FAI Cup 2016

Might as well start a thread. With the Premier Division looking likely to be between Dundalk and Cork and Limerick having already sewn up the First Division, there will be plenty of teams looking at the FAI Cup as their main hope of glory this season. Second round starts on Friday night with 16 matches over the weekend.

Tie of the round is the clash of Bohemians and Galway on Friday night in Dalymount. Can Bohs finally score a goal after a long drought? Can Galway continue their fine form this season in the cup? I think it will be a tight match that could go to a replay but Galway will imo go through.

Holders Dundalk will welcome Shels to Oriel Park in a repeat of last years second round tie. That ended 5-0 to Dundalk and with them having hit Harps for seven last week a repeat scoreline wouldnt be a surprise. Other fancied teams such as Cork, Shamrock Rovers and St Patricks face non-league opposition in St Peters, Midleton and Pike Rovers respectively. Very hard to see a shock in any of those matches and also hard to see a shock result when other contenders Derry and Sligo Rovers play first division opposition in Drogheda and Cabinteely.

Chances of an upset could be in Ballybofey where a Finn Harps team who have struggled in recent matches play Crumlin United and in Cobh where Ramblers take on Cherry Orchard.

Two all non league clashes in Ringmahon and Janesboro with Sheriff YC being an interesting team in this years cup.

    Matches:
    Friday 20th May
    19:45
    Dundalk vs Shelbourne
    Bohemians vs Galway United
    Derry City vs Drogheda United
    UCD vs Bray Wanderers
    Waterford United vs Longford Town
    Cork vs St Peters
    20:00
    Firhouse Clover vs Wexford Youths
    Shamrock Rovers vs Midleton

    Saturday 21st May
    14:00
Bluebell United vs Limerick (Now in Markets Field)
    Ringmahon Rangers vs Glebe North
    14:30
    Cobh Ramblers vs Cherry Orchard
    15:00
St Patricks Athletic vs Pike Rovers
    19:45
    Athlone Town vs Letterkenny Rovers
    Sligo Rovers vs Cabinteely
    20:00
    Finn Harps vs Crumlin United

    Sunday 22nd May
    14:00

Im a sucker for a Premier Division side v non league side game, looking forward to City v St.Peters tonight, good chance for second string players to show up.

Not confident at all that we will beat Galway, it's make or break tonight, lose and the season is over!!

That game between Bluebell and Limerick has been reversed and will take place in Limerick tomorrow. I think Bluebell gave us home advantage with a view to their share of the gate receipts, but I'm not sure.

Might be good to update that in the OP.

Half Time scores in tonights matches

    UCD 3-0 Bray Wanderers
    Dundalk 1-0 Shels
    Bohemians 1-0 Galway
    Cork 3-0 St Peters
    Derry 0-1 Drogheda
    Waterford 0-2 Longford
    Shamrock Rovers 1-0 Midleton
    Firhouse Clover 0-0 Wexford Youths

Could be a shock in the Brandywell if it stays like this. Also a surprise to see UCD winning by three goals.

Full time scores from tonights matches

    UCD 4-3 Bray Wanderers
    Dundalk 2-0 Shels
    Bohemians 2-0 Galway
    Cork 4-0 St Peters
    Derry 1-1 Drogheda
    Waterford 0-2 Longford
    Shamrock Rovers 4-0 Midleton
    Firhouse Clover 0-3 Wexford Youths

Stand out result is Drogheda's draw in Derry, which was the only drawn match tonight. Derry missed a penalty aswell as scoring one but that must be frustrating result for them and they now have to go to United Park for a replay. Best game seemed to be in the UCD Bowl where the hosts went 3-0 up in the first half then conceded 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half before scoring a fourth goal to defeat Bray after missing a penalty at 3-3. Good win for Bohs against Galway which they hope will lead to them kicking on in the league to get away from the relegation zone. Comfortable wins for Cork, Shamrock Rovers and Wexford against non-league opposition while there was also comfortable wins for Dundalk and Longford.

Of course I missed the game at the Bowl
We've actually played out some entertaining games against Bray over the last 3 or 4 seasons. A 5-3 win and a 5-4 loss being the two that stick out.
First cup win against a league side in 6 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Reading that ucd missed a penalty, and bray had two goals disallowed too.

Hammer, that 5-4 game was nits, remember it well. Wasn't at the 5-3, so no comment there.

I was sat right in front of that when it happened... From what it looked at the time it didn't look as bad as that... ****in hell that's awful. Paddy was having a great night up to that point.

