Greenway for a Day is Back
The unique event, Greenway for a Day is back! This time, the event first put in place by Sligo Greenway Co-op, will take place at Curry in Co Sligo. The Co-op is the main lobby group working on having the disused railway running between Collooney and Bellaghy (Charlestown) made into a greenway for walkers and cyclists. This event is being organised in association with Curry/Moylough Community Playground Group. The event takes place on Sunday 5th June next between 3pm and 5pm.

Last spring the Greenway for a Day event was run at Carrowmore near Lavagh and attracted up to 500 local people all of whom enjoyed the pleasure of walking and cycling on a virtual greenway created on a road adjacent to the disused railway. Peadar Conway of Sligo Greenway Co-op said “These events are put in place to highlight the need and showcase the benefits of a greenway for County Sligo. When the greenway is eventually created it will be a great local amenity, a source of employment and of course, a great tourist attraction.”

Curry/Moylough Community Playground Group is a dynamic local group working tirelessly in an effort to establish a new playground facility in their parish. Both groups share the common ground of rural development and providing facilities within the community of South Sligo. The up-coming Greenway for a Day event coincides with two major activities for each of the community groups; a drive by the Co-op to increase membership and a novel Rock n’Roll Bingo fundraising event organised by the playground committee (also Sunday 5th June at 9pm in the Yeats County Inn, Curry). A Teddybear’s Picnic is also being organised by the playground committee in the aftermath of the greenway walk at 4.30pm.

Greenway for a Day will follow a two mile stretch of road just off the N17 at Curry and will start and finish at the Yeats County Inn Hotel in the village. Local hotelier and founder member of the Co-op, Michael O’Hara said “The route will show those who come to enjoy the event the many benefits of a greenways facility; combining safety and pleasure for local families, boosting physical and mental health, helping employment and increasing tourist potential to the area.”
