If you're still in contract, you'll have to pay the balance or else see it out. If you are on a rolling 30-day plan, you can port over to Lyca. Lyca will do all that for you.

It's a rolling 30 day plan. I've no idea what you mean by port it over to Lyca though... I suppose I'm wondering if I have to get my phone unlocked and who does that?

Try a sim from another network in the phone. If its locked and you got the phone from your current provider they should give you an unlock code free depending on how much you have spent topping up (its usually €100 or over) if not e bay is good for unlock codes, price will depend on phone

To be honest, if you don't know what any of those things are (and not bothered with looking them up) then I wouldn't recommend this undertaking for you - it won't go smoothly.

Just notice today that lyca allows top up via pay pal.Just be careful and read small print as it says on paypal website that its going to be recurrent charge via paypal(every 30 days) untill you cancel that on your pay pal account.

That's only if you select auto topup option. I top up both of my lads acc via Paypal and I've never had it done automatically as I didn't select the auto top up option.

I think you are right, it is a short term offer, but it seems to apply to who is already on the Ireland Plus deal - my renew date was today and I got it.

Just to let ye know, the free roaming doesn't apply for all of Spain, e.g the Canary Islands, as my dad was on this plan and he ended up spending 30 euro worth of credit when he thought it was free.

I just bought a Lycamobile SIM in a convenience store for 99c to get started. Seemed easier and quicker.

I know you answered me already, but after talking to my current provider and trying to cancel my service, I was more confused than ever because they really gave me the runaround....

So, in short, I registered on the website for a SIM, they confirmed the SIM had been shipped, got a further mail saying "now that you've received your SIM" (but I haven't, yet) so just going to see if I can buy one in a local shop tomorrow instead.

Are you the guy who told me not to bother with this because I don't know what the hell "port" means? I still don't!

I really hope that I don't get stung for the rest of this month plus another month from my current provider though (on billpay but out of contract) if they reckon I have to give them 30 days notice....

I have looked into it and read a fair bit of this thread and the Lyca website itself. I've looked at that link and it seems easy enough. Should be good to go now. Sorry I don't know what the technical terms are, maybe if you had said them in layman's terms I'd have copped it long ago. Obviously, nobody ever had to explain to you what porting is, you've known it since birth...

I was steering you away from this because "porting" has been mentioned numerous times in this thread, not just by me, and you've not looked it up or asked what it was. Switching to Lyca, purely online, isn't as straightforward as it should be. I had issues with an account password reset that needed a little thinking outside the box solution to get around and others have had, for example, data configuration issues with their phones which they had to sort out themselves.

If the meaning of "porting" is throwing you, this is only the entrance to the rabbit hole now...

If it helps, i worked in IT and telecoms for several years (20+) and only got to know what porting was after 'national roaming' was introduced. In fact, porting is a nickname, the correct name is mobile number portability, and usually called full number portability (prefix like 085, 086 also moves), but i still needed an explanation of the details at the time.

I am in favour of simplifying language as much as possible to make technology accessible to all, as described here "Cut the Code: Why Speaking In Technical Jargon Is Not Making You Look Smarter". I hope this helps end this discussion because it is not very relevant.

Thank you Zynks, that was a very helpful post and your second paragraph is the point I was trying (but failing miserably) to make. If things are explained in laymans terms, I get them. I don't understand or know what all the technical terms are, neither do a lot of people.

Anyway, sure with a free SIM and a a tenner for the first month, I don't have anything to lose if it doesn't work - I can always use the phone again and try another provider....

Just a reminder for people who don't call or SMS a lot but whatsapp and use data;

I put €5 via paypal (non recurring) on my phone.
This gives me 10Gb (*147#) & 25 Irish landline/mobile calls, and 6 SMS out of my bonus €1 credit with 10c over!!

when this is finished after a couple of weeks, I can put on another €5 for the same again, that will get me till end of month.

I am still left with €10 on my account if I stayed at less than 50 mins and 13 SMS.

The following month I can buy the €9 300mins,300sms&1Gb,

Sometimes I will just keep doing the €5 topup and keep the credit for buying roaming addon for my hols

Which plan is that? I have both of my lads on lyca and I top them up by €5 every month for the 10gb of data, beside a couple of calls to me, they mainly use whatsapp and viber, and their Mam is on lyca so they get those calls and texts for free, however, they dont get to keep their credit thou, the calls to me are always taken from their €6.

@Bigboss1986 : dont know about Europe PLUS but with the International Red bundle roaming calls do not come out of the bundle ( i.e. they are charged for as made ), also the data is National ( rather than international ).

Roaming calls : Its seems that free roaming is included with only some national bundles ( but who knows ! )

I spoke to CS on this issue today, it seems my lads were actually getting this 25mins also, however the free minutes with these top up only last the calendar month and not the duration of the 30 days top up as with the data that also comes with the top-ups. So because I was topping my lads up around the 25th of each month they were only getting the benefit of these calls for a couple of days.

So realistically you'd want to be topping up around the 1-3rd of the months so as you could get the full benefit of the 25mins. Neither of my lads would use much more that 25 mins a month anyway.

Is there a tethering restriction? I just tried switching on the hotspot on my wife's iphone and I was able to connect to it no bother. Speeds weren't great, but still worked fine thou.

Was it any better when a speed test was done on the phone while not tethering? I think the speeds are about correct. Lyca speeds are generally poor.
