External USB only works through Hub - Windows 10

I have a USB3 compatible HDD and when I plug it into one of the 3 ports on my laptop (all USB3), the device doesn't show up. But when I put it into a USB2 hub it works fine. Is there any way I can get it to work through the normal ports?

No, it's powered via the USB port to which it connects.
