Sure I buy my own clothes, which other people make, instead of hand weaving them myself. I'm clearly a monster.

Bitterness? No, I just can't deal with laziness.

Valuing your free time isn't the same as laziness.

To clean a house properly (change bed sheets in several rooms, give the bathroom(s) a good clean, hoover all over, mop floors) takes HOURS.

I have better things to do with my weekend!

Washing dishes and tidying is done as I go.

Either way, personal comments about me and my relationship to my parents and future children are way over the top and totally unnecessary. Maybe if you spend less time cleaning and more time having fun you'd be less unkind.

OP, an extra euro an hour would probably mean a lot more to her than it does to you, if you wanted to look at it like that.

    I'm confused.

No, it's obvious. Girls who like tequila or falcons need cleaners.

I've a cleaner, I pay her €10/hr and she does 2 hrs per week. I work minimum 55 hrs/wk, often closer to 70. I have elderly parents with whom I need to spend time. I have an intense and pressured job and when I've time off I want to relax and enjoy it, not spend it cleaning my shower and washing floors.

I do clean as I go in terms of dishwasher loaded and emptied, laundry done, place tidy, ashes from the fire taken out the next evening, bin emptied etc. The cleaner does the hoovering, washes floors, cleans shower and toilets and does the dusting and polishing of furniture. She also changes the bed linen which is an absolute luxury.

It means my house is always clean and tidy, and I get to spend my precious free time doing pleasurable things. If others deem that selfish or lazy, well, *shrug*, I really don't care, tbh.

Maybe it is because my mother had me ironing my own clothes from the age of 12 along with doing other household chores but I just couldn't have somebody come into my house to clean. I would be embarrassed. I would feel they were like a slave. Its only my own personal opinion. I have friends who have cleaners come to their house but its not for me.

Me too. I was chief ironer in my house all through secondary school. I got through MANY shirts. I actually enjoy ironing, so the cleaner never does that. We also used to do the vacuuming, dusting, all that jazz when we were kids. But I don't have kids to set to work cleaning my house, so what choice do I have but to hire someone :-D

Just for those people who employ cleaners and also have children. Who cleans up after them on the days when the slave, sorry I mean cleaner, isn't around?
I clean for a living. One house has 5 children and mother works. OMG it's the tidiest house I have ever seen with 5 kids! I usually get there at 9am and 2 adults and 5 kids have gotten ready for their day and not a thing out of place. I'm impressed..
I do the deeper cleaning eg bathrooms, floors, windows, change beds etc. for 3 hours 30 euro.
This allows the family to partake in all the kids sport and social events at weekends and sit down together in the evenings.
By no means is anyone in this family lazy..far from it!
Small price to pay to enjoy your kids who grow up way too fast..

I was ironing, cooking and washing my own clothes at 10. I left home at 18 completely independent and it was extremely beneficial.

However, never in a million years would I consider it slavery to EMPLOY an individual with a very fair wage.

It is an insult to those in the past (and present) who know what real slavery is.

A job is a job. Some people genuinely love cleaning. My aunt is one of them!

Ah yeah. I kind of figured what you meant as I was posting. But, people who do things for a living are good at them.

I have a lady who comes in once a month and deep cleans the likes of skirting boards, window lats, bathroom tiles, etc., way faster, better, and more efficiently than I can.

To me, it's worth the money to get these things done properly, especially when I'm working crazy hours - it allows me a bit of free time (or not doing them at all!).

Would having someone clean your house enhance your free time though?
I'm the same. I would love someone else to do a lot of different things but I can't justify it.
A lot of people can though, at a small expense..

Sounds amazing. Those 3 things are on the 'neglected' list in my house. Maybe I'll treat myself and get a deep clean done at some stage.

It wouldn't enhance my free time, as I have enough of it. But it would definitely enhance the house! I don't have the energy to be scrubbing bathroom tiles, despite the fact I would like them clean. Currently they're addressed on an ad hoc crisis basis.

