Off sick after being diagnosed and hospitalised with multiple pulmonory emboli - blood clots - on my lungs.

Very serious and potentially fatal. Complication of recent surgery. Closest I've come to dying in my 45 years on this planet. Life is precious - tell those around that you love them. You could be gone tomorrow.

Lexie, you've been so ill. I hope you feel better for a while. :(

I'm arguing with my boss about whether to pay a dozen pounds a month for three users to have a pay version of freeware that we depend on for daily communication between the office in England and the office in Ireland (the office in Ireland being yours truly and the occasional desk cat). He's the world's loudest vapourware proponent and he's always telling me, "I don't want to buy this when TechSoftCo is coming out with something in a few months that will work even better". If wishes were horses, we'd have to have horse culls to protect the environment.

Already wanting to start the weekend with a Scotch after helping two users in remote sessions with strange issues.

They both had the same problem; they couldn't get documents to attach to a customer record. The first user drove me nuts. A remote session means that I am literally controlling the user's computer and using their mouse, etc. So when we discovered that she always got an error when she clicked on the file link, and I never got it, it was just as though the software acted differently on the same equipment for each of us doing the same thing, which does not happen. Turned out she was double-clicking the link, which caused the system to attempt to open the document twice, and for reasons of good database hygiene, a record should not be open twice. I was single-clicking the link. Ugh. The second user was complaining that the document wouldn't show up no matter how many times she added it to her record's history. After my boss remoted in and couldn't isolate the issue, I discovered that she had sorted her records by date and had the earliest records appearing first. As soon as I reversed the sort order to show the most recent first, we discovered about a hundred of her attempts to attach the same document to the same record.

tl;dr, two users called us for support when there was actually nothing wrong with the software. PEBCAK error. ID10T error. You all know the sort of thing. :)

Speedwell, I don't know how you deal with all that stuff. I'd be in the mad house.
We bought a new fridge during summer and I called them up to complain it wasn't working.... I hadn't plugged it in.

    I am still waiting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,809 ✭✭✭Speedwell

Tech support is the madhouse. No, but seriously, every profession has its "silly user errors", from plumbers who have to diagnose stuck toilets all the way up to medical specialists who diagnose serious illnesses. It's part of the price of being "the expert". You cannot expect users to be experts; it isn't their job.

And on that note and without further ado, I am attempting to block out some time for watching tutorial videos so I can pass yet another certification test, so that's where I am right now, firmly planted in my desk chair pretending to do work. :)

Stuck to the sofa feeling ill but trying to teach myself Dreamweaver. I don't do much webdesign but need to now and again and also good to know the backend of DW for making content changes on websites.

Pity my stomach and head are making me just want to sleep.
