Pretty brutal attendance at the KK Dublin match last night, I read there was only 10,419 people at it. So if the theory is that the attendance of the WD Clare was so low due to people's disdain for sweeper systems etc, what was the reason for such poor attendance on a nice evening for the KK Dublin game?

That's about average I'd say for Leinster semi-finals involving KK (when they have to travel). Obviously Dublin hurling wouldn't have a major following in general I think.

Wasn't a bad attendance for a Saturday night game surely?

sorry I went myself, all the same :)

This has probably already been asked but why was the hurling played in Laois?

Dont know to be honest. Don't think there's home and away arrangements in Leinster, or at least not as much as in Munster, so it's whatever the Leinster Council decides. And they seem a strange bunch as they fixed the Dublin/Laois football match for Kilkenny and the Dublin/Kilkenny hurling match for Laois. Go figure!

Kilkenny and Wexford and Kilkenny and Offaly have home and away arrangements but there is no such arrangement between Kilkenny and Dublin

Simple.dublin don't support the hurling team in decent numbers.many more kk fans than dubs Saturday night.

To summarise and looking back over the last few years attendances at the Munster and Leinster Championships:

10,000 is probably average for a Leinster semi-final involving Kilkenny v Dublin on a Saturday night in Portlaoise.

19,000 for a Munster semi-final on a Sunday afternoon of a Bank Holiday weekend is not great and further emphasises the point that people will not be bothered going to the hassle and expense of travelling to matches if there not entertained.

Disagree with you bonnie dog. Dublin hurling support is like cork football support.not having ago at the dublin supporters that do go.my own club here in Dublin have the captain of the hurlers but very few go in relation to the footballers.coaches last week for nowlan park none for Saturday night.

Saying attendance is low due to not being entertained is too simplistic. The Waterford/Clare game was the third game between these sides in a row. That's expensive especially if you have a young family. The Gaa should have reduced the ticket prices for the league final replay. I think if they did, that would have helped attendance for the championship match as people were a little pissed that there was no reduction for the replay.
Also as the league final replay was an entertaining game itself then the entertainment value shouldn't have affected attendance for the next game especially among Clare and Waterford supporters. Plus i've never gone to a Waterford match because i wanted to be entertained, i went because i wanted to see Waterford win first and foremost which i would imagine that's why the majority of Clare and Waterford supporters went to these games to see their team win.

A lot of neutral hurling fans also go to games where their county is not playing.but the sweeper system is putting a lot of them off going.yes if your from waterford you might not care but neutrals who love the game hate watching that style of hurling and certainly won't pay to watch it.

The sweeper system has very little to do with making a good game into a bad game. Its the crowding of the middle third which in turn leads to handling errors and higher number of wides. Most teams now pull one of their corner forwards out to midfield and half forward lines often play across midfield.

Didn't know what Ger Canning on TV was talking about saying it'll probably be a yellow card. It was red all day long, knew as soon as I seen it that he was off. Stupid and right in front of the ref.

Crazy stuff. Put his team from a position of serious dominance into a big hole.

looks like the ref feels bad so he's going to go easy on the whistle for tipp now

    Class score.

    Breen is incredible. 2-1 already.

Limerick back line torn asunder again. Where is the extra man?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭warfie35

    Limerick full back is shocking

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,101 ✭✭✭Rightwing

I get the feeling LK need goals to win this one. Dominant everywhere apart from the full back line, but no real threat in front of goal.

Ref has been siding with Tip since he sent their player off.

Can't see Tipp holding on in this unless they get a few more goals, expect Limerick to pull away at the end

    Absolutely brainless from O Dwyer

Nothing wrong with the refs performance so far.

Tipp will have a huge breeze in the second half judging by the flags on the field.

Bubbles deserved to be sent off. His temper is something that is worrying from a Tipp fans point of view. Can't afford to have one of our best players sent off 10mins into the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,155 ✭✭✭blackcard

Has only one forward scored for Tipp?

I still reckon Tipp will win. I don't think Limerick can score enough, while stopping Tipp from scoring.

Can you point out where? The only real contentious decision was when noel Mcgrath was obviously fouled and he gave a free to limerick and perhaps the hurley butt strike on barret he missed.

Can't think of anytime in championship but has been known to be hot headed in club games and the league last year or the year before had some fortunate calls

2-16 to 2-10 now. Cooney straight red for galway

Edit - Offaly had a man sent off early enough in first half, that combined with z strong wind helped Galway

Jaysus Galway have fairly turned the screw. From 1-07 to 1-06 down, to 2-14 to 1-08 up.

    You're a bit behind.

Its 2:17 to 2:9 or so... Galway had a man sent off a few mins ago and Offaly had one before HT.

credible performance by offaly , losing by 8 points in the end to galway the sending off didnt help but hopfully they are starting to put things together again ,

Couple of decisions went Tips way at the end of the 1st half there.

Can you point them out? I have given you one decision that was a two point wp swing to limerick and a potential limerick sending off.

So you can't point them out?

Ref has been fair, no favouring of anyone.

Ref is grand. It's just the two teams and the match itself that are crap

Think McGrath has been fair today tbh, could argue decisions on either side but see no favouritism

He did for a few decisions in the end of the 1st half. A ref will often subconsciously do that when he's made a big decision against a team.

He didn't. He was fair bar the McGrath free. Stop looking for something that isn't there.

Again, care to point them out? Any frees they got were genuine frees.

He can't. It's nonsense to sugget that the referee hasn't been fair today.

Limerick showing how not to utilise the spare man and sweeper.

Why would you place the sweeper behind the FB line, he's just an advanced positioned keeper.

Sweeper should be between the two lines and when you've a spare man you should place him around the middle... More so when you're losing like this.... Very poor.

There were a couple of important decisions that went Tips way towards the end of the 1st half, those decisions are not determining the outcome of the game, but that's just a fact. Fierce touchy lot on here.
