Is the TT just gonna be on that long, boring road that connects the motorway to Athy?

not even a turn or a bend on it.

They're more likely to stay on the R448 at 28.8km instead of taking that left. (Purely based on previous IVCA races!!)

According to the circuit details on the CI site, they do take that left. :o

More of a hill on that road, goes up by the round tower, not a great surface last time I was on it which is probably why the Vets don't use it....

Yes. It is a very difficult 25 Miler, out-and-back with hardly a flat stretch on it; used as a championship route a few moons ago I believe.

Sam Bennett has been getting over hills pretty well recently......is this a route for him? (assuming it would fit with his schedule)

    Yes definitely.
I'm pretty certain a world tour rider is going to win given the wearing down process involved. Lots of rolls and heavy roads. If Roche doesn't drop Bennett before the final hill well Sam can definitely do it

Circuit will wear down any bunch, climbs are narrow and long enough to cause problems, the main road is wide but rolling, descent from Narraghmore, Old Kilcullen are fast as is the descent from Bewel Hill and both are narrow, better course than the Lakes imo, more sporting and just as selective. Masters course is about as challenging as last years but with a good drag nearer the finish.

Very good, hopefully Roche still fancies it. It would be nice to see the champions jersey back at WT level.

He'd have to win it first ;)

Shame with all the route changes we've ended up with a fairly tepid circuit, the one round Blessington lake would have been savage.

    Why did Blessington fall through?

According to the Wicklow Times there was a tractor rally.

    Edit, I was incorrect.

    Tepid???
    Glad you had a rethink.
6 times up that narrow road to Brewel is far from Tepid. I expect the field to be in pieces after the first lap. And maybe 30-40 finishers

No I still think it's tepid, the Blessington route way much harder imo.

Anyone know for sure where the finish will be?

Im not sure but I believe the Saturday finish is outside the town somewhere and the Sunday is hopefully up the main street hill; I'm sure those who are working on it are putting the final touches to it at the moment.

Final decision on finish area is awaiting consultation with local Gardai and County Council on safe location. Should know Friday whether we can use the town or if it'll be on the circuit.

I was around the Elite circuit tonight and it's anything but tepid. It's a tougher circuit than last year and I don't think many complained about that being Tepid. There are plenty of drags and Brewel hill to break the bunch up and very little "flat" (as it's either up or down). I can't imagine the finish being on the Naas side of the town (where the Rás stage finished a few years ago) as it would require a massive operation to keep the run in safe for the 5 events, there is however a wide section of road on the Athy side about a kilo from the circuit that would have enough space around it for the race infrastructure. Masters circuit is ideal and harder in reality than it looks on strava/paper, same for the Elite circuit. Best of luck to the organisers.

Will the circuit have complete road closure or rolling closures?

  • Registered Users Posts: 87 ✭✭Homer1798

A rolling road closure is normal for the Nationals.

They had complete or partial road closures in Multyfarnham 2 years ago. The partial closures were on the N4 where they sectioned off enough of the road for the bike race, but traffic could still get by in both directions. The rest of the route was completely closed off.

Theres good, wide roads on this circuit. I wouldn't be surprised if they did likewise.

Rode the TT course as part of our club league on Thursday evening, nothing simple about it, hardest part is the last 10km, seems to me it'll be one where the real TT specialists will shine.

Rode the senior RR route this morning, my personal opinion is that it'll work well and whoever wins will be a worthy champion, it'll be hectic enough on the first few laps I reckon, position going into the Bewel hill section will be important, the road is narrow for a big group, if you're not right upfront it'll be hard to react to any moves.

I hope Orwell have a good supply of brushes though, the very heavy rain on Tuesday carried a lot of stone and gravel on to the Bewel hill section, one rider solo can pick his way down but in a group it'll be lethal as it stands
