I admire you ladies. After last year's nice-but-VERY solo-holiday, (also very expensive!!) I firmly decided that this year I wasn't going anywhere, so I didn't. I really wish I still had the 'zaz' to go by myself, but I just don't. I know I'm missing out, I know there's nothing stopping me, I know I could literally go ANYWHERE....but I just can't face it.

Those of you who are adventuring solo, make a few memories for me too :)

I always come back in a better frame of mind than I went.

As someone said to me....what are you going to do? Sit at home on your own knitting?

I always go as a solo within a group, so I dont feel too isolated and there is ALWAYS someone in the same boat!

This year, apart from my massive American Road trip, I did a stretch of the Camino! The Group I met on the Camino were so lovely .....we are going again as a Group. We so gelled.

next year I am thinking, 1 x Camino Trip, and thinking somewhere like Costa Rica? Also, I did a fab Carribean Solo Trip the year before (it was very expensive) but now with STG at a low, it is more affordable (thats my excuse for going anyway!!!)

I find once I went once, I want to keep going!

Dubrovnik is fabulous, great for a short break.

I went to Lisbon by myself for 4-5 days in 2007, was a bit apprehensive but was one of the best things I ever did. Really enjoyed it :p

I spent my 20s waiting for someone to come with me. It never happened.

My 30s and I'm not waiting for anyone. I have had the best holidays in the past few years. Reading all this and i want to go again.

Had a spare week off, so booked the Canaries for December.

That's my 3rd Holiday (alone) this year!

    Looking forward to more!

Ooh! How long are you coming for?
Any places you really want to visit?
    Are you looking for recommendations?

I'm arriving on a Saturday morning and leaving the following Saturday in the afternoon. Coming into Dublin and have a hotel booked there for the week. It will be in July, so I have plenty of time to figure out what I want to do.

I like getting to know a place more deeply than 2 days, so I'm thinking I want to stay in Dublin for most of the trip. I love museums and history and I'm very interested in capital cities, so that'll be a focus for me. But I also love countryside and beautiful scenery, so a day trip or two isn't out of the question. I'm not so much into tourist traps, so things like the Blarney stone aren't a big draw for me. I also don't drink, so I won't be partaking in a Guinness tour or anything like that.

I guess I would ask what do you think a tourist should see in Dublin or anywhere in Ireland? I've been on this board for 10 years (oh my god) now and know the basics of Irish history, so hopefully I'm not the stereotypical clueless American coming in. But I feel like I can learn so much more when I'm actually there.

You can feel free to PM me - anyone can! - if this might drag the thread off topic!

metaoblivia If you want a day trip I would recommend Wicklow. Not far from Dublin at all and the scenery is truly beautiful :)

I highly recommend Costa Rica. I did a 3 week trip there last year through a travel company and loved it. It has amazing scenery and wildlife so if you are into that give it some thought. I was with a group so not completely on my own. It's quite an active trip, walking, swimming, zipling, etc so your time is filled with lots of things to do which you can opt of if you want some down time.

Apart from that trip I have travelled on my own lots, sometimes I've joined groups along the way but mostly on my own. I've met lots of single women doing the same thing. If I was to wait for friends to have the time and/or money I wouldn't have got to go in the first place.

If you don't mind your own company for periods of time or pushing yourself out of your comfort zone every now and again then I don't see why solo travel shouldn't be an option. I've had some lovely experiences as a result which I would have missed out on if I was reluctant to travel by myself.
