The first independent qualifying competition of the 2016/17 National Pike Championships will be held next Sunday 8th May. It will be a lake/river venue. Interested anglers should check in at Lynch`s Bar at Lisnalong on the Cootehill/Ballybay Road from 9.30 for fishing 11 to 4.
There is a change in the format of the competition this year. The number of independent qualifying competitions has been reduced from 10 to 7 and the number who go through to fish in the Final has been increased to 7 per qualifier. The Final will be held in April 2017. The winner of the Final will become the 2017 National Pike Champion and will captain the top 10 anglers in the Final in a 2 day International Team Challenge against Great Britain. This will be held in England in October 2017. The organisers, Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs (I.F.P.A.C.) will cover the cost of hotel B&B, presentation dinner etc for all team members.
Static ledgering with 2 rods is coming in this year on a trial basis under the following rules:
    1. Angler must stay where he casts his first line for the rest of the comp.
    2. Both rods are for ledgering no spinning, wobbling or float fishing allowed.
    3. If angler opts for ledgering at checkin he must stick with this option for the day.

To enter you must be a member of one of the 70+ clubs affiliated to the Federation. If you are not a member of one of these clubs you can easily join one at the check in for around €10. The entry fee is €15 and there is an optional €5 pool for the heaviest pike on the day.
The other 6 qualifiers are as follows
    2. June 12th river venue check in Foxs Bar Tooman
    3. July 3rd river venue check in Bridge House Bar Athleague
    4. Sept. 4th river venue check in Lukers Bar Shannonbridge
    5. Oct. 9th lake venue check in boat launch Belturbet
    6. Nov. 6th lake venue check in Lake View Bar Lough Egish
    7. Feb. 5th lake venue check in Fishermans Rest Bawnboy

Independent as in its not a league where you have to compete in all. If you are in the top 7 at the first qualifier you are into the Final and dont have to attend any other qualifier

Static ledgering in 20°C is a dangerous game regarding pike welfare. Even good bite indication and fast reactions in that heat often isn't enough to stop pike swallowing the hooks deeply.
Regarding bite indication, is it true that bite alarms are not mandatory in IFPAC competitions? And that floats are not actually allowed?

"Angler must stay where he casts his first line for the rest of the comp" - What if the angler realises that there is a bad snag in front of him after his first cast or he loses his first pike in one? Keep going and hope for the best?

In all IFPAC competitions up to now anglers used 1 rod and wobbling deadbaits was the name of the game. Many anglers do use floats and twitch it in which is basically wobbling closer to the surface. This can be very effective. This is also why flat fishing isnt allowed when an angler is using 2 rods ledgering. Of the 80 entry only 3 opted for ledgering. I would think the vast majority of pleasure pike anglers ledger deadbaits and use 2 rods. Personally I wobble all the time

Fair enough. But regarding ledgering, bite indication is very important. There's also that issue of a ledgering angler finding himself in front of a bad snag and being stuck there for the day.
Some pike welfare should be taken into consideration.
