Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

[Technical Questions] Bandit 1200 Fuel Economy gone crap

    Hi All,

Looking for some opinions / ideas if possible. I have a Bandit 1200 and the fuel economy has gone crap lately. My round trip to work typically uses €9 or so in fuel. Now it is using €14, so its significantly worse. ( I got 8 miles on one bar of petrol going by the gauge :( )

The bike runs good, the only thing that is noticeable is that when I am on the motorway cruising at 120, if I let off the throttle it becomes slightly hesitant. Once I put any amount of throttle back on it becomes fine again.

I checked the temp on the headers and noticed that cylinder 4 is running a lot cooler than the others. I pulled the plug and it is showing as running rich. There is a fair bit of carbon deposits on it. My compression tester is broken so I have ordered another. I changed the plug but it made no difference. Coils are also reading ok.

I looked at the inlet rubber on cylinder 4. There appears to be a small crack in it, but I suspect that it is only on the surface. I sprayed some WD40 on it while the engine was running and it did not make any difference.

I have ordered a carb rebuild kit and will clean / rebuild / balance the carbs including float needles and seats. I have also ordered a petcock rebuild kit. At €180 for a set of inlet rubbers I am hesitant to order them unless I am sure they are gone. I will do a full service including the above and valve clearances. I am also replacing the fuel / vacuum hoses all round.

Would the inlet rubber be a likely culprit given the symptoms above or does anybody have any other suggestions ??

    Much appreciated !

If your inlet rubber is cracked then it would change your air / fuel mix and would cause the poor throttle response and of course mess with your fuel economy.

So basically you answered your own questions.

An air leak would weaken the mixture though.

Check the float heights and that the floats aren't punctured and the needle valves are clean.

Make sure the brakes especially the back brake aren't dragging.

    Scrap the cap!

...air filter blocked or dirty ??

And check the oil - any smell of petrol of it ??

Just to follow up on this.

I took the carbs out and replaced the 4 float needles and seats. They all needed doing.

    Bike is running great again.
