Deservedly so. Heysel was absolutely disgusting. Fathers watching their sons being knocked out and trampled, begging to be left alone while being crushed against a wall as Liverpool fans screamed and threw bottles. One of the darkest days in football IMO

Not a million miles from what happened in Marseille then. Thankfully, it being a more modern stadium, fans were able to flee much easier and the outcome nowhere near as tragic.

2018 is a 'European' allocated tournament....

However, FIFA have repeatedly committed to both hosts, so there will be no change.

Yep, and give it to England. They have the infrastructure.

And the cynic in me suggests that's why England didn't get awarded it.

No new stadiums, means no major construction projects which means fewer Brown envelopes...

Man that Elmer hangs on to things for a long time!

Because of Heysel, English clubs were banned from Europan competition. It is completely appropriate that Russia is threatened with a very similar sanction.

It's not really similar though. In Heysel 39 people were killed and over 600 people seriously injured.

Yes, because a wall collapsed on fans fleeing the charging English supporters.

Here, no wall collapsed. Thankfully. But the Russian supporters shouldn't get any credit for that

Part of me wants to see Russia and Ukraine meet as the Russians won't be able to help themselves.

Dying to see if UEFA would go through without their threat

    Is Russia?

    Qatar weren't 'likeable' either.

That is, until Sarkozy bent the ear of Platinni & swayed UEFA's votes towards the desert kingdom.....

A few months later Qatar entirely coincidentally announced a multi-billion euro deal with French jet fighter manufacturer Dassault.

.... but that's for another thread.

The singing (or should I say grunting) of "Rule Britannia" in a stadium should result in an immediate ban!!

Only if we can expel Ireland when they sing the fields of Athenry.

Pretty obvious who's instigated that. Hopefully there won't be an issue between the Welsh and English anyway.

If they get kicked out of the Euros FIFA has to consider taking the WC off them.

They never would this close to it.

Take it off them and give it to England. Nor that would be hilarious!

The Irish are lucky we are nowhere near these thugs.

UEFA should be sued by people who got hurt in the stadium. They have an obligation to protect people from these savages. It's when they are hit financially, that's when they will show respect to fans.

England and Wales fans throwing glass bottles there at two Russians it seems. Hopefully UEFA have a close look at that the tournament can do without any more thug behaviour from their fans.

16 seconds in man nearly get's pint glass in the face. Disgraceful behaviour.

French police are totally inept. Standing around like spectators. Are they afraid? Maybe. But looking at these clips, it's easy to see how ISIS are running rings around them.

If the police are afraid to take a fight to thugs, others have to.

France shouldn't be awarded a tournament again. They can't manage it.

I'm here for balance. The mantra from English media the last few days is that it's been all Russians fault, it hasn't by a long shot. Media in mainland Europe has had a more balanced view of what's going on with the English supporters. If you don't mind i'm entitled to a point of view, if you don't mind like.

I'd say very much afraid take your average English common garden thug usually on the beer all day can throw a dig more likely fall over when pushed by police,
    Vs
Russian Ultras big likely ex military ,trained in hand to hand ,sober ,armed with telescopic batons act in large organised groups .

If your a local cop who would you rather try to apprehend

To punish a sports team, no, a whole country, because of the bad behaviour of a few hooligans? Not only grossly unfair, but actually highlighting the incompetence of the French authorities to control a crowd. Punish the hooligans, not anybody else!

Blame the authorities for scumbags' behaviour ? That is stunning!

And completely at odds with your last sentence.

Dunno, it's pretty subtle the way he makes his point. It's definitely something to do with the English, not sure what. I think by the end of the tournament, we will conclusively be able to tell.

Disgraceful, the "f**k off Russia" chant is incitement to violence.
It says England and Wales fans but I would think most Welsh fans have the sense to avoid the English like the plague.
    Iceland goal !!:D

There's no way a World Cup should be held it Russia. Even ignoring their invasion and annexation of part of Ukraine, ongoing intimidation and provocation of neighbouring states, state sponsored terrorism, corruption, poltical assasinations, homophobic and racist laws, even ignoring the detestable nature of the current poltical regime in Russia they're CHEATS in sport. They have been systematicly doping for years and what went on the Socchi winter games should be the final proof that they can't be allowed host any major sporting event.

FIFA is a broken organisation and the issue of Russia hosting a corrupt World Cup is a perfect opportunity for the football associations of law abiding civilised countries to break away and form a new clean governing body for World football.

All the talk a few weeks ago was potential problems between England and Wales (am I right in thinking that it was the only game with an embargo on alcohol sales announced a few weeks ago?), the issues with England and Russia were well known and there's no love lost between the Slovaks and their former Soviet overlords as well. It simply beggars belief that UEFA have stuck all four sets of fans in the same town this week.

In fact, they'd be more likely to throw England out!

The political side of your argument is piss weak. The west have made a concerted effort to surround Russia and place missiles within minutes of major Russian metropolitan areas. They basically backstabbed Russia and it's taken strong leadership from Putin to halt the American lead push. Also do you really want to bring invasions into it, should the world cup be given to England or America.

That's why only a complete moron would be defending the Russians.

They were seen charging at innocent supporters in the stadium. No ifs, no buts, and no maybes.

Outside, it's harder to tell who caused it. UEFA aren't responsible for outside, hence their warning to England was as stupid as it gets.

Fan safety should be everyone's concern, regardless of where they are from.
