    Hi!
I'm an 18 y/o budding illustrator, currently in 1st year NCAD going into graphic design next year, based in Dublin, I love the idea of self-publishing a book or looking to illustrate a children's book with/for someone.

I'm willing to go down the road of self-publishing if pitching the book to publishers fails because I think it would be a rewarding experience anyway!

If you are looking at this and thinking: that sounds cool but I'm broke - we can start up a kickstarter, design a basic cover idea and a page or to to show people our plans and start from there. We'd definitely need to do this if we're doing the self-publish route!

I have cool ideas - maybe not even children's literature but even satirical illustrations accompanying witty writing. I'm up for basic digital illustrations or marker/colouring pencil.

If you are interested leave me a reply or PT and I'll send u on my stuff.

Don't want to be a wet blanket here, but statistics show that self-published children's books rarely do well. It boils down to something very simple. Children don't have credit cards, and you need one to buy a book online.

The biggest expense in publishing is not writing, editing or printing, it's distribution. Actually getting the book onto the shelves in bookshops, and even more getting them onto display tables and into 3 for 2 offers or special promotions.

If you self-publish, and you score a killer deal on the editing and printing, you are very unlikely to be able to get the book into Easons or waterstones or Tesco. You might be able to talk a couple of local bookshops to carry a dozen on a sale or return basis, but you won't make much money like that.

Most self-pubs are sold online, usually through Amazon, iTunes, B&N etc. Which is fine if you write erotica or thriller or romance. People who read those will go looking for them, and when they find one they like, they'll click "buy" and give their credit card details.

Children don't go looking for books online, and even if one spots one they like, they don't have a credit card, so they have to talk an adult into buying it for them.

Your best bet is to look for a traditional publisher. O'Brien Press accept unagented submissions, but you need to have your book finished and polished. In general, they only want the book, they will supply the artist to illustrate it.
