don't have the pitching or the hitting. I'd bet they lose more series than they win from now to the end of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭krustydoyle

The Yankees aren't getting anywhere near a wildcard.. It's all about blooding the prospects.. Sanchez is gonna catch for the rest of the season with McCann in as DH.. But the pitching is shocking bad and the bullpen is even worse. Some interesting moves coming this off season

Not a great start to this 7 game stretch against SF and the red hot Cardinals. Really need to go 5-2 or 4-3 at the worst to get back into the race but that's not going to happen now. It started so well too, getting 4 runs against Bumgarner but then as usual it all went pear shaped.

Might be time to call it quits on the season and sit down Noah and Matz and get them the surgeries they need and have them right for 2017. Under .500 now too.

The Brewers start a lefty tonite for the first time in 474 games!! One of those 'wtf' head scratching stats. It's beyond bizarre.

And the Jays lose their first ever game in franchise history to a walk-off inside the park homer. Tonight was also their 41st game this season, and 11th in 19, where the hitters have struck out in double figures. Ugly.

Did anyone else hear about some of the new rule changes the Commissioner is ruminating over? A pitching clock? Good idea. Stopping the shift? How would you enforce that? Mark out different areas of the infield for each position? Can't be done imho. Limiting the number of relievers in a 9 inning game? Hmmm. I don't know. Given the bullpen specialists today that would take years to implement. How about enforcing a rule whereby hitters can't leave the batters box between pitches?

Yeah I heard that alright. The game's not broken, I wouldn't be fiddling with it. Especially the 'ban the shift' one. You're a major league hitter, hit the ball to where the fielders aren't standing!

I also don't like the messing with relievers either. I'm still a relative newcomer to baseball but love the traditional 'old ways' of baseball' so leave it alone please.

I think that batters in the batter's box rule is already there. It was brought in last year with fine's of a few hundred bucks (pocket change) to be levied. I never heard of anyone getting fined though.

I do hate the opening and re-fixing of batting gloves between pitches though. That one drives me bonkers. I'd ban that..!!

I don't like Michael Kay and as his show is more Yankees focused than Mets, I don't listen to it too much.

But from listening to Francesa and other phone in shows, I'm well aware of the nut jobs in NY that ring into these kind of shows. Every city probably has their share of loons though.

Nats put Strasburg on the 15 day DL with elbow soarness

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,687 ✭✭✭✭jack presley

Hearing the words elbow and soreness in the same sentence as pitcher is never good.

Especially if you're paying him for the next 14 years.

He's had a great year. Didn't realise he was 0-3 with a 14.66 ERA in his past 3 starts though. With the Nats so far ahead in the division, they've dropped off my radar.

The 1-2-3 of Scherzer, a healthy Strasburg and Roark would be pretty hard to beat in a 5 or 7 game series and I'd fancy their chances against anyone including the Cubs with that rotation.

Edit - Apparently it is just a precautionary move by the Nats. Wise considering they've the division more or less wrapped up and they need him for October and the next 7 years.

Its a wise move, but in reality its a rest. He's getting time to recharge the batteries before the playoffs. No point in having him tired come the end of September.

Billy Hamilton of the Reds ran down a ball hit into center field the other night and I'm still shaking my head in disbelief! That man can flat out run. Wow!

I saw that. Pretty amazing alright. He's great to watch on the bases too. His hitting has improved a lot this year too. He's up over .260 now so if he can keep that rate up, he'll be a great asset to the Reds.

I liked this one better (though that was an incredible catch)

Both great catches but I think Hamilton's is better by far. Did you see the ground he made up? Speaking of Cespedes though...

I don't believe any of this stuff. Some owner comes along and offers eleventy-million-billion dollars to play for them, they will. After the 2000WS, Mike Stanton was all over how he wouldn't leave the Mets. Then the Rockies badly overpaid him, he tanked, and set their franchise back years.

Now, if the Wilponzis actually extend Cespedes before the end of the season, then I'll believe him :)
