Bad encounters with a certain ethnic minority.

So the other day I was visiting a friend in vincents hospital, was in the waiting room with him for a good hour and a half and he was called in to see hes doctor and told me he was going to be a good 20 minutes to a half hour, So I decide to go outside to get some hour and cool down as it was warm inside. I walk out and all the benches where taking so I sit down on some nearby steps and look through the news on my phone when after about five minutes I hear the very recognizable voices of this certain community from behind me and it sounds like its a large group but I just go about my business without a bother each to their own live and let live. After about two minutes a fairly largish stone lands right in front of me missing me by centimeters so I immediate know where this stone came from and got up and move as I was walking away I look back (deliberately waiting till i got a good distance before I do this) and notice three young children with this large group of men and women throwing stones at different people. I know kids will be kids but what really shocked me was the fact that an older male figure probably in hes late 20s if not 30s was directing the children on who to throw stones at. I know I know its all just part of the culture and im the evil one for walking away I should of just sat there and let meself be pelted with stones so they could have their fun. But what really annoyed me wasn't what happened to me it was the facts that someone could being visiting a really sick or possibly dying relative and the last thing they should have to put up with is this sort of thing when they are already probably in a bad enough mood or an emotional state.

And that concludes my latest bad encounter with that certain ethnic minority peaceful group, some of my encounters with them have included extreme violence and theft.

I predict that this thread will generate a reasoned and civilised discussion.

Not that I know who you mean but best to just let them on with it or you will be victimised or accused of being racist or something else. Not worth it...and going on history this thread won't last long either.....

You should'of said something to the adult.

You should'of said something to the adult.

Because an adult encouraging hes kids/young relatives to throw stones at people is going to be mature enough to talk to.

Are we not allowed to refer to them as Travellers now for fear the Boards PC Brigade will revolt?

The ancient stone throwing tradition between elders and younger I should consider myself lucky I got so up close and personal to such a beautiful ancient culture.

I deliberately made a point out of not mentioning the name of the ethnic minority in my original post to see how long it would be before someone guessed who I was talking about.

I wonder if you caught the biggest one and pulled him into a van and brought him up the mountains and tied him to a tree for 24 hrs would he learn from that?

I think he defo probably would but that is probably something out of a fiction tv series I am thinking of so better to just get up and walk away and thank god that this is not your way of life and go make your own better and the friends/ family you are visiting as you could be fighting those battles every single day and nothing would change.....or would it.......

When I was 17, I was walking home from school and had to pass a group of travellers. As I was walking by, one rougly the same age as me punched me in the face. There was a few others that were older and bigger than me so I couldn't hit him back. I just cursed them out of it and walked on. Of course some are given bad press but the majority are a shower of tramps.

So you registered an account to tell us this? Boards.ie now reaches more people than Joe Duffy it would appear.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Looking at many of the replies it's just a Traveller bashing free for all though. Hardly good honest debate going on here, just people essentially declaring how much they dislike Travellers.

Maybe if people where allowed to say what way they really feel it might force them to change their behavior. Instead of being forced into submission by the PC brigade people should speak their minds of how they really feel about these things. It is bad for the rest of society and it is especially bad for the travellers if people dont speak about it. How are they meant to know their actions are wrong if they are not criticized?

I've been incredibly unlucky in life, I've met many of them but failed to meet a good one. How unlucky am I given that there's apparently plenty of decent ones out there according to reports and articles I've read

I know. Never trust the Mormons I always say.(not really I have never met a Mormon)
Op throwing stones at people is not their culture. I know lots of travellers who are sound. Maybe you only notice them when they live down to your expectations and you don’t notice them when they don't conform to your prejudices.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Junkyard Tom

Did you ever wonder if maybe the Travellers are as frightened of you as you are of them? Remember they way everyone was afraid of sharks after that film about the shark that killed loads of people at a US beach resort... I think it was called 'The Shark who Killed for Fun' or something like that.

The majority of travellers in my local area are pure scum. Assaulting, robbing and vandalising. There is a genuine reason why they get a bad name.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,544 ✭✭✭Samaris

Yes, it's an ancient tradition of the Travellers.

Well, this thread started in idiotic places and continues apace!

Edit for the people that misunderstand "being a decent person" for "being PC": Don't be daft, of course it's not acceptable to fling stones at people and the "adult" of the group should have been reported instead of you wandering off and whinging on boards. Why not ...y'know, call the Gardai. You don't have to say "There's a group of mean travellers being mean to me!", you could just say "There's an adult and two kids harassing people in X place, throwing stones". Problem sorted and someone else might not get stones chucked at them. Where the so-called PC part of the conversation comes in is when people are saying "all travellers are scum".

Weird that this concept needs explaining to probably-adults.

You think a bunch of people ranting about how they hate Travellers on afterhours is going change the behaviour of some bad Travellers?

There's a definite discussion to be had about the issues with that particular community, this isn't it. This is a Traveller bashing thread for people to vent their disdain of Travellers.

Em no I just recognize they are much more likely to cause problems from my own experience, think about it like this for a second. They make up less than one percent of the population yet nine out of ten people has had a bad encounter with them? Do you think those percentages are normal?

Should have reported it to the front desk,im sure they have a procedure for anti-social expressions of culture.

If i never have to deal with the ****ers again it'll be too soon.

dont think its only travellers per say, more like every scum, that current system gives them free pass to act like degenerates, and god forbid you manage to catch such scum to give them a lesson, while its ok if some person gets their head smashed in,its only another 60th suspended conviction and slap on a wrist.

Its not like youd see normal father telling his kid to throw stones at people.
and minority word doesn't go well when your faced with 3-5 people gangs targeting single people like that.

Anyway op did safe thing and just moved on,while someone else could of scattered couple heads in return and land themselves with record and some jail time just because you know poor minority breeding new degeneration for better society.

What can the gardai do bar give them a talking to? The stone throwers where all under the age of prosecution and the adult wasn't actually throwing any stones himself. Even though he was encouraging them and having a good laugh about it.

Have I been missing something all my life, I acknowledge decent people when I meet them, I abide by society rules, I play the game..

But why the hell should I be told to respect other peoples wishes when they have absolutely no regard for my way of life. I am working my ass off for a living and I pay my taxes, which is hard enough to swallow considering the recent turn of events since 2007/8 and easily our country folded with Europes demands.

But why the hell in gods name am I paying extra taxes to accommodate these people who don't contribute anything back to society. I would be very interested to hear your views on that?

But why the hell do I have to put up with Pavee Point and the likes telling me to change my mind on this situation when the
    y can't / don't want to help themselves??

If the adult was encouraging them, I think he'd be liable on their behalf for being a complete tool. If nothing else, a Garda there would put a stop to any further messing about.

But hey, whining on boards about mean Travellers has made all the difference, hasn't it? :D

Didn't you have an opportunity to criticise them at the time? You tell them " throwing stones at people is wrong" and they go " oh shìt we didn't know that".
If they gave a fùck about you or your opinion they wouldn't be throwing stones at you.

Nine out of ten people? I think these "percentages" are just made up by you just now. Unless you have conducted a poll... A few bad apples do not imo taint a whole ethnic group as I judge people based on their own behaviour which is all they can control. An English person wronged me once ergo everyone from England is a fcuker?

In my day we could all scrap even the 5'8" 10 stone lads gave a good account of themselves, nowadays people seem to be a little softer.
I don't have a point but I do believe that it's easier for certain groups to "bully" the common man once he can't defend himself .
