Hi lads, I've an old Ankermann desktop at home with the following spec:

    MOBO: Asus P5KPL-CM LGA775
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
    RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR2 800MHz
    GPU: Palit GeForce GT740 2GB DDR3
    HDD: WD 320GB 2.5" 5400rpm
    SSD: Kingston 120GB SSD
    DVD1: LG Blu-Ray Recorder
    DVD2: LG DVD-RW Recorder
    PSU: Ankermann 600W PSU

I was thinking about upgrading it on the old motherboard with this:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3GHz +€84.50
    RAM: Another stick of 4GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM +€42.00
GPU: Palit GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB +€112.00

    Total: €238.50

Or for the same money I can switch to socket 1150:

    MOBO: ASRock H81M-DG4 +37.53
    CPU: Intel Core i5 4460 4x 3.20GHz +162.93
    RAM: 8GB G.Skill F3-1600C11S-8GNT DDR3-1600 +27.44
    Total: €227.90

What do you reckon, which would be faster for video editing & games?

    i5 4460 + 8GB RAM + GT740
    Q9650 + 8GB RAM + GTX 750 Ti ?

And yes, I know LGA775 is outdated.

    OC'd the 6600 will match the Q9650.

If it were a DDR3 board it might just be worth the RAM and GPU, but with DDR2 its time to abandon ship.

If it's for gaming you're just better off upgrading platform - even after spending all that money, your Q9650 and 8GB of DDR2 will be slow as hell in most AAA games and would bottleneck the GTX750Ti badly.

GT740 is a pretty slow card as well, though you can use it with your new build for the moment until you can save for a better card. I'd still take the i5-4460 and a GT740 over a Q9650 and GTX750Ti any day though.

If budget is a concern you could just get a 2nd hand i5 2nd gen and mobo, shouldn't cost more than about €110 for both and they'll still very good for games....just avoid 1st gen i5, rest are solid.
