Windows 7 Cumulative Update 'SP2' - Finally!

Hi all,

Just a heads up for those who aren't aware - Microsoft finally went about releasing a post SP1 rollup of updates for Windows 7. It's not quite SP2 but as good as.

It contains all updates from SP1 to April 2016.

Problem is that you can only download it through Internet Explorer as it's only on the MS update catalogue.

Link Here - make sure to choose 32 or 64 bit.

Might have already been mentioned but thought it was worth posting for anyone doing a clean install.

I just tested this on a clean install of Windows 7 x64 ultimate(SP1) and when I tried to install this it told me "This update is not applicable to your computer."
I downloaded the x64 file so not sure what's going on here. Maybe it needs some post SP1 updates applied prior to installing?

I have the same thing on a test VM with some but not all updates, and a pretty fresh install that has almost no updates (because Windows Update won't run properly). I think the Windows 7 update service has been kinda borked for a few months and I suspect there's not going to be much effort put into fixing it

Got the same error on x64, not sure of the updateness of it as I only use it for Folding@Home

For every install of 7 in the last year or so I've done I had to install these 3 updates before windows update would work, give them a try.

You need to install KB3020369 as a prerequisite, have you done that?

Nope, just tried it on a clean install of SP1.
A prerequisite makes no sense for a post SP1 rollup in my opinion.

To apply this update, you must install the April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 (KB3020369).

Thanks for this, I installed them last night on one of the laptops I had been having this problem with and it's now churning its way through the 200+ updates that Windows Update can finally see and install.

I did that today on 1 laptop, then the new SP2, all worked. I then found an issue with a process using 50% CPU (i.e. 1 core) named mscorsvw.exe, something to do with .NET. Another process of the same image also running at 0% CPU had to be stopped before the CPU hog. Had a similar hog issue with a svchost process recently, connected with updating.

To solve that, run the following two:

"C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ngen.exe" executequeueditems

"C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\ngen.exe" executequeueditems

That will force .NET to do what it needs to do and you won't see it again to such an extent.
