Am I the only one who likes it? But you do need adblock because the new layout is pretty much unstable without adblock because of the flashy ads

It was said before that if you admit to using an adblocker on the site you'll be banned because you're taking the food from the childers mouths.

I reckon after using it for a few hours, you'll get used to it and forget the old one.

People will migrate to Reddit and just get used to that layout instead. They if they switch back, those accounts are going to be closed and the users will be established Reddit users.

It's such a bad business decision I can't understand the push, unless they actually want the site to contract (and probably die). Such a shame.

Never. While there's good content there, it's generally a circle jerk of a popularity contest.

Dissenting voices get downvoted to oblivion while the backslappers give reach arounds. It's not a place for any sort of discussion.

    It's absolutely horrible!

Boards works because it has a Forum look and feel that draws a community that does not want to communicate over the horrific format that the Beta brings.

    Its God awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

I like Reddit but it's a terrible platform for discussion, pretty non-existent actually as the top post is the one that ends up dictating the rest of the thread and it's very easy to silence people with opposing views.

Why go ahead with something so despised, with something your users don't want? I personally hate it.

Reddit is starting to look better and better. It would be wise to keep this old version as an option for the sake of keeping users.

Getting RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite) makes a huge difference too.

Easy extension for any browser that adds a lot to the experience.

I find myself over there a lot more these days, but I would still like the actual forum/boards feel that this site offers. The Beta is definitely a step away from that.

I don't really agree. Plus, when threads get populated here with posts, and go beyond page 2, most people just scroll through, stopping to read the posts with the most thanks.

Discussion happens at about a similar level, once you actually get used to the Reddit format, I found.

They are short burst discussions though, which is the issue, and it lacks the same community feel. Whereas here you have threads lasting for years, potentially.

    No "Most Thanks" tab :(

I don't think so. When I enter a forum, around 40% of the screen is taken up by a header. If I hover over a header link my whole screen is gone. When you do it accidentally it's even more annoying. On certain sections there's scroll bars inside scroll bars. When I scroll down the page the large header goes away but now I lose my search. There's a pile of major fcuk ups from the get go.

Then down to the content... big banner... then buttons, with no primary or secondary colour scheme for priority. Everything seems on top of itself. A third of the content area taken by space for a sticky banner, fantastic!

Thread summaries look awful, and I can't hover to see the first post any more. I can't go further, back to legacy view please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

The design and colour scheme is way too simple, scrolling down the Latest Posts isn't intuitive and just becomes a wall of text making it difficult to see what threads belong to what forums.

Look at the state of the Trending box

That surely is beta or testing, right? They're not going releasing this in any way, are they?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,570 ✭✭✭HensVassal

This new format is fucking dire. Whose idea was it to change from the original format? Where are all the normal features? Have to scroll back up to the top to go to the next page and when you do open a thread the car-crash of a view is just painful.

    Complete and utter trainwreck.

Add your reply here.Your 'trending box' link doesn't work in the Beta version - only the legacy

    Who tested this ****e?

It seems to be the thing to do these days - digitalspy introduced a hideous new look and traffic suffered, they did tweak it a bit to make it more useable but the old software was so much nicer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,080 ✭✭✭✭Maximus Alexander

Is this just change for the sake of change? From a user perspective there's no need for it, and indeed users seem to consider it universally awful. Strange decision.

Maybe they're trying to appeal to some hip new crowd and they don't care about us anymore.

I got a flash of it and thought my browser was crashing, it looked some cr@ppy web mail. Were the developers checked for colour blindness?

I would pay a €1 a month to keep the old layout. That's how much I dislike the new one. And I don't pay for nothing on the Internet.

If it aint broke just leave it. People who use the site like it for what it is. Why change it on them, why :(

It's been dropping since before the DDOS attack. This is not the time to be changing people's comfort perceptions. Maybe it's just the old fogies like me who are thrown by it? Still you're going to lose many of those IMHO.

+1 and I'd even pay for it.

IMH it's a way to make the desktop look more like the mobile site as more and more browse by mobile devices. It's a "thing" in the industry. Apple tried it with elements from their iOS moved to their desktop. Some were utterly 'kin stupid too. EG removing scroll bars from windows unless you were scrolling, like on a phone. That makes perfect sense on the limited screenspace of a phone, but is completely retarded on a desktop. Reversing the scroll direction was another genius move. And that's Apple FFS. They made their name with look and feel. At least with Apple they left the options to go back to the old behaviour and the majority of folks I know clicked those options.

I'd pay a fiver per month to keep it TBH.

This all reminds me of when a pub local to me that was always stuffed with people decided to "have a meeting" and brought in some expert or other and they totally revamped it. Nice jobs going in the revamping, rolled out a flashy opening night and then... tumbleweed. It's so empty these days I dunno how they keep the doors open.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I'm using the beta right now and there's so much wasted space I could vomit. Can we at least change how posts width appear? It doesn't seem to scale on window size beyond a certain point anyway. Instead I have about 1/3 of the page with posts, rest is blank useless space, and the posts are squeezed down multiple lines instead of one on the legacy.

    Boards pls, what the actual.

Harder to use, way more space for advertising, can read less posts on one page and see more sh1t that has no relevance or use to me.

If your objective was to make the site significantly less user friendly and significantly more annoying at the expense of ad revenue it has been a resounding success. If not, it's a sh1tshow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

Really does look like it's built to be formed around adverts since they take up most space and are the only colourful things that pop out.

Adding the fact that the Talk To is so prominent there gives you an idea where they want to go with this forum.

is it just me or is this new look actually unusable in chrome?

None of the "My Threads", "My Forums" links are working.. even the header menu where i can select topics is not working. I don't even have the "bring me to legacy" button or whatever its called.

I didn't switch it on and now can't switch it off. Am in Ireland on a common Irish network.

Currently have to use Firefox, which is nice :)

I accidentally had the beta site come up earlier on my phone. There's far too much padding and white space. On 40 posts per page, I'm scrolling enough already! It's less and less like a discussion forum Boards is becoming tbh. I don't know what this latest effort is about or who it's aimed at.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,116 ✭✭✭RDM_83 again

I don't get the need for it, the mobile site was pretty decent and if they added a few features like advanced search would have been completely usable.

Touch the Boards sign,it's on the bottom of the page titled "Legacy Site".

Doesn't work on mobile, probably tweaks needed.

I am sorry if this offends but the reason why these changes happen is because people are employed to "develop" the site. If they leave it the same then maybe you don't need developers.

If Boards do a "g mail" & make it compulsory then it will show their total disregard for the people that make this site so amazing.

According to their announcement the present site is being kept for a few months after the launch of the new site in a few weeks.Like it or go whistle after that.
Don't mind it that much, but as I say it's a disaster on mobile.

If it was just a new look, it would be fine. We'd adjust to the ugliness. It's not though - it's counter-intuitive, less functional, there's too much wasted space and it all just makes for a wholly irritating user experience. I hope they can somehow find a way of retaining existing functionality - the little things like being able to search for 'who quoted my posts', hover over a thread title and see what it's about, etc. Otherwise Boards will very quickly die.
