Arsenals players have so badly let down Wenger. Yet again. He should leave because his players don't deserve him.

Gutless players. Typical Arsenal v a big team. They'll never win a CL under Wenger (probably won't be around many more years most likely anyway).

Happy to get to the CL.

I love the arsenal collapse every year. Very therapeutic

Hard to judge bayern based on that, did what they had to against the weakest side mentally in the knockout stage.

Id love him but they wont sell to an English side. If they lose him and ozil theyll struggle badly because they wont replace them.

Taking all the blame off Wenger is silly given how long he's been at the club and how often and spectacularly they've failed since 2004.

Good chance the intended meaning of the headline is more subtle and nuanced than your simple direct translation.

No it's not, that paper it's always looking for excuses for barcas losses - it's usually the other team didn't play football, but couldn´t exactly say that when PSG played them off the park and should've won 11-0...

This will be the 6th. Last time they went through was 2010 against Porto I think.

Christ; Arsenal were poor. But you won't catch me crowing about it; we've got to face Monaco next week, who are flying this season.

He said no cover for Kos, whos a real leader and it wasnt good enough for the competition. Bringing on Gabriel isnt good enough cover and that they fell apart all too easily.

    Paraphrasing though.

Xhaka is an awful player. 35m for a lad that does nothing but consistently foul? Himself.and mustafi have been horrible big money signings that haven't added anything to the team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,868 ✭✭✭Andersonisgod

Way too much talk on both RTE and BT about lack of character, lack of fight and lack of leaders. All of that might be true but neither channel has pinpointed just how woeful Arsenal are tactically, particularly when they get shown up by the big teams.

Sadlier has mentioned Wenger in fairness and the buck has to stop with Wenger, IMO.

He has to be fair, though I would still say he's talking about Wenger in the sense of leadership ect. Nobody talking about the ridiculously disjointed pressing, the massive spaces they always leave open between the lines, their susceptibility to the counter attack, their total failure to be able to build up their play without playing themselves into trouble. Such basic defensive mishaps. All those things are, and always have been, as important, if not more important, than the leadership stuff.

    This.

Some very ordinary players at Arsenal. Take sanchez out of it and how many would make the other top 6 teams automatically. Kochelney? (all bar Chelsea) Ozil? (if he had his head right). Nobody else is top bracket, would be decent squad players at the top level but many would fit in grand at Stoke or Everton and not stand out IMHO.

Sooooo Luis Enrique to Arsenal, Wenger to Barcelona then? :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭The Golden Miller

I was expecting Arsenal to be up for that game, but that was just pathetic. Glad they got hammered after seeing their attitude. Made Bayern look like world beaters. Completely inept

As for the other game, it seemed once Napoli got a goal they were content to sit back without having much ambition to push their players forward when they did have the ball. 2-1 would probably have been a fairer result though. Hard to see how the second leg will go. Napoli obviously wanted to take this back to Naples with an away goal and bring the game to Madrid on home soil in a hostile stadium, but shipping 3 goals now makes it very difficult. They will dominate the game and maybe score a few, but Madrid will be happy to sit back and will feel confident about getting a goal on the break

Once again, when a goal isn't put at Ronaldo's feet, he's shown to be completely out of his dept at this level. A passenger watching the game go by

Might as well. Like for like basically. Can't hide how bitter I am that La Masia product Thiago Alcantara is playing a stormer in the knockout round of the CL while Barça labour with Andre Gomes starting in midfield.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,507 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

I think what encapsulates the lack of leadership currently in Arsenal's squad is the fact that Kieran Gibbs took the armband when Kosc went off. I mean he struggles to get a consistent run in the team, is bang average when he does, and his onfield demeanour doesn't exactly scream "leader".

An Adams or a Vieira he certainly ain't.

They have been awful signings though, especially the money involved. Xhaka was brought in to add steel midfield and has done shag all but needlessly gey booked or sent off every second week. Looks miles off the pace any time I've seen him.play.

Gomes is a very good player just questionable whether he can adapt to Barca. Though to be fair to him that often takes players quite some time. Enrique's insistence of playing him though in such vital match was mind boggling. Especially when Rakitic after muscular issues was looking to be in pretty darn good form again.

Hard to say how much of a "stormer" Thiago had, Arsenal basically let them have the freedom of the pitch in many extents.

From a Bayern perspective going forward, their players would genuinely fear playing the likes of Ingolstadt and Darmstadt more than Arsenal at this stage. It's sad that Arsenal have become such an international joke

He's averaging a goal a game this season. He had one really **** game that's all it was, he's been unbelievably good this season apart from last night.

    Agreed.
He seems to have a bad attitude in the away champions league games over the last couple of years though, looks disinterested and lazy.

Wenger said his players got mentally jaded after the second goal.
Mentally jaded, sounds like something you'd say about school kids....

Just look at Arsenal's record in the last 16 round of the Champions league in recent years - the first legs in particular.

2017: Lost 5-1 away to Bayern
2016: Lost 2-0 home to Barcelona
2015: Lost 3-1 home to Monaco
2014: Lost 2-0 home to Bayern
2013: Lost 3-1 home to Bayern
2012: Lost 4-0 away to Milan

What ever happened to a cautious, cagey first leg? They're not giving themselves a chance in the second leg of any of these games.

4 of those losses have come at home which is really embarrassing you at least expect a couple of results in those home game and in the 2 away games they've been beaten by 4 goals in each. It's a truly terrible record.

Us Arsenal fans have known of this record for ages and how we have been beaten by the first leg, was the one thing I wanted today, was to be still in the tie after the first leg. Yet we are called fickle etc, even though we are putting up with the same crap season in season out.

He'll score from 500 yards out every few months and get a red card every few weeks. Other than that you won't hear much about him.

I agree, but sure for an extra £52m or so you can get all that minus the red cards and a couple of dabs thrown in on top.
