I'm taking up Judo twice a week next month and was wondering what brand of Gi to buy? I know in BJJ that the difference in good quality and bad quality Gis is pretty high and a crap brand can shrink considerably. Is this the same for Judo? My budget is around €80 if that makes a difference, same price I paid for a Tatami BJJ Gi

Ring Alan Martin @ 085 235 6462 and talk to Alan about your requirement.

And yes there's a massive difference between Judogi, probably more so than a BJJ gi.

If you're certain you're going to stick at the Judo I'd increase my budget to about €130 and go for a Fighing Films 'Black Label' gi (white will be about a tenner cheaper than the white).

But in reality you'd get away with a cheaper Danrho at about €50 until you start competing.

Call Alan would be my best advice.

Cheers Maurice Gentle Padding, my plan is to stick with Judo for as long as I can anyway so might invest in the Fighting Films Gi. BJJ is the best stress relief i've found yet and hoping that Judo will help add to that. I also did Judo back in college and loved it before exams and part-time lecturing completely took over, can still do a solid Uchi Mata when drilling BJJ with my brother at home :D.

Well if you think you'll be around for awhile, and esp if you think you're going to compete well then investing in a Fighting Films 'Black Label' is worth every penny.

They're a great gi.. Initially it might feel a little stiff and heavy for club training, esp in the summer but you'll get used to that.

I also use a cheap Danhro suit which I bought off Alan, it cost about €50. Its very light, has elasticated pants (waist, no draw string).. They're a good club/training suit too and won't break the bank but in competition you'll be eaten alive in it as its so light and easily gripped.
