Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Potential buyer. A few questions

    Hey guys,
So after getting a ridiculous renewal quote of over 2,5k for my 2001 mondeo I decided to get rid of the car altogether. I don't drive a lot anyway, the occasional trip once or twice a week to nearby town etc.
I've always wanted a bike, ever since I was a kid I dreamt of owning a dirt bike or a quad. Now I'm a little older, I don't have a car and no other real expenses (still living with parents) and thought about getting a road bike that looks alright and is cheap to keep/insure.

I do have several questions though:

I had an accident in the car (reason for ridiculous renewal) last year that is still on-going since the other car involved made an injury claim (guaranteed false, it was a fender bender at a parking lot) that will probably keep dragging on for months if not longer...
    Anyway, it was my fault.
    - Would this have an impact on my bike insurance quote or are car/bikes completely separate when it comes to insurance?

    - Also I have 2 penalty points for going 8km/h (!) over the speed limit. I'm assuming this might also affect my total premium?

    - Would it be best to go straight for A cat. learner permit if I'm 25? Would it make a difference for the insurance what cat. license I have even if I intend to start off with a <125cc bike?

I'm 25, male with now 1 year of NCB (had step-back protection so didn't loose all of my 5 years...) earned on my car.
    No A license yet.

I've thrown an edit into the other thread and it created this new one oO.
Please delete either one as there's no need for 2 exactly same threads.

Definitely go for the A license then get a small bike so they will insure you. You will have to tell them you have an open insurance claim i'd say.

Your NCB won't count for the bike

Most companies ignore the first few penalty points. Go onto liberty insurance and you can get an online quote. They're not as cheap as they used to be, but it should give you a ballpark figure of what you're going to pay.

Yes your accident in the car will affect the quote, in fact until the claim is settled its highly unlikely any insurer will touch you.

Penalty points wont affect you but need to be mentioned

Your no claims bonus in a car isnt relevant at all for a bike.

So once again the Insurance industry has it both ways, may not qoute you because you have had a claim, but if they do they won't give you your NCB. f**king highway robbers

Why would a no claims bonus earned in a car have any relevance to your ability to drive a motorcycle?
Just because you havent crashed a car doesnt mean you wont crash a bike. Bikes are alot more easy to be reckless on than a car.

Also thats standard policy, you are involved in a legal process, once that is sorted they will quote you.

    Thanks for the answers.
I had a look at liberty insurance but keep getting the "we can't offer you a quote at this time" no matter what bike I try and it seems to make no difference if I mention the penalty points/claim at all. Might have to give them a call, but I guess that will have to wait until my claim is sorted.

It's pretty dumb the way it is set up, because I can't go to any other insurance company to get cover. I'm either stuck with Axa for the ridiculous renewal or have no own transport. For god knows how long. Heard injury claims can take years.....

what sticks in my graw, is if insurance companies consider motorcycles and cars to be so different as to require separate NCBs, how they can then turnaround and then use a claim against a car policy effect your bike policy?

You have to factor in cost for gear.
Also bike tyres are more expensive and don't last anywhere as long as car tyres.
