    For example if you were out and your keys and wallet were stolen it would be prudent to immediately arrange a locksmith to change the locks and give you the new keys.
    Then it would be up to the tenant to then inform the landlord or letting agent of what happened and give them one of the new keys.

    Why would anyone stay in a place with such a crappy lock mechanism regardless of whether it's a rental,squat or owner-occupied ?

    Sorry,the main thing I meant to say is why would you then go onto the internet to blame someone else?
    I assume it must be political science you are studying :)

    Only joking,not a nice feeling to come home to that.
