Friday Night 80's

Listening in to Friday Night 80's on Today FM this evening, and I'm getting the impression that Phil Cawley might be leaving the show? He was saying that there are "Big changes" coming, and that as soon as he knew he'd let listeners know, and basically was talking about how long he'd been doing the show and stuff...

Was only half listening, so I may have caught the wrong end of the stick here, so did anyone else hear any more of this?

I'd be very sad to see Phil leave the show, he makes long drives of a Friday very enjoyable...

He was chatting to Louise today, didn't hear exactly what they were saying as I was working, but she was saying how he is always there. He then said that he is kept in a glass case and left out when needed. But didn't hear the full context of the chat.

Really love Friday night 80's heard a bit tonight, but not that. Hope he doesn't go.

Maybe it'll become Friday night 90's, small success at Non Stop Ninties, would make sense to move with the times?

I've noticed over the past 4-6 weeks, Friday night 80s is clearly voicetracked with Phil Cawley. No stand in presenters lately, as is usually the case.
Which is a shame as it was up to recently a very interactive show.

It is probably one of the longest running radio shows in the country and has been on Today FM since around the re-branding from Radio Ireland in 1998.

Is it time to compile a list of its presenters over the years???

Phil said earlier that he has been presenting it for 9 years now and that before him there was only Jim O'Neill and a Keogh guy, forget his first name but Phil said he was the husband of the TodayFM newsreader Susan Keogh.

Stephen Keogh. He was on the station for a couple of years in the late '90's, early '00's. I think he moved back to regional radio.

Tim Kelly did that show too many times as has Bob Conway, but more as fill ins I guess.

The shuffle that Phil mentioned is probably to do with Louise Duffy moving to evenings. Maybe she's getting a Friday evening slot too.

Yeah, they could be looking to just do a straight swap of Friday Night 90's and Friday Night 80's...

That could explain why some recent shows have been Voice Tracked, Friday Night 90's is currently VT'd, so maybe Phil is getting practice in for the swap?

I think Declan Meehan was one of the early presenters of Friday Night 80s if memory serves me right.

Stephen Keogh went on to be one of the original presenters of Dublin's Country 106.8 (now Sunshine 106.8). He has been with Kildare's KFM since its launch in 2004 and that is where he is today. I know we are going off the subject but Paul Power is another former Today FM presenter on KFM.

    Going back on topic:
Today FM has changed over the years and its music-mix, with the exception of one or two specialist programs, tends to be largely '90s, '00s and more recent. It has an image of being a cool modern station and Friday Night '80s is probably sounding a bit jaded now - it certainly seems to be the odd one out.

Interesting list. I only knew that Stephen, Tim, Phil, Declan, Bob and "Floodie" (and maybe Brian McColl) presented this program! In fact, I did not even know that Gerry Gogan (Larry's son!) and Cliff Walker were even involved with Today FM!

I half heard that as well, as i'm in the shed & just popped out & missed a few bits & just came across something on Louise's move on the Indo earlier on.

I remember when Phil had the 1-4 or was it 5pm M-F gig & FN80's used to be on until 11pm!

I wonder where he'll get shifted as usually he refers himself as Phil-In Cawley:D

Its had more fill in presenters than songs on its playlist over the years.

Declan presented the show long before it got the name Friday Night 80's. The boy wonder took it on then and got a good year out of it.

I was in studio with Enda one evening and I can remember Cliff Walker on the show as well before he went to England; he even borrowed a 12" or two of mine and ripped them onto the playback PC :)

For some reason I think Ian Dempsey actually filled in one evening though that may have been the beer talking :D

Is that a DJ name or real name & any relation to Jonnie Walker :D

As i didn't realise when listening to Atlantic 252, aah those were the days  that Dusty Rhodes was from Dublin as he treated his mother once to a request once.

Although now when i think of it, there was a Sandy Banks there too :p

He worked on South East Radio and The Voice of Peace as Kiefer Shannon. And no, that's not his real name either :)

Thanks, you wonder about some of these names, like Rick O Shea & found a while ago that Nikki Hayes wasn't her real name, i wouldn't thought it, but was in the paper once.

