interesting to see that they're adding a cycleway, they've done the same all along the N56 realignments in the west of the county. Is this a new standard or just going to be done on a case by case?
I can't say if it's a new standard, but I can report that the same was done on the N59 Galway->Clifden road at the realignments that were done near Clifden. The old road is now used as a cycleway - a welcome development, IMO.

Yeah it's still years off being built though from what I've heard when it's needed right now. I was in town earlier and there was a Garda trying (and failing) to direct traffic at the Port/High/Main Street junction as nobody could move with cars stuck in the yellow box, total chaos with every street gridlocked.

Anyway, interesting to see that they're adding a cycleway, they've done the same all along the N56 realignments in the west of the county. Is this a new standard or just going to be done on a case by case?

Yes it's part of the Type 3 single carraigeway standard. 2x 3.0m lanes, and segregated cycle paths. It'll mainly be used on the N56, N59, N67, N70, N71, and the N86. It's for lightly used "tourist" routes with reasonably low but seasonal traffic volumes and in difficult terrain/sensitive areas. Many of these routes are deplorable for large stretches.

Several stretches have been completed already:

    N59 Derrylea realignment
    N86 Annascaul-Gortbreagoge
    N56 Dungloe-Glenties phases 1/2

    Thanks for the answer.

It's good that the old parts of roads are now being re-used as cycle paths, instead of just lying orphaned by the side unused.

N61 Coolteige gone to tender: https://irl.eu-supply.com/app/rfq/publicpurchase_frameset.asp?PID=116392&B=ETENDERS_SIMPLE&PS=1&PP=ctm/Supplier/publictenders

Of the 4 schemes promised by Shane Ross/DTTAS in May, 3 have gone to tender. Good to see.

Only the N2 realignment near Emyvale has yet to be tendered.

    on the N55
    - N55 Corduff to South of Killydoon Realignment Scheme is funded and tendered for, just waiting now for news on a start (so south of Ballinagh, further removing bad sections of the road not already tackled) http://www.anglocelt.ie/news/roundup/articles/2017/02/15/4134991-council-defers-adoption-of-roads-budget/
as mentioned before, contracts were signed but it wasnt clear whether works had started or not.
I drove the road there last week and theres indeed works progressing nicely from from the town boundary of Ballinagh, skirting Lacken GAA pitch and bypassing a couple of 90 degree bends and then a realignment of a straight but narrow stretch through bogland joining up with an already upgraded part of the road.
Everything is happening offline which explains the lack of any road closures, yet.

Sligo County Council proceeding with topological investigation of a planned realignment of the N16 in Co. Sligo between Drumkilsellagh and Lugnagall, on the north west of Copes Mountain.

Any realignment of the N16 is to be welcomed, for that's one shocking road to drive.

Another wee bit of the N2 between Monaghan Town and Emyvale up for realignment. As far as I remember this is the last twisty bit left on that road. They have slowly over the past few years done small sections of this road.

Well spotted. This is the last of the 4 safety schemes being built with VAT savings from tolls. (N2, N56, N61 & N70)

Type 2 single carraigeway means that this is only a temporary measure though. We are planning dual carraigeway north of here from Derry to the NI border so this will likely become an alternative route in a few years time.

Yes, it will eventually make a nice tourist route when the Type 2 DC replaces this whole stretch.

This has been retendered. Unsure as to why:

Just a quick note on this. Earthworks seem to be finished here, I believe work stopped for a bit due to financing:

Badly needed scheme due to an appalling dip & bend
And just to update this, appears to be going nowhere atm. Not sure what the issue is tbh

95% likely it's down to funding

Some very minor works about km south of clonmellon on the N52 looks like WCC are doing some road widening works

Apparently they made "a balls of it" at the start (according to a local!)

Whereabouts on the road are they working? Are they widening the surface / straightening a bend or just opening up the sightlines through a bend?

Always good to see a bit of work on this route.

They’re working over I'd say a 200 meter stretch going south about 1km outside clonmellon. They have removed all the hedge and are building up an embankment but with the type of material that I see them rolling I can't be certain if it is for a lane as it didn't look like great fill. Maybe they plan to put in a barrier, I never even realised there was a big drop until the hedge was gone. WCC have their own men and plant on site by the looks of things

IMPROVEMENT works at one of the most “dangerous” and “busiest” junctions in County Limerick have been accelerated by councillors in the Cappamore-Kilmallock municipal district.

They backed the latest stage in the process to construct a €2 million roundabout at Beary’s Cross on the N24. It connects the R513 Limerick to Mitchelstown Road with the Limerick to Tipperary Road.

Tim Fitzgerald, of the Mid-West National Road Design Office, and consulting engineers - Kilgallen & Partners, gave local councillors a presentation on submissions received after it went on public consultation. It will be a four leg roundabout, north and south on the N24, the link to Mitchelstown and Murroe-Boher GAA club’s pitch.

Looks as if the N60 Oran realignment is finally getting underway.

According to the Cavan County Council website the N55 realignment will be complete by October 2018. there is a reduced speed limit on the road now and there will be traffic lights from tomorrow (Monday) just south of Ballinagh for 4 weeks which I think is for the scheme.