Was nice leaving Dalyer with the win. What was up with Quigley though? Didn't celebrate the peno then was one of the first off the pitch?

Crumlin beat Finn Harps 1-0. It's been a disastrous last few games for Harps

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,224 ✭✭✭overshoot

Horgans unwillingness to use the squad is a bit baffling at this point. 7 of the team tonight were starting their 5th game in 14 days. They were out on their feet by the Dundalk game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,935 ✭✭✭kksaints

    Results from Saturday's matches.

    Bluebell United 2-5 Limerick
    Ringmahon Rangers 2-1 Glebe North
    Cobh Ramblers 2-1 Cherry Orchard
St Patricks Athletic 8-0 Pike Rovers
    Athlone Town 0-0 Letterkenny Rovers
    Sligo Rovers 3-0 Cabinteely
    Finn Harps 0-1 Crumlin United

We destroyed Pike in Richmond this afternoon. Could easily have been double figures with us missing a peno and having a goal disallowed rather harshly. Three of our goals came directly from free kicks. B Dennehy played very well for the half he played in and Graham Kelly was also in fine form although its very hard to make any judgements on players as Pike were so very poor.

Big shock in Donegal with Crumlin knocking out Harps. Harps are on a poor run of form now, they need the mid season break soon. Athlone also only drew at home with Letterkenny but with how poor Athlone have been this season its hard to know how much of a shock result this is. Sligo and Limerick won well as they were expected to do while Cobh managed to avoid a replay with a 2-1 win and Ringmahon beat Glebe in the all non-league tie.

In fairness it seems like Crumlin are one of the stronger teams in the LSL/AUL scene. They beat Firhouse Clover 5-1 lately who weren't a terrible side at all, and Collinstown were pretty impressive as well.

Crumlin and Bluebell are the best 2 "non league" sides in the country. Finn Harps are not in good form and the scalp was always expected likely. Limerick are in good form and I'm not sure Bluebell were expecting much from the fixture. Both teams are very much in the business end of the season and have to play each other in what very well could be a title decider. Dare I suggest that Bluebell's performance and result (and the fact that they're still not sitting in a bus home from the game at the time of writing) may have them in a better prepared position for the next few fixtures????

in fairness we dispatched Avondale 2 years ago on equally bad form only in the lower half of D1. They had just won their third FAI intermediate cup in a row. Crumlin have LOI players, would no doubt show well in D1 but a premier LOI team, at home should still be able to account for them.

Our form was fine until 8 days ago. Asking a part time team to play 5 games in 15 days with no squad rotation bar injuries was madness. Molloy in particular had put in 90mins of football (the bulk of that in the first game) before starting those 5.
Id nearly worry for the break, why would the fringe players hang around?

Janesboro beat Sheriff 2-1 in todays match.

So two replays in this round Drogheda vs Derry in United Park and Letterkenny vs Athlone in Letterkenny. Both take place on Tuesday night.

Last year, it was mid-July. 3rd round usually takes place the end of August. It's done this way to help the intermediate club. Giving them a chance by having the rounds at which they're likely to still be in the competition at the end of one season and the start of another, rather than during their off-season. A bit of a joke the way there's such a huge gap, though. And this effectively cup ties the entire league, so they're ineligible if they move to another club. Happened with City last season with Stephen Beattie and Kilduff in 2013. There's also a similarly big gap in the League Cup, presumably to prevent congestion for teams in Europe in July.

They should just split the timing of the competitions and have them on during opposite halves of the season. Start the League Cup earlier (pre-season) and have the final on in May or just before the mid-season break. Or else maybe during the weekend that's kept off, since it won't impact other teams with postponements (provided it doesn't infringe on annual leave entitlements or some arrangement can be made). Have the first round of the Cup in early August - as it's between the intermediate sides, they'll all be on a level pegging and no LoI side will get the advantage of catching them off-season. Have the 2nd round late August, when the 3rd round is currently scheduled, and work from there.

This would provide a bit of momentum for both competitions, having them in a shorter time-frame. Any momentum for the League Cup at the moment stops dead at the quarter-final stage - it can't be built up when the semi-final happens three months later and doesn't get going until the final. Likewise, the FAI Cup doesn't really get going until the quarters. It's easier to take more interest in competitions that take place at shorter, more regular intervals than the stop-start manner they happen at the moment. It'd also be nice to have a final in the summer.

