Repair or replace vacuum cleaner?

I live in a rented house that has a Nilfisk A100. Yesterday while I was hoovering, sparks came out of the hole where the lead enters the vacuum cleaner, with a small amount of smoke and a smell of burning. It tripped the switch after which the hoover has failed to switch on.

The nearest repair centre is 50 minutes away. I don't have a car. They won't say if they think the hoover can be repaired or how much it might cost to replace it until they see the hoover.

So my question is do you think it's worth the hassle of walking there for an hour or is it likely that the hoover can't be repaired or will cost almost as much to repair as to replace? A similar hoover looks like it would cost about €140.

Sounds like the flex has failed, if that's all that's wrong with it, then any competent person (someone who understands electrical wiring) could rewire the lead.

rather than the lead itself, it may be the electrical connection that allows the cable to roll up so maybe a bit more complex/costly.

    Thanks for your input, everyone!

A friend who has some experience with electronics came to have a look at it. It was a huge struggle to even take the hoover apart. To be honest, it looked like it wasn't made to be dismantled. There were lots of screws and awkward casings.

After about an hour, he got to where the flex begins. The problem was as described. The issue had been caused by tugging the lead when hoovering.

Theoretically, it would have been possible to fix at this point. But the top of the flex was encased in some kind of grip that needed a specialist tool to get open and insert back into the machine.

He figured it would cost more to get an expert to repair than to replace the hoover. And I honestly couldn't see how anyone except the most experienced could get it back in one functioning piece.
