This has been annoying me for some time now.
Towards the end of the Six One news on RTE, Sharon Ni B******* or Dobbo introduce the "Sports Presenter".
They are standing behind and to the right of the newsdesk.
These guys are the most wooden personalities imaginable and deliver the sports news in the most boring fashion, with their laptops open whilst wearing their €2000 suits.
When finished, they turn over to the newsdesk again.
Then, Sharon or Dobbo will introduce a "human interest" story at the end of the news, before coming back with the Business news and finally recap the headlines again before saying "goodnight"(Dobbo) and "take care"(Sharon).
Throughout all of this, the boring sports guy is still waiting at the back, and only THEN, does he start logging off his laptop, and pretending to be busy, while Dobbo & Sharon talk to each other and completly ignore the boring sports guy.
    Ps
If you want credible sports guys, tune into Setanta 7-7.30 Mon- Fri.
The Newstalk Off the Ball crew are televised for the first half hour of their show.
No suits and robotic delivery there.

In my opinion Spotrs Presenters/Journalists are almost always poorer than their news equivalents. It's a dumping ground for fanboys and people who seem to have maybe done a journalism degree but wandered nto the sports gig because it was 'craic'. It's either that or some guy/gal who was a player and moved on to either pundiry or something else before becoming a sports 'journalist'.

You only have to look at sports reports to see the same old clichés trotted out over and over again. The same turns of phrase, the highly awkward puns and the awful overuse of the words 'Feast', 'Festival' etc. Even worse is a sports reporter on location doing a buildup report for the 'Big Game' doing an interview with usually two muppets who used to play the sport, if it's GAA they'll be from opposite counties (oh the tension) and there'll invariably be a big cheer at the end of the report from all and sundry. The only thing more boring than sport is the bloody sports reports.

How do you know their suits cost €2000?

RTE sports presenters and pundits are as a rule completely terrible. There's a few exceptions but not many.

Agree with the OP, the off the ball guys are by a mile the best in this country and way better than their predecessors.

On the RTE 6 one news it is just about delivering the sports news. On Newstalk the approach is that of a panel show where they cover the stories in more depth . One of them actually delivers the sports news (in a wooden manner with his head in his script) and then the others discuss it. They are obviously dressed down because they are primarily a radio show but I'm sure Willy or Woody or whatever his name is puts some thought into what he wears

The sport presenters on tv and radio are the guys who just didn't cut it as proper news, hardly one of them has anything that suggests weight or presence and their scripting of reports is appalling for the most part - a succession of worn cliches and statements of the bleeding obvious. No insight or angles. The only one as a presenter who looks and sounds like a grown up is Evanne Ni Chuilinn and yes she is rather striking visually but mainly she doesn't come across like a 14 year old on her first assignment.

There is a fella on the BBC who puns his way through almost every item he does. Utter wanker.
