GFC 16-13 Con. You'll get it right some day.

Good result in fairness, I was hardly saying they were going to get hammered or anything!

You predicted an easy home win for Belvo the week before, the crystal ball might need buffing .
It's a much better league than is perceived by the media and the Munster/Leinster/Connacht/Ulster all my life brigades

Fair enough... Not sure if the second part is a pop at me.

For my sins went and watched Bective v Greystones on Saturday. Very poor game. Greystones near top of 2B but are very poor and Bective worse,

More like a deliberate policy which they plan for amazing how all props are fit again to start the following week. 7 subs should be the norm within Ail 1a & b at the very least makes a joke of developing front rows. They will never improve if they keep going uncontested but they won't change as they train for it during the week as they seem to have great foresight in knowing that they will go to uncontested scrums
Maybe increase subs to 6 or 7 but rotation policy should be kept and having 7 subs wont stop this if its an actual policy of theres as I don't think theyre that stupid as clubs have been and will get penalised for acting the b*****x with front rows and uncontested scrums if a pattern arises.

Was at the Terenure Ucd game and thought it was a brilliant game of rugby. Both teams tried to play good rugby, both scored 4 tries and there was only 7 between them at the end. Much needed win for Terenure but UCD won't be too down hearted considering the amount of good players they had missing, Ross Byrne played a half though so they'll be happy to have him back.

Had an incident at the weekend in a Senior game. Team A got a number of penalties from a scrum on Team B's 22 metre line. On the third penaly the referee yellow carded a prop from Team B. Team B told the referee they did not have a sub prop and referee called for uncontested scrum.
3 or 4 minutes later play came to the other side of the field and there was a knock on. Team B then brought on a sub prop for the player that was yellow carded.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 80 ✭✭Garry123

The scrum is the most misunderstood aspect of the game. I don't know of one ref who played frontrow. Penalties are awarded arbitrarily (it seems so), prop is the only position where your opposite number gets a penalty if he out maneuvers you. The laws around the scrum need to be revisited.

get the irfu to advertise it , insist on 15 mins coverage on against the head and not a measly two mins. more games on facebook/ live streams , get the irfu to give reports , maybe try a double header with a provincial game e.g say trinity v munsters of tarf v garryowen on in the aviva before munster v leinster , try a tv ad campaign

get rte to carry results on six one news, send reporters to matches and give it to national radio stations, try avoid clashing with the pro game,

Trinity don't have any leinster academy players, although they have Jack Kelly who is in the sub academy.

They also have Colm Hogan(wing/full back) who is in the Munster sub academy and has recently been training a couple of days each week with the Munster full squad. He was offered a full academy contract in Munster but has turned it down to continue his studies in Dublin in Trinity.

Both Kelly and Hogan recently captained Leinster and Munster Dev/Academy/under 20 "teams" in the interpros. It wouldnt surprise me if both Leinster and Munster ask these two guys to play in the B and I Cup coming up soon. Both played very well last friday night in Trinitys game against St Marys.

Leinster should be after Hogan, especially as he is based in Dublin and from Mullingar.

Certainly should but wont i bet as they have Keenan and Power and Kelly-IMO Kelly better than both Power and Keenan and he will pass them both out

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 410 ✭✭brockboy02

Yeah Jack Kelly & Jordan Larmour are both better prospects than Jack Power/Hugo Keenan/Terry Kennedy, who all joined the leinster academy this season. However Larmour's biggest problem at the professional level will be his size or lack there of.

I wouldn't rule out Leinster going after Hogan, academy contracts are now only for a year so no gaurantee that Power/Keenan/Kennedy are retained if they aren't performing upto expectations.

Still I'd wager Hogan ends up with Munster. Which is fair enough, as they developed him.

Do you really think clubs will want to play in the Aviva before a big provincial game? Is it really a workable option?
Against the Head is 50 or so minutes long when you take into account ads. There is 4 provincial games to cover first so insisting on 15 minutes of AIL coverage is delusional as it wont happen. Why don't clubs work together and look to stream games.
TV ad campaign? You would be better off using local radio stations and community radio stations and using ads there so you use Live95FM in Limerick, the youth-orientated stations like iRadio, Spin South West, RedFM, Galway Bay FM etc etc

No sub academy only. Trinity only now up to 1A and academy guys will generally be in UCD or more established 1A sides

Why not sure try it and see - dont they play the minor all ireland before the senior one

so insisting on 15 minutes of AIL coverage is delusional as it wont happen. Why

They only show a few mins of pro12 highlights its mostly full of talking so - less talk more club rugby please - or at least talk about the club game a bit more

Good idea to use local stations

That doesn't suit the RTE ideal to have more club rugby and less talk on what RTE think most people are interested in. When Against The Head is 50 or so minutes long and there is 4 provinces to cover and discussion around national game or other areas then the AIL will not and never will get 15 minutes a show.

lost sheep - last season the semi finals didnt even get a mention on against the head -as there was no against the head the following monday - i think the ulster bank league needs better coverage and the irfu need to spearhead this

remember the days in the 90s when sports stadium gave it a whole hour between 5-6pm, and all first division games had reports in papers, mind you crowds were massive then

