I haven't a hope of running sub 7, a less coffee fuelled prediction of 7.42 is still a tough target.

After a poor showing last year, I'm hoping for a little redemption on Saturday. The skulling of cans remains my primary weakness and with no specific practice at this, it is not likely to be any better. At least 2 years of 1500m training should help me eke out a few seconds in the actual running part, although we all know this is secondary to the actual drinking :D

Getting close! Time to start thinking about how to get there :D

Don't suppose anyone is bringing a designated driver from anywhere close to Chapelizod?

145 bus or Green Line LUAS will get you there.

On my way to pick up about 18 James Boags bottles. Base building was well and truly done Sunday night, now the specific sessions start tonight.

    How's everyone's training going?

I'm adopting a turn-up-on-the-night, 'run the flag up the flagpole and see who salutes' approach.

First session done. 4xJames Boags off 1 min recoveries. 31-38-52-125

Confidence rattled. A lot of lactic build up in that last rep. Usually I start off with just 3 reps. Work to be done but happy I gritted it out. The basin wasn't needed too, so overall a solid shakeout.

I'm a little disappointed with the lack of trash talk and call outs this year...
Are ye all going soft :D

Seems like none of you lot are training. Do you want to be beaten over a mile by a sprinter?

I'm just happy you'll be getting some serious training in. Running a whole four laps. That's like an entire season's worth in the one night!

Your 400m rep times are almost as fast as my final beer split this evening. ;)

Do you really want to be known as the only person on boards that reads my log?

Were you taking fluids on board during yesterday's Mile TT? You should be favourite for Christ sake.

Could someone take me off the table? (Either that or pick me up from Lux in your private jet midday Saturday) Thanks.

Almost identical prep for me this year as last year. Just coming back from a long lay-off so not expecting much.

I don't think I'm going to manage this. A lot going on this weekend, I won't rule it out completely but more than likely I won't make it.

    If I'd followed the Mile Time Trial with 4 X 355ml rather than 4 X 400m, I might give myself a chance :D

Did the same session as yesterday and what a difference a day makes! Yesterday I ate 2 Donegal Catch fish fillets about 20-30 mins beforehand, this evening I went into the session completely starved.

4xJames Boags off 1 min recoveries. I felt great from the very start, and knew that today was going to be the confidence booster I needed. The beer was out of the fridge almost an hour by the time I did the session. It was still a bit cold, but I didn't want to hang on any longer as the earlier I get this done the quicker I can sober up.

    Times were: 38 - 44 - 40 - 54

My cumulative times for the first 3 reps were pretty much the same as yesterday, but I felt strong this time and there was no lactic blowup in the last rep. I felt smooth and relaxed, and it's amazing how easy it felt. I slowed it down a bit for the first couple of reps which allowed me to kick on in the 3rd rep and then hold my form well on the final 375ml.

Great news is that my James Boags are twisting off perfectly this time. I must have got a bad batch 2 years ago. I'll still bring a bottle opener just in case, but this can save me plenty of time.

There was a small bit of foam build up on reps 3 and 4, which was strange as there was none on reps 1 and 2, but because I'm drinking 375ml bottles, which are 20ml more than the minimum requirement that doesn't bother me at all.

Tomorrow I'll do my one and only drink+run session, and then on Friday I have some easy miles on a work night out.

Am feeling more confident of a good performance on Saturday. Last year was shameful and I fully expect to redeem myself this time round.

Final specific session this evening at half time during the football. Myself and my housemate used our front garden which has a hedge which somewhat hid our drinking, from the many kids out kicking football on the road, and we ran reps of 380m out and back. I went for 4 runs 3 beer. Starting with the run, so that all my beers would be run after a run.

    Times for the runs were: 1:39 - 1:43 - 1:47 - 1:35

    Times for the beers were: 32 - 36 - 47

My third beer I struggled to twist off the cap and lost about 5 seconds. I went handy enough on the runs.

Total time was 8:44 which is very satisfactory for a training effort.

    Roll on Saturday!

I say, that's quite a front garden, Lord Chivito, old fruit.

I'm hoping to make it tomorrow after missing this event the last few years for various reasons. I've been travelling the last year, no running done but plenty of slow drinking, if that's any advantage! I downed 2 bottles of moosehead last night during the soccer, both in about 18 seconds. I did take a good 5 mins break between reps though. No running between beers but I did go to bed feeling a bit tipsy!! Aim for my first beer mile is to not get sick....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,062 ✭✭✭davedanon

A light warm-up tonight with a couple of Mooseheads. Got to say I think it's ideal for beer-miling. Unremarkable taste, goes down easily enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,118 ✭✭✭Peterx

    Physical Training;
Wednesday hillrun - 11km 1 mid strength Guinness in the pub
Thursday - one beer no running
    Friday lunchtime - Park jog
Just now - two beers no running

The local Supervalu stocked only Seirra Nevada Pale Ale (bottle) and Brooklyn Lager (can) in the prescribed format so I took home one of each.
Just drank them there now watching Ápres Match. Hard to know which is less gassy. I had the can first and it went down very easy in about 10 seconds, I did 2 jogging laps of the coffee table and got some encouraging burps out, downed the bottle and got some more burps out. The bottle was about 15 seconds but it had the disadvantage of going second. The whole thing was about a minute.

I know I don't drink enough for sure as I'm slightly tipsy here.

Looking forward to tomorrow now, I think the ability to get the gas out is the key to not getting a penalty lap.

    Mental training;
    Visualisation of burping :)
