Liverpool 2 - 0 Dave Whelan broke his leg in an F.A Cup final FC

Really should have been closer to double figures. Some great play amongst all the rustiness and lack of familiarity between the players. Great goal by Woodburn too.

Klopp says Matip has a "little problem with his ankle"

Didn;t see the game but will try and find a highlights package later - I'd like to claim I knew Woodburn would be a yoof star before anyone else here but Gafferino I think it is watches the kids as well - his vision and composure is "outstanding".

He was bossing U16s at 14 so he was moved up to the U18s at 15 and now he's effectively too good for the bulk of the U21s who were playing Germany yesterday as a 16 year old.

I don't like the way people are writing off Moreno. I want to get a new LB for competition, but I don't want to sell him. Think he could have a breakout season

I find it hard to believe the person who said the above about Moreno can write off Markovic as easily as you did below. I know it looks like I'm jumping on your post but I really am just interested why your so happy to give a 24 year old who cant defend such an easy time but cant give a younger player who can actually play a bit no time.

Markovic needs a shrink to look into his eyes and talk him out of his shell, even when he set up Ings with a lovely lofted pass he didn't make sure to get over for a high five moment.

Coutinho's little shimmy was lovely as was Woodburns finish, pinged the ball with lovely technique. Carry On Karuis but hopefully not the the start of a long running series!

How much wood would Woodburn burn if Woodburn could burn wood?

2 goals in 2 games for the 16 year old with no Wikipedia page I think he now needs a £200m buyout clause put into his contract right now.

Future 6 time Ballon d'Or winner right there.

Say 'we should sell Sturridge he only scores goals' and see what happens.

Moreno looks like he wants to be at the club. He actually looks interested when he's pressing. Markovic is the complete opposite for me. It's been longer since he's been playing for Liverpool but watch back and apart from a short spell in a game in the CL where he gets sent off, try and find the kid giving any sort of hustle. Today was more of it and I just don't buy into the notion that if we keep him and play him in the first team this season that he'll be any better than he was before.

I'm not saying give him no time. I do think there's talent there and he might go on and make it. I'm only saying that it's not going to be at Liverpool so I really really want to see him get a move to another club. I'll still root for him to succeed but my fear is if he stays, he won't play and his career will stall further.

If people believe in Markovic, you should be happy to see him go to a team and a league where he can excel. I just don't see who's place in the team he's going to take this season and honestly I don't think his head is in it. I want him to find his place. He's looked so average in possession with some lazy passing again today and I have no idea why people call for him to be in the squad.

Moreno has had plenty of gaffes but at least he's got the hustle. I'm not giving up on him yet, let's see if Klopp does, and let's see what Klopp decides to do with Markovic also - I might be very wrong on both but just my opinions.

TL;DR - I want Moreno and Markovic to succeed as I think both have the talent but think Marko can only do so at a different club, Moreno has the drive to do it with Liverpool

It's hard to judge that kind of thing from pre-season friendlies but you can be sure that if he's not putting a shift in in general then we won't have to wait long for Klopp to give him the boot. It's not something that we really have to worry about, whereas the glaring issues with Moreno have happened on match days and cost us not just points, but trophies.

And unlike Markovic, who's about 6th choice, Moreno is first and that doesn't look like it's going to change.

It worries me that Klopp is seemingly happy or at least fine with this, i mean who knows whats going on behind the scenes but we haven't exactly been linked with any "starting" LB.

Yea Moreno has pace and energy but at 24 still looks raw to me and we seem very unbalanced across the back 4 with him on one side and Clyne and the other.

Tony Barrett going with Liverpool putting in a bid for Wijnaldum at Newcastle.

Markovic is surely on his way - Liverpool are moving for Georginio Wijnaldum according to everyone this evening.

He would be a good signing. 11 League goals although all at home. Good all round player.

How many of the other 19 starting left fulls in the league would you take over him? I know it's not like he's top 5 in the league but I don't think he's close to being the bottom 5 either. I think I'd even take him ahead of Shaw or Monreal.

Newcastle looking for £27m, Liverpool looking at £20m. Expected to be done in time for him to go on the American leg of the tour.

Which current midfielder is getting sold is now the question that will be a lot of attaching midfielder if this Wijnaldum deal goes through

Markovic will be sold now I think. Wijnaldum can play CM,AM,RM & LM . Very versatile player.

I didn't see much of Newcastle play last year as their football put me to sleep most of the time.

Is he any good? Surely a defender is a more pressing appointment.

I don't see the need for that signing unless another attacking midfielder alongside markovic is being sold.

Centre back, left back or even centre midfield. There are doubts with Matip's fitness now & Allen's future.
We have Lallana, Firmino, Continho, Milner & Mane to play behind the forward or out wide or Ojo and Origi depending on game time and positioning. I'm not counting Markovic as he's nothing. Wijnaldum isn't a priority in any sense of the word.

There is more than Markovic from the midfield going to be sold.

I have a feeling Henderson will go with all the links about him during the Euro's.

I'd take Shaw and Monreal over him in an instant. I'd be fairly confident in naming 8/9 better LB in EPL but without going through each club etc I'd be happy to concede that IMO he is a mid-table player.

Can he push on? I really hope so but there's an unpredictability to him thats defensively dangerous, ultimately I have no trust in him. I'd take a solid defensive performer than a speed merchant with disappointing end product any day so maybe its a personal taste kind of thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,750 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

He can play centre mid and would be a similar type player to zielinski who we were linked with.

I think the player he is most likely replacing is Allen if anyone

Wijnaldum is a good player, and I like him, but not sure we need him?

Why arent we looking at a CB or LB? Or DM?

So much for our lauded transfer policy. He's Estonian, that's all I know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,983 ✭✭✭✭NukaCola

Newcastle scored 44 goals last season.
Wijnaldum scored 11 of them and assisted 5 from LM/CM/AM.

If we are looking to replace players in CM, and we should as quality is low, then a goal scoring Midfielder is just what we lack.

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,855 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

If we were to sign Wijnaldum, then even allowing for Markovic as not being in contention (or sold), it would leave us with these players as attackers.

    Wijnaldum
    Mane
    Sturridge
    Coutinho
    Firmino
    Lallana
    Origi
    Ings

That's a lot of players, and not even counting the younger lads who will be hoping for game time, especially Ojo. Surely some of them will have to go as I can't imagine many of them (Ings and Origi possibly excepted) will want to only have a handful of games, injury permitting. I know he can play CM, but surely his best position is further forward, which is why I have him listed there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,928 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Ragnar has a Wikipedia page at least so now I know everything about him unlike our new goal scoring Prodigy who doesn't have such a page.
