    Hi all,

Just wondering what the current job situation is like in Perth, I am heading out in September and would be interested to get into an environmental related role.

I have plenty of friends out doing labouring and construction related jobs but I would be more interested to further my career in doing something related to my Environmental degree.

Have a look on www.seek.com.au or get in touch with some of the recruitment agencies to get a feel for how the jobs market in your field is at the minute. Perth is taking a bit of a hit at the minute because of a slowdown in mining but not all areas are being affected.

What visa are you coming on Shane? Working holiday or PR?
That will have a bearing on opportunities.
Is the degree environmental engineering for construction or an earth sciences type degree?
I left last July to return home for a while but many of the guys I'm still in touch with that are still there are struggling to find work, that includes a few environmental specialists.
As per previous post check seek but be prepared to abandon search after a month or two and pick up something else if no joy.
    Good luck.

I heard on the radio yesterday (in queensland) that 1 in 4 people in WA are employed in the mining industry, directly and indirectly. The talk was about having the foresight to start organising retraining for these people now as lot of them went into high paying mining jobs straight after school and now that a crash is hitting.....well we are all well aware of what happens then.

Not saying the OP wont get work, but they just need to be aware of what is happening over there as it may be tough.

thanks for the advice men it has really made me think twice about going now as I don't want to go out there and get caught out when it comes to work! It's great to actually hear from people on the ground giving first hand knowledge compared to recruiting websites etc!

You shouldn't let it put you off totally, you might not get a job straight away in your particular field espically if you are on a working holiday but you could still get a job or many jobs and have a great time.

Depends what you want to get from the trip...

If you are a recent graduate looking for first role than you'll struggle with local competition but if you have experience you might be fine. Also the Aussies like a good hard worker and may even jump in to help with your visa if they want to keep you.

This. I wasnt trying to put anyone off with my previous post about the job situation in WA, of course there are jobs but just be aware theres no such thing as straight off the boat and straight into a job like loads of guys try to make out. This post is very true about the good workers, all irish people i know here who are good hard workers have all done very well in their jobs. My work has jumped through hoops for visas for me. I was hired as a graduate 4 years ago and 8 aussies have come in and failed at the same graduate role in the time ive been here.