But seriously, did you really think Cliff Walker was his real name?? I suppose he could have had the surname and decided to add a funny connection!

Still a few more shows to go, but Phil has just confirmed that he is leaving Friday Night 80's, and that it's time to move on. He's not sure what will be happening when he goes, but more details will be given closer to his final show.

Is Phil leaving Today FM altogether, or just the show did he say?

I'm not sure if he's leaving the station altogether, but I'll keep an ear out. I'm sure he'll mention it again in the next hour, and indeed during the next few shows.

I'd say Phil is being moved to make way for some soon to be former txfm staff, shame as I like Phil seems like a genuine chap and doesn't indulge in much waffle.

If Phil does leave Today FM, this will mean that Declan Meehan will be the only presenter left from the original Radio Ireland lineup.

Was Jim O'Neill one of the originals, or did he join when re-branded in 1998?

Afaik, he'd said it's time to move on, as he's been doing the show for years, (can't remember the no.) & will let people know nearer end of June?
Was Jim O'Neill one of the originals, or did he join when re-branded in 1998?

I don't know, but he has filled in a few occasions.

Afaik Tim Kelly used to fill in as well, he's been around the station for a good while, but they could never find a spot for him, as his banter didn't always come off great with newsreaders groaning to him, including at times mentioning AM Kelly ("the missus")

Afaik, he's now a Ghostbuster, good timing that;)

Jim O'Neill was not around at the beginning. His voice was first heard when the station was rebranded as Today FM in January 1998 - he was the voice of the rebrand! It was some time later - possibly in 1999 - when he started presenting on Today FM. For many years he presented Classic Gold Sunday from 1pm. It is only in the last year that he was moved to Sunday evenings with "On the Road". I don't think he was ever a fill-in presenter on Today FM, including Friday Night 80s.

Tim Kelly was one of the batch of new voices to Today FM immediately after the rebrand. He did initially have his own shows before he became a fill-in presenter. He certainly was a presenter of Friday Night 80s.

Jim O'Neill has recently been filling in on 'a handful' of shows mainly at weekends and bank holidays / holiday periods since he returned to Ireland, from I think South Africa in 2014. Before this, Classic Gold Sunday was voicetracked from his base overseas.

Tim Kelly was the 'permanent' mid morning weekday presenter on Today FM between Mark Cagney vacating that slot in 1999 and Ray D'Arcy starting in 2000.
He was also 'permanent' presenter on the early morning weekday breakfast 5 - 7 am when Anne Marie Kelly left.

    Ah, that's what voicetracked means!

I remember one FN80s afaik it was last GoodFri?
Jim was filling in, as i sent in a request & got a shock when he read it out about 90m later, must get a lot in that show.

I remember now when Tim was in before Ray, he had a similar 9@11 segment every day, but the day he heard Ray was coming in, you could hear him fuming, by saying "will he do a better job than me, i don't think not" i remember that as his show wasnt' that bad, but it was only himself then.

    Everything changes, i guess;)

Voice-tracked is just the industry term for pre-recorded. The links in between songs are done ahead of time, and just lined up in a queue with the music.

Possibly around the time when the stand in presenters for d'arcy just played music. then they brought in guest presenters soon after for talk, and continues to this day with anton savage's show, mostly annoying people like neil delamare

Tim Kelly also had a disastrous stint hosting The Blast after Ray Foley moved to lunchtimes.

Is it being kept as Friday Night 80s or will it be a new show altogether? I wonder if they'll just rebrand it as a general "oldies" show and play 90s/00s stuff too.

If it's a case that the show is to cease, could they go down the Nova route and do an 80s/90s show up until, say, midnight?

When friday night 80s began, Mark Byrne was presenting breakfast, Tim Kelly was presenting midmornings. Phil Cawley was presenting afternoons and Eamon Dumphy was presenting the last word. When you think about how much the station has changed, its done very well to last this long, same goes for Declan and Jim.

Was listening in last week, and they said it was being replaced by an Anthems show, also heard On The Road on a Sunday is to be dropped as well.

Any legalities of listening to Nova in my car through my phone and bluetooth speaker that anyone knows of. They were two great shows for a long drive on a Friday or Sunday evening.
