Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

KatW4 would you be interested in a loving home for one of those kittens when they're old enough? We're looking for a companion for our current lone cat and I'd love if she had an origin story like that. :)

We're in Munster but will travel!

Love this, I was showing my son the pics and he also asked could we get one. Unfortunately my two (cats) are a bit too long in the tooth for a kitten but I'd love to get another.....

I'm sure that would be absolutely fine :) I'll PM you in a few weeks! And I better double check with my boyfriend but there shouldn't be a problem. It would be great to know that the little thing would be going to a loving owner. :)

Oh my goodness, that's the best news ever if your boyfriend agrees! Let me know the county you're in whenever you get a chance so we can plan a trip there to coincide with the adoption! They're so adorable!

It's not problem at all :D we live in Offaly so we are pretty far away. It'll be about a few weeks before we can give them away according to the vet! They're really cute and they're growing every day!

I introduced an eight-week-old kitten to my two 14-year-olds last year. They clearly thought I had lost my mind, but everyone is a little happier now that the kitten has stopped biting and jumping on everything that moves. And the old boy and girl are obviously happier and more active than they were Before Kitten.

I've always wanted an excuse to visit Offaly! I heard 8 weeks is the safest bet for weaning and then it's best to leave them with their peers until 3 months for socialisation. So we might come collect the weekend of Aug 13? Looking forward to that's going to make the summer very exciting!

Sounds perfect to me :) I'm away until the 12th so it'll be the perfect timing. You'll be counting down the days I bet :)

They've started to open their eyes today! It's mad that they're a week old already!!! :O

    Hi Guys

We're looking after a stray mammy cat and her three kittens. Only one cat has her eyes open, the second had her eyes open and they've shut up again (guessing from eye infection) and the third hasn't opened his eyes at all yet. We're at the sixteen day stage now. Looked online and saw that you could use cotton balls/warm water, has anyone had experience with this?

    Thanks
    Jennifer

Could you please post a photo of the kittens' eyes?

Could you bring them to a vet?

At work right now but will post a pic this evening. Mammy cat came with an eye infection (gunky eyes) so chances are it was passed onto them... Will definitely take them to a vet if their eyesight is at risk.

Then yes, if mammy's eyes are bad I'd say a trip to the vet is your best bet. Poor little things, they must be very uncomfortable... :(

Its not just their eyesight, kittens are fragile and their immune systems wont be fully formed yet, simple infection could actually kill them or stunt their development.

We got talking to the vet and asked if they thought we should take mammy/kittens in. He said that it sounded like cat flu (common with strays/outdoor cats) and gave us gel/ointment for their eyes and said it would either work or it wouldn't!! He said there was no point in taking them in as this would be the same treatment they would receive. Will do the ointment/cotton ball treatment for the next few days/however long it takes! Fingers crossed...

Did he not prescribe antibiotics for the flu?

Cat flu is a herpesvirus. Antibiotics are not appropriate for use against viruses. They are and should only be prescribed in the case of a secondary bacterial infection. If they weren't, I can only assume that no bacterial infection was diagnosed, or that all of the cats would need to be treated to prevent reinfection (and that might not have been feasible due to the type of virus present or the age of the kittens).

Oh, thanks for the info. I've always been prescribed antibiotics when I brought in cats with flu, so presumably they had secondary infections. When I brought my girl (who is now a ten year old lump of lard), she was only a few weeks and vet gave her a shot of antiB, but she was in a very bad way with ulcers in the mouth etc. :(

Yeah, I have always been presented with antibiotics "as a precaution", but the last time, my cats weren't given any. The vets explained what signs I should watch out for. Fortunately the cats only had normal upper respiratory infections and though they didn't like having their noses cleared with a bulb aspirator (like you would do for babies) and their food syringed into them (since they didn't feel like eating what they couldn't smell), they didn't have bacterial involvement.