Talking about the 90s is crazy. The provinces played 3 games a season bar when a touring team came. The club game was where the internationals played regularly. Trying to compare now with then is bonkers. I can remember attending Shannon AIL games in the late 90s and there would nearly be 8-10 current internationals playing a game.
IRFU provide coverage on social media, on their own sources like irishrugby tv. There is coverage in the newspapers. Clubs need to work better with local newspapers. Remember especially in a lot of areas local newspapers fill their pages with 3 match reports of the same game in GAA in many cases. One by the newspapers journalist and clubs will send in their own report in their own notes. Clubs need to be better at getting coverage in local media. They need to contact their local radio stations and get people to send in reports to them.
Clubs and the IRFU together should get in contact with irish tv(sky 191) and see if they will cover games. Ive seen live GAA club games on that channel so no reason it couldn't be used to show live club rugby every week during the season

Some very good ideas there lost sheep
-esp getting clubs to send own reports to papers and contacting local radio
    -and using irish tv
while it aint available to everyone it a great idea and big improvement, maybe consider tg4 also
-online streaming of games good idea too

REmember munsters playing shannon in cup final in 1999 - the whole shannon pack was contracted
    front row bull, mcdermott, marcus
    second row gallimh langford
    back row halvey foley quinlan
    scrum half stringer

remember that Shannon team of that era well. When Shannon played their AIL games in Clanwilliam in Tipp town because of work in Thomond Park I went to a lot of games and I still have a signed programme from that season. Got virtually all that packs autographs

Clubs can do a lot of things better themselves. What do clubs do to entice people to attend games?

when munster play tarf earlier this year they had a family fun day with face painting and mini games at half time, when munsters played lansdowne last game of season an adult who went with a kid in a munsters jersey got in for half price.

maybe hand out flyers or sending fixture details to local businesses and to parent who bring kids to mini/underage,

Covered terracing might help (ok it may not be affordable or practical for some clubs) but if nenagh and clonmel can do it why not others,

try a double header with a provincial game - if it dont work ..then dont do it anymore,

Club rugby doesn't seem to appeal to the neutral supporter. The non member supporter gravitated to the provinces a long time ago. The league needs the media to give it some exposure, it also needs the non member supporter to go to games especially if / when their province are playing away.

Our club posts fixtures and events on the website, twitter, and facebook. It also posts on clubify and by SMS and email. It offers pre match lunch with wine for 25, entry on it's own is 10. Clubs have little or no money for advertising or marketing.

What revenue do you give clubs if doing a double header with a provincial game? Most clubs I know, home one and few others, have posters in their town/area and then heavily use their local paper and social media. Still doesn't help get crowds and crowds are only very big when its a local team in opposition.

--- give them a cut off the gate equivalent to what a normal home game would be

worth a try, maybe other posters have better ideas ,
local paper here Limerick Leader give the league great coverage in fairness

anybody know if theres a live stream game on the weekend

Here we go again...Time to get a lot of predictions wrong again if the last few weeks are anything to go by

Old Belvedere v Terenure - Think Terenure may well turn over Belvo in this one

Dublin University v Young Munster - Would be an incredible start for Trinity if they can get the points here but going to favour Munsters

Clontarf v Garryowen - Clontarf to get back on track

Cork Constitution v Lansdowne - Con desperately need a win to kick start their season. Expecting a very tough physical game as always

UCD v St Mary's College - UCD have underpeformed in the last couple of weeks and this is the week to get them with a Leinster A fixture. Going for Marys to win this one.

Galwegians v U.L. Bohs - UL Bohs to keep their winning streak going

Ballymena v Dolphin - Ballymena will want to make up for last weeks defeat to UCC

Buccaneers v UCC - Buccaneers seem to be gaining some momentum and expect that to continue

Old Wesley v Ballynahinch - Another crunch match for both teams. Think Old Wesley will shade it

Shannon v Naas - Naas look good enough to make this an away win

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭Tarf1234

I'll try get at least one right this week. Pretty tough so far.

Old Belvedere v Terenure - Couple of good results for OB so far. I reckon they'll win.

Dublin University v Young Munster - Trinity going well but YM look the team to beat for me so far.

Clontarf v Garryowen - A couple of very disappointing results the last 2 weeks. I think we'll get over them and win.

Cork Constitution v Lansdowne - Con need this one and think they'll do it. Lansdowne may have seen the last of Dooley for a while and Sexton gone so scrum will not be as impressive.

UCD v St Mary's College - Great time to get UCD if Marys turn up they should win.

Galwegians v U.L. Bohs - Agree, think Bohs look like they'll be the team to beat this year

Ballymena v Dolphin - Home advantage to take it for Ballymena

Buccaneers v UCC - Buccaneers to squeeze it and put UCC under a bit of early season pressure

Old Wesley v Ballynahinch - Old Wesley are very good at home but think Hinch will steal this one. They really should be looking to be in the top 2 for the rest of the season.

Shannon v Naas - It's such a shame to see one of the countries great clubs struggling so badly. Naas to win.
