Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I will leave you with this Christy tune from back in the day when a music video in Ireland had the budget of a pack of smokes...

I think th opposite would be true. Far more local knowledge, supervision and control over how the money is spent. You would need far stronger transparency guidelines, then it would work.

    Hello Cloud Cuckoo Land.

    This is Ireland calling.

Maybe we have your votes please?

One of the biggest problems is the lack of access to locally raised taxes. Tax goes to the government, a small bit stays with the Co Council. The money is handed out ot them by the government after the Co Co go to them with a begging bowl.

Plenty of money that could be spent locally is held by various ministers and handed out in their own constituencies.

What we need is that a parish/community council can raise money and spend it on their own locality to provide services like on the continent, but that isn't going to happen here as it moves power out of the hands of TD's and Councillors.

quite the opposite, it gives power to councillors. But Irish councillors don't want power, because then they might get blamed for something

Before i go, this is the name of the horse i forgot, is 33/1 Sir Des Champs, i don't know how it will go?

What time is it on, usually before 4 or after?
A hairline wrist fracture has ruled Ruby Walsh out of tomorrow's Grand National. He had been set to ride 33/1 Sir Des Champs.

5.15pm Patty, it's gone later now for Television reasons.

I hope one of the female riders wins, as an homage to Velvet Brown

I know countless country folk who yearn to return home to work outside of Dublin. Everything is here though in terms of work.

Alot of US direct investment (especially in Banking/Financial Services) want a presence in the Capital.

The pharmaceutical industry and some software companies are more averse to doing business outside of Dublin. Obviously poor broadband in some large towns even hinders companies from taking this step.

Decentralisation was tried but obviously didn't work but it was handled incorrectly. Theres this assumption that most people simply wouldn't want to up sticks from Dublin if the opportunity arose. Theres a large number of people (both public and private sector) who would jump at the chance to move into "rural ireland" with the promise of employment and a lower cost of living (which would probably lead to a better quality of living) than you would get in Dublin.

I'm amazed there hasn't been some thinking outside the box at national level by our politicians in order to redistribute the population and offer better tax breaks for even more multinationals to set up shop outside of Dublin. With all the talk of homelessness and overcrowding in Dublin/housing crisis etc.. a successful initiative would see a small scale exodus of people relying on living in our capital.

You only need to take the IFSC for example. 99% of employment down there usually involves sitting at your phone or PC for a 40 hour week. With the occasional meeting with the relevant head honcho, you need to ask do people really need to trek all the way into our capital clogging up the roads and housing only to do something that can be done at a computer and phone outside of Dublin?

All employees need are a phone and PC/laptop, build feckin call centres outside major towns with broadband and capability of plugging in and you would soon find people would not live in our city if they simply didn't need to. Obviously it would take some persuading of companies to have people working from home but it may lead to people being happier and more productive when they are not up at 6am to make it to their bus and then dart in order to be at work for 9am.

Release some of the pressure from Dublin aswell

Wasn't the FA Cup moved to that time as well?

Let's hope so, as it's Nina Carberry that's riding Des Champs.

No mention of the mountain biking at ballyhoura? Same place, no? Has the potential to attract loads of well healed European tourists who will travel in any weather.

And tv reality 'celebs' and rappers

We don't expect it. TBH I think this whole broadband BS is a red herring.

I can't comment as Ive never experienced broadband in rural Ireland. But I always think the complaints about it being so slow is because Pornhub keeps buffering on them :pac:

Seriously though BB is important, but how important is it? Are businesses in rural Ireland trying to attach terrabytes of files to emails or something? Surely once it can send emails and load websites its fast enough to do business?

The top two weighted horses - Many Clouds and Silviniaco Conti - are by far the best in the race. Many Clouds won last year and Conti steps up in trip.

The JP McManus pair of Gallant Oscar and Shutthefrontdoor have been aimed for this all year. Those in the know claim that the owner and trainers involved are known for 'protecting' their horses in prep races, ie, not letting the horses run to their true form to protect their handicap mark.

Saint Are has form at the track and in this race and runs off a light weight.

Apologies if you followed any of these horses today. The heavy ground put pay to most of them.

Perhaps they should ban high speed internet down the country as it will only end up closing the local video rental shops costing jobs :pac:

Oh well :( but I suppose €30 a year on bets isn't too bad.

Delighted for Mouse and the jockey. Fantastic day for them
