Hi there, posted this in student finances but I don't think much traffic goes through there...

I am currently finishing first year on BTEA. A friend who is also on the same payment told me today that he was talking to someone from Welfare and there are plans to introduce means testing to all part time work done during either the academic year or summer. I started part time work last October and was hoping to continue over the summer and then just give it up like a month before college started so I could requalify for the qualifying payment (Jobseekers allowance). But the prospect of this means I might have to just give up the job once exams are over...has anyone been talking to welfare about anything in relation to summer work or changes? I thought we were supposed to have received letters requesting our finishing dates but I (or my friend) have not received anything...

You could work part time and get JA over the summer if your means justify it. However, last year when I tried to return to BTEA the wanted my payment to be the average of my last 8 weeks JA payment. It seems the only way to avoid this is to be unemployed when returning to BTEA. I haven't heard anything about part time work while on BTEA being means tested.

Do you mean that you worked part time through summer and were still working part time when you reapplied for BTEA? I've read (on Boards mind you) that working part time over summer is grand as long as you leave the job and are claiming the full JA when reapplying for BTEA... thanks for the reply by the way

    No worries.
Yes, exactly. It was a job that I had had during the previous academic year and the DSP were aware of it. As it had no effect on my BTEA in the previous academic year, I was assured by the DSP that it would have no effect when I return to BTEA after the summer. In pratice though they then wanted to meanstest me when I returned. Much better if you were just getting full JA before you apply for BTEA in September.
