I work for a huge multi-national IT company. Lots of people on my team go back to their home country for a few weeks and 'hot desk' i.e they essentially do their regular Dublin duty but sitting in the office in China etc.

I could get away with 2-3 weeks hot desking with the U.S team in North Carolina, but what if I wanted to stay longer?

I know the VWP is 3 months max, isnt it?. I would be doing my regular job and getting paid by my Irish division of my company in to my Irish bank etc.

What visa could allow me to do this for say up to 1 year if not more?

You cannot do "work" on the VWP at all. You can attend business meetings and conferences and such, but you cannot actually do your actual work in the way you describe for "hot desking". You will need to have your company apply for a visa for you if you do not already have permission to work in the US. Depending on your job title, you may qualify for an L visa; otherwise rely on your employer to manage this in their usual way. Do not go it alone. Your "huge multinational" likely will have a special priority status that will ease the way for you.

Best of check with a Visa specialist but I suspect that you won't get a visa for this without your company sponsoring it.

You can apply for an L1- intracompany transfer visa. It's apparently fairly straightforward as long as you've been with your company for over a year.

I'm thought that was for managerial level employee's.

Where are you getting that info from? Thanks

Be aware that if you try to game the system, you could jeopardise the priority status your multinational likely has with US Immigration. My old employer had to resolve such an issue, about which I am saying no more other than that I am thankful it didn't involve me.

The L-1 visa has two subcategories: L-1A for executives and managers, and L-1B for workers with specialized knowledge. L-1A status is valid for up to 7 years, L-1B for 5. Both are very straight forward and you can get them pretty quickly. The one major difference apart from the length of status is the move from L-1A to Greencard is a lot quicker than the move from L1-B to Greencard as it doesn't require a PERM.