This all makes too much sense. Come August some supporters will have forgotten if they have been knocked out or not the time between rounds is great.

Home to Limerick is an interesting tie for us. They have dominated the first division and have a serious forward line but this will be a step up in class for them. It wont be easy for us anyway but I think we will go through
    .
Big guns kept apart in the rest of the draw. Shams and Dundalk have fairly easy ties, a trip to Longford shouldn't worry Cork. UCD and Cobh have good opportunities to make it to the QF. Bohs and Derry is probably the tie of the round although Bohs would need to improve from last week to go through. Wexford against Sligo is a tricky match to predict and could easily go to a replay.

Away to Longford is a pain in that its another away game. Was hoping for anyone at home. The fixture congestion CCFC are facing is insane.

I know it's great that the FAI are giving Dundalk and Cork the best opportunity to progress in Europe but it's incredibly short sighted. If one of them was to make the group stages, the fixture congestion they'd face for the rest of the season, if they were to go on a cup run, would be absolutely insane.

Dundalk will be delighted with that draw as they should be able to rest players and get into the next round at the same time.

Third round of the cup this weekend with four matches tomorrow night.

Athlone Town vs Shamrock Rovers 7 45pm
    St Patrick's vs Limerick 7 45pm
Bohemian vs Derry City 7 45pm
Wexford Youths vs Sligo Rovers 8 00pm

Very hard to know how the match in Richmond is going to go. Limerick have been dominant in the first division and they beat Derry in the league cup semi final so they are certainly not the usually first division side that you draw in the cup. Our own form has improved somewhat recently with 4 wins in 5 even if the performance haven't been that great. Its a tough one but I'm hopefully we are going to go through to the quarter finals.

Two all premier division ties with Bohs and Derry probably the pick of those matches. Bohs had a good comeback win on Monday so they go into this with some hope however Derry have been very impressive this season and did win at Dalymount a few weeks ago in a terrible match so the away draw shouldnt cause them any problems. I'd be reasonably confident that Derry will go through. The other all premier tie between Wexford and Silgo is a good chance for Silgo to comeback after Monday nights collapse against Bohs. They had been in good form up until that and thrashed Wexford a few weeks ago in Ferrycarrig. With Wexford still in a relegation battle and some injury problems. Silgo should go through.

Athlone havent been as bad as I thought they would be after their entire team left in June, they even beat Shels although they have lost their last five matches with a thrashing by UCD being a particularly low. But they stand no chance against Shamrock Rovers and I'd be surprised if Shams dont win by at least 3 or 4 goals.

    Results from tonights matches.

Athlone Town 0 vs 5 Shamrock Rovers
    St Patrick's 2 vs 0 Limerick
Bohemian 0 vs 2 Derry City
Wexford Youths 2 vs 1 Sligo Rovers

Good win for us in Richmond tonight sounded like we were under a bit of pressure for the first 20 minutes but then worked our way into the match, got the goal before half time and then were comfortable for the second half and got the insurance goal in the last 15 minutes. Limerick's first loss of the season.

In the other games a surprise result in Wexford with Youths beating Sligo 2-1. After their poor recent form and Sligo playing well not too many would have predicted this result but a late goal wins it for Wexford. Bohs poor season continues with a home loss to Derry to knock them out of the cup. Losing two players before half time and Akinede not starting hardly helped their chances but it must be disappointing to go out at this stage. Derry fine sason continues. Shams are also through after a facile win over Athlone. Minor surprise that it was scoreless to halftime but it was no surprise what happened in the second half.

Limerick's first lose was against Cobh in the MSC ;)

But fair play to Pats they had a game plan and executed it to perfection. Put men behind the ball and forced Limerick to do something but couldn't break them and had no plan B. Should have been three up before ye even got the second. Be a much better game in the final and hopefully ye can make a bit of noise next time :)

Three matches on tomorrow with Crumlin vs Dundalk on the 30th.

Ringmahon Rangers vs Cobh Ramblers 6 00pm
    UCD vs Janesboro 7 00pm
Longford vs Cork City 7 30pm

Cant say I know much about the teams playing in the first two matches. Wouldnt be madly surprised to see a draw in one of the matches although UCD and Cobh should still go through. Longford have hired Alan Matthews again so it would be interesting to see if there will be the new manager 'bounce' for Longford. Goals seem to have dried up for Cork and Longford's defense was tight against us on Monday only conceding to a Timlin free kick so it will be an interesting tie albeit its hard to see Cork getting knocked out.
