Choosing an anti virus

I came across a website that sells reasonably prices internet security. It's called very cheap software. McAfee total protection is on sale for 21.95. I think this is a very good deal. The only problem is that it is the 2015 version. Will this make any difference?

Plenty of free options out there which are arguably better than paid versions. Windows defender is pretty good for example.

Free versions are great. No need to pay.

AVG free, avast, Malwarebytes are three such examples.

There are some good free protection packages out there, windows defender isn't one of them.
AVG free and malware bytes as a combo is ok for 80% of people

If I was going to spend money I wouldn't be spending it on antivirus but on backup software & NAS Drive.(USb drives connected to a pc just get infected )
Have seen customers running corporate managed AV and still get infected with the likes of crypto /telsa ransomware.

That being said, Malwarebytes & Malware bytes Beta for ransomware.
BitLocker or Eset ,ccleaner

I use the Ublock Origin and HTTPS everywhere plugins with WebRoot Secure Anywhere (lightest resource AV I've encountered) along with the occasional Malwarebytes scan. Windows Defender has very poor detection rates. Usually stick Avira free on relatives/friends machines.

Always found McAfee to be worse than a virus!
