Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I figured I'd do a match thread.

One of the final games we play before the Euros, and we face a Dutch side that won't be going to France but which did manage a 2-1 away win over a decent England side back in March. Who wins tonight?

    Teams are in:
Ireland: Randolph; Coleman, O’Shea (capt), Duffy, Brady; Whelan, Quinn, Arter, Walters; McGoldrick, Long.

Subs: Given, Rogers, O’Kane, R Keogh, McGeady, Keane, McClean, Christie, Ward, Hoolahan, Murphy, O’Dowda, Hendrick, Gibson.

Netherlands: Cillessen; Veltman, Bruma, Van Dijk; Willems; Bazoer, Wilnaldum, Strootman; Promes, Janssen, Memphis.

I'm glad to see the likes of Arter, Quinn and McGoldrick get an opportunity to impress. It will be interesting to see if anyone earns a late spot in the Euros squad.

    Does the result matter tonight?

    Does the result matter tonight?

If we win, people will say it's a huge win in the run up to the Euros, especially over The Netherlands.

If we lose/draw people will say it was only a run around for the players and will want to shrug it off, as would management.

I'd be leaning more on the side of yes it is important to give it a good go anyway. Any win is a good win for confidence I think, no matter who the opponents.

Ireland would need to be putting on a good show tonight. Even though they didn't qualify, the Netherlands are a side with that bit of quality and fluidity in their national style, and Ireland will be playing three slick enough outfits in the Euros, so a good result here will inspire confidence for the games to come.

Arter, McGoldrick and Quinn is an interesting midfield line up.

Would like Duffy to really stake a claim in the centre of the defence.

what parish is Arter from? I hear he played a bit of hurling before taking up the soccer

I don't see a defeat tonight being the end of the world but a hammering wouldn't do our confidence any good. The last time the two sides met was a friendly ten years ago in Dublin which the Dutch won 4-0. I'd say a drubbing like that is highly unlikely though considering they aren't any where near as good these days and I'd say we're better than we were a decade ago.

No exaggeration to say Seedorf could still be perfectly useful for the Dutch in this game such is the pace it's being played at.

McGoldrick doesn't look sharp enough. He hasn't had a lot of football the past few months.

God almighty our players are so rigid. Nobody running by players to create space for players on the ball. Ridiculous.

    Yesssss!!!!

That was great from O'Shea though. Little bit of movement caused havoc.

Not too sure why McGoldrick is playing in midfield but he's doing well to be fair to him. Good to see a midfield that's comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Current day Edgar Davids, sans glasses, would get a game in this Dutch team.

Very poor crossing from Coleman and now from Walters. From good positions too. Good to be 1 up all the same.

Netherlands need to get much better at the football in order to qualify for major tournaments

8 - The Dutch national team have failed to keep a clean sheet in eight consecutive games, their longest sequence since 1962 (10). Breached.

2 - The Dutch national team only had two touches in the opposition box in the first half v Ireland. Blunt.

They look very vulnerable when crosses come in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,394 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Either Ireland are brilliant at set-pieces or the Dutch are absolutely crap at defending them. Look like scoring at almost every one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

Dick Advocaat on the bench for Holland, bring him on ta fúck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,240 ✭✭✭✭briany

First 55 minutes, Ireland have looked steady, I thought. I'm gonna try and be positive and say that I don't think it's because the Dutch are so bad at defending set pieces. I'd like to think Ireland have a bit of nous to set pieces at the moment.

If Ireland can carry decent form into the Euros, I don't think I'll be so tightly clenched watching the matches.

The Netherlands are a total shambles. Hard to take anything from this in my opinion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,200 ✭✭✭superfurry1

This Dutch team are playing exactly as United were when they were going through their worst spell horrible to watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

The Dutch haven't shown much but it's still only 1-0. It would be a shame if we didn't go on to win this.