A few other viruses are also called, broadly, "cat flu", so it is never 100 percent certain which is meant, and some may tend to have more bacterial complications than others, too.

Luckily they have no problem eating (drinking) as they are attached to mammy cat half the time and getting bigger everyday, squealing like normal, etc. Hopefully this gel combined with the cottonballs soaked in warm water will do the trick. Have been having a hard time sourcing kitten food locally (for mammy cat) so might have to get it online...

LIDL do a big cheap bag of kitten food - I used it when I was feeding a new mammy cat and her kittens were eating it too.

Its probably not the most amazing quality but considering she was using the bin as a food source it was certainly better than that!

Two of the kitten's (Oreo and Twinkie) eyes are now open! Truffles was the worst and one of her eyes is opening a bit so progress has been made! Can't figure out how to post pictures on here...

If you click on 'Go Advanced' instead of 'Quick reply', it'll open up a screen with way more icons/shortcuts. Click on the paperclip, this will open a pop-up window. Select your file, scroll to the right and click on 'Upload'. The uploaded file will appear just above the 'Attachment key' heading. Close the pop-up window, and save your thread. The picture will appear as an attachment, as long as it's within the allowed size limits.

There are other ways/other steps if you want your picture to appear as an image on thread instead of seeing just the link for it.

See what you think, pm me if you have any problems. :)

I'm dying to see the kitties... :p:o

Oreo is much cuter than that picture but he's been awkward/super wriggly/loud since the day he was born so getting a good picture is a bit of a pain!

Mammy cat has left one of the kittens under a table in the sitting room and gone back to the other kittens in the kitchen... should I be worried? There is a stray outside on the kitchen window that has a view of the cat bed so I'm wondering if she feels threatened?

Yeah she might do. Does she mind you handling the kittens?

We can hold them away from her for about a minute for she starts giving out. We can hold them in front of her for a good while.

Time for her to get neutered and turn into a chubby house cat I think ;)

Oh yeah... we're planning on getting her neutered but the kittens are only 17 days old so she has at least 6 weeks of mammy duty left!

You know the way Batman has a bat signal? I am now convinced that we have a cat signal over the house. Mammy cat's daughter (2 years old approx) that hangs out with her was being let into the house for a while each day as she missed her Mum. We started to get the sneaking suspicion that she too was pregnant. Guess What? Our suspicions were proved correct yesterday evening when Mammy cat number 2 had 3 kittens in our living room! We now have Shadow (our live in Number 1 cat) Mammy cat no 1 (Squeak) and her 3 kittens (Twinkie, Oreo and Truffles) and Mammy cat no 2 and her 3 unnamed kittens! Oh the humanity...

Nine out of ten vets I asked to neuter my ten-week-old rescue kitten flatly refused, and the tenth only agreed because I was referred by an existing client who was a breeder. They wanted to wait until he was five months old. From the looks of this boy, he would have been an early-to-mature problem child.

Pediatric spay and neuter prevents "home for unwed mothers" scenarios at homes and shelters, folks. :)

It's going to be an absolute madhouse!! The 19 day old kittens are doing their best to walk - in about a week they'll be running around the place and will probably try to play with the newborns! This is why we only have a neutered male, so kittens wouldn't be an issue! We are going though at least a box of cat food a day, we'll have to mix some dry food in!

Well...same think happen in my garden last night, stray cat gave birth to 5 kittens. I cannot have them in my garden as I have a dog that will not get along with them as they drive him mad, so for the moment the dog is not going into the garden anymore, but this cannot go on. What can I do? I live in Limerick, is there any animal welfare that can take them?

Yes, google your local rescues and ask them for assistance.

If you bring the dog out on a lead the cat will likely move the kittens along herself as she wont want them at risk.

Realistically we are going through 10 boxes of cat food a week as mammy cats get SUPER hungry plus our own cat also loves his food! As soon as we realized mammy no.2 was in labour, we had to go into town and get a cat bed for her too. Very expensive business!