How filthy are you if you only clean as you go? Do you never put 2 or 3 hours aside to bleach and disinfect or clean the grout between tiles or steam clean? You must be confusing having a personal slave walk around picking up crisp packets with someone who comes in and actually cleans a house

No I'm just able to clean a house over a set number of days fully, its not that hard, take two rooms a day and don't fanny about, actually clean them, there is a big difference between cleaning and tidying up,I'm not a clot so don't need to tidy up,I keep things clear of clutter, it helps.

By the by, the common theme here is people having kids but not having 2 or 3 hours to spare with them a week. if people are working such long hours and have such long commutes would they not think about the consequences this is having on their kids, not being around to raise them and shoe horning them in? Should it not be kids, family then work instead of work then kids then family? Seems like a fundamental social breakdown?

With all respect, you enjoy and are adept at cleaning and deep cleaning your home. Not all of us prioritise this.
TBF we're discussing house cleaning, deep cleaning at that and we're somehow at social breakdown!
    Some like cleaning, some don't.
Some prefer having free time over cleaning and it seems some don't.
The one thing we have in common is that we all like a clean house:D

    Dust if you must

Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
    Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time,
    With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
    Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world's out there
    With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)
You, yourself, will make more dust.

No because they will most likely grow up to be horrible people who have no idea what real life entails.

    Are you for real??

I'll tell you what, I have a cleaner come in 2/3 hours a week, she cleans the floor way better than I do, she does the shower, dresses the bed and vacuums as well as the walls etc.
I only work about 20-25 hours a week, but I love my time off and I love a clean house. I have the money so why not-it would take me 4-5 hours to do what she does in 2 hours.
I pay her, so she has work and makes a few quid-that improves her quality of life.

I spent years working 60-70 hours per week to get where I am, I am damned if I am not gonna enjoy it. On a sunny day, I'd rather walk my dog, ride my bike, coffee/lunch with friends and/or family than trying to clean the house.

I was in construction, I completely renovated numerous houses myself and when people hired me to hang doors/lay floors, I would never call them lazy or say what are their kids gonna think of them.

I'd much rather people use common sense-I have a mate that spent nearly 2 days trying to figure out free to air and satellite angles etc, he asked me to help him, i told him to ring a mutual friend and get him to do it. Our friend came over and set up the tv in 40 minutes for e25-now tell me, was it worth my friends 2 days trying to do something that someone else did in a few minutes?

I pity you, you can't see the forest for the trees…….spend your life cleaning if you want, that makes for great stories when you are older…….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,615 ✭✭✭worded

Lots of mates partners (wives) bitch to their husbands about cleaning.
When the lads do the cleaning its not good enough, no matter how good it is, yet they wouldn't be let get a cleaner, and that's with both working (some doing shifts)

If I had my life over again I would def have got a cleaner years ago, I have listened to such bull over the years despite working excessive hours.

Its bad time management to be burning your self out working excessive hours and using free time to be cleaning up the house.

Anyway the X is giving an ear full to someone else now and Ive got a naked cleaner now

My girlfriend was the same as a lot of others here about getting a cleaner saying she wanted to do it but I got one anyway after a while. Not a chance in hell I'm going to be cleaning the bathroom on a Sunday and I definitely don't want to feel guilty letting her do it.

That's really the best thing about having one.. The extra time is great, even if I don't need it. But it not being a "thing" or a source of tension is the other benefit.

Starting the week with a spotless house is nice as well. I just can't imagine many house being as clean without a cleaner. Sure, some people are great at it but I wonder how many couples do it together equally so that it's never an issue.

Then there's sharing with other people. If you share, then splitting the cost of a cleaner once a week to remove the classic problem with sharing is more than worth it.

If cleaning your house is an issue then you have bigger issues in your relationship than a clean house

I've worked about eighty five hours in the week up to half an hour ago and my house is spotless. It takes me barely more than an hour a day every day to keep the house clean, I would call that a better use of my time than hour watching crap on telly or guzzling booze, but hey, everyone is different.

When I'm not living with total slobs, I basically use cleaning as a means of switching my brain off for an hour or so.

Really though, the only messes I ever have to clean up are notes and **** like that all over the place, which really have to be tidied up by me anyway.
