Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Andy Mitten on twitter saying it was scuffles between rival Croatian ultras. What utter morons.

no real need to be threatening to kick them out. It was clearly infighting which is very different to Marseille.

I dunno if that's much of a defence, in that fighting can cause injury and panic even if not between opposing fans.

The flare incident is the more serious I'd imagine, not the fighting

Explosions don't have to touch you to hurt you. Concussion from a near explosion can be pretty bad.

I'm aware of that. It was a firecracker not a bomb and from the close up he will be fine.

If Ireland drew with Belgium, we would move up over Romania, no?

Your friend knows much more than me being that he's Croatian, but what's the motives behind wanting your country kicked out?

Ah, i doubt he has any insider info, probably just venting.
He feels it might have something to do with coastal supporters (maybe Torcida Split) disliking Davor Šuker, and also Dynamo Zagreb's director Zdravko Mamić's influence in the national team selection.

    From that wiki:
Torcida member often use flares, smoke flares and other pyrotechnics to heat up the atmosphere on the stadium.
    Checks out :p

the flares on the pitch were clearly a co-ordinated protest. A few pictures show a banner of some sort too.

What might be a problem is the firecracker and what happened when someone went to pick it up with players and the referee nearby.

Slaven Bilic on ITV giving the background to this - basically an internal power struggle between Zagreb and Split supporters.

Done on purpose by a section of the Croatian fans, in order to get the team punished or kicked out, to hurt their FA who they see as immensely corrupt (probably true).

Won't do a thing though, the FA will only get stronger, more punishments for fans, more security,...

What the **** are the police exactly doing? Riot police standing watching on as a Croatian player pleads with them to go up and intervene.

The organisation and security at this tournament has been shocking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,758 ✭✭✭RedemptionZ

Also on the security, most of these fans that cause look like the kind of people you don't want to run into in a dark alley. And that goes for every country. If you see a group of them entering, surely they should get a bit more attention

Word is one of the security members knew and let them in with flares.

Its hardly surprising drugs are smuggled into ireland and every country everyday without a problem, a few flares are easy

Probably not a good idea, 100 police surrounded by 10,000 fans.

This Ultra culture is a joke

You got to seriously question the competence of the French FA for allowing this kind of stuff into the stadium

Paging all YBIG in France. For your sound deed of the day, help escort one of these men to the nearest Saint-Etienne police station for questioning.

Apparently, these are statuses from people identified as members of the ultra made in the lead up and during the game, making reference to locations of flares and things like that.

Will be interesting to see if anything should come of it! :o

“Maybe it would be best if we don’t play at all,” said Ivan Perisic, who scored the opening goal for Croatia. “Maybe that would actually be better in case these things are going to happen every time we play.”

Reading more into it you'd have to feel sorry for the Croatian team. The FA's in every country have to work harder to stop these guys from travelling. Anybody involved in football violence should have their passports revoked permanently.

Agree, not fair on the players and the majority of fans that Croatia could possibly be banned because of these thugs.

Riot police will wait for orders from their commanding officer, not a footballer

The FA's in every country have to work harder to stop these guys from travelling. Anybody involved in football violence should have their passports revoked permanently.

That's an absolutely ridiculous suggestion. One single offence and you never get to leave the country again? There's no automatic permanent suspension of travel imposed on those who have served time for far more serious offences such as rape and homicide. But commit one offence related to football - which can be something as minor as going onto the pitch during a celebration, for which the penalty is only a fine (no jail time) - and you can never get a passport again?

I'm all for tackling crowd disorder. But c'mon, a bit of perspective here. Let the punishment fit the crime. And don't be treating football fans differently - if it's violence, it's violence. Whether it's on the street on a normal night out or violence sparked by a hostile protest or near a football stadium. If it's the same crime that causes the same damage, give the people the same punishment.

Thankfully, such nonsense draconian suggestions are likely unconstitutional in a lot of countries and against EU law, so they'll never see the light of day.
