The reason for the burglar being able to enter the property was that the front door lock is poor, with just a card being able to push the lock back and open the door. There is NO bolt lock on the door.
It sounds like you knew of the problem, but decided to ignore it until it affected you?

Are you allowed to do that on rented accommodations?

Under certain circumstances, if the lock is not secure, or if the lock must be changed due to loss of keys etc. especially if it is out of hours or at the weekend.
For example if you were out and your keys and wallet were stolen it would be prudent to immediately arrange a locksmith to change the locks and give you the new keys.
Then it would be up to the tenant to then inform the landlord or letting agent of what happened and give them one of the new keys.

Slight aside but so people actually get contents insurance in rented houses I've never heard of anyone having it nor had it myself? Must be very rare if something people get at all.

Why would anyone stay in a place with such a crappy lock mechanism regardless of whether it's a rental, squat or owner-occupied ?

Sorry, the main thing I meant to say is why would you then go onto the internet to blame someone else?
I assume it must be political science you are studying :)

Only joking, not a nice feeling to come home to that.
