What car and style of driving?

It seems very low. Is there a caliper sticking?

I know I was getting close to 80,000 miles (yes, miles) or so on my 2003 Avensis on genuine Toyota pads but granted there was a lot of pretty decent long runs / motorway driving included in that.

Check sliding pins, especially if uneven wear.

Is the car automatic? Would put more wear if it was.

There saying now it's the discs that have caused the wear

    That is technically correct.

but when i got the car serviced in february they put on brake pads in front would they not have noticed the Discs then ?

The discs may have been fine at the time and worn more since.
Without seeing the pads it's hard to say, but if they wear evenly (both sides are equally worn then it's probably not a major concern.

Maybe take car to a second mechanic and get their opinion.

Unless the discs were either scored or warped at the time of fitting the new pads, they shouldn't have caused accelerated pad wear.

I'd be looking at sticking calipers in the absence of the above and these are rare in the avensis.
