Great performance from Ajax so far against Schalke, they're completely dominating the game. The left winger Younes has been outstanding .Overall Ajax are playing some lovely football they've been really good to watch tonight. Great atmosphere in the Amsterdam arena as well

Watching Ajax tonight is both heartwarming to see one of the great european clubs back on the big stage and depressing because it reminds me that they're probably never going to be a champions league contender again.

    2-0 Ajax.

Klaaasen scores after being set up by Patrick Kluiverts son (I feel really old now).

    2-0 Ajax.

    Tell me about it.

Felt the same earlier this year when Diego Simeone and Enrico Chiesa's sons were playing in a game against each other.

Zidane's young lad is in and around Real's first team too

2-0 to Ajax and they could have easily scored another couple had they a little more composure.

Ajax were great to to watch tonight completely dominated the game and I'd really love to see them go through to the next round and win the whole thing now.

delighted for Besiktas especially with the manner of the winner

Lyon, Celta Vigo, Ajax and United should be a great semifinal line up. Celta a dangerous side, but that tie is far from over.

Good to see Ajax still occupied. Need them to drop points in the league to feel a bit more secure.
Just cant see that happening this Sunday. Next week PSV - Ajax though.

Ha, I'm the opposite. Have them in an accy since october to win Eredivisie along with a few random other teams to win their respective championships in the Scotland and the English leagues and United to win Europa and League Cup. It was a "never going to happen " type 5 euro "fun" bet but now it's looking like it could happen and we are talking over 1400 quid! I've a feeling it (the Dutch league) is going to be decided by goal difference at the expense of Ajax :' (

Why do you think i follow Sevilla every step they take? The one vs Real was the European super cup
When Feyenoord took Berghuis on loan i knew they had a great chance to do it. And those odds were just too nice to not break the "never bet on your own team" rule

Ajax's form bit better than Feyenoord last couple of months. Utrecht on Sunday morning could be a very interesting game given the form they have been in. Feyenoord needed 2 injury time goals to rescue a point last time they met so potential banana skin, this game.

Those odds are ridiculous though! when was that put on??

The day they signed Berghuis i put that on. August 6th. The day they had their squad in order.

Feyenoord has been terrible in the last 3 away matches, conceding in all 3 in the first minute more or less.
Home form is grand though with 13 wins, 2 draws 51 scored and 10 conceded
Not so much opponents are the banana skin... pitches are.
Away form not great after the winter break but with 5x away on plastic, i didnt really expect different. Always struggle on it.

I wouldn't fear just yet. Feyenoord are world class bottlers, and the choking has already started. They should hold on, but it's Feyenoord. I'm quite the vocal critic of Feyenoord as they have persistently let me down over and over and over again, more so than any other team. But I still like them (can't stand PSV and hate Ajax after the Celtic fiasco), and would love to see them finally win the league for the first time in about 15 years.

    Correction: 18 years

Home sides tonight trailing in all ties bar the United one, could be some good games.

As a lifelong fan, I'm sure you'll be the first to acknowledge Feyenoord's persistent collapses and shortcomings when the chips are down. Not trying to have a go, I do like them and would love to see them catch PSV and retake second spot on the roll of honour where they belong

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,863 ✭✭✭✭inforfun

That they havent won much in recent history has not much to do with bottling it.
Mostly to do with a much smaller budget than the other 2
Alongside came FC Twente who cheated their way to the top.

Feyenoord came up short but that isnt bottling it.
It is bottling when you just need to win away to De Graafschap who are 17th on the last day of the season and you draw. (Ajax 2016)
It is bottling when you just need not to lose at Excelsior, who had nothing to play for, and you lose, wasting the title on goal difference (Van Gaals AZ)

If you finish 3rd at 1 point with a points total that every season after that till now would give you the title, you dont have a lot of luck either.

Any time bar 1 time when they had a realistic chance of winning a price, they did in my time as a fan. they only lost a cupfinal in 2006. Other than they they won every final they played in

PSV might have won more league titles. Maybe they even catch up with Ajax one day.
But they will never more than the 3rd club of the top 3 in Holland.

As we say in Rotterdam: Feyenoord supporter ben je niet voor je lol. (You are not a fan for the fun of it)

You can call them any name you like. But not bottlers.

Tight ties tonight! I honestly couldn't call who I think will win the Europa outright right now as I can't even be sure the teams I'd pick will get through tonight!.

    Besiktas 2 Lyon 1
    (Agg 3-3)
    80 mins

    Schalke 2 Ajax 0
    (Agg 2-2)
    82 mins

KRC Genk 1 Celta Vigo 1
    (Agg 3-4)
    80 mins

    Man Utd 1 Anderlecht 1
    (Agg 2-2)
    81 mins

Besiktas keeper with a good double save near the end, then lacazzete hits the bar with seconds left

Couple of nice goals in Genk - celta, especially celtas

Multimatch is the job for this

So far of the 3, Schalke the only one that can't go to pens.

    <edit> united game now too

Cracking finish now in Schalke game.

yeah looks exciting Ajax down to 10 men since the 80th minute conceded in extra time to go 3-0 down on the night and now score to make it 3-1 and put them ahead on away goals!

Ajax,Man Utd and Celta Vigo through to the semi's.

I really hope Man Utd don't win the competitions now.Nothing against them but at least a UEFA Cup win would mean a lot to the the other 3 teams , whereas it won't mean anywhere near as much to Man Utd.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,050 ✭✭✭✭The Talking Bread

Ajax goal! God, Schalke are bottlers! 3 up with an extra man! No wonder they are struggling domestically

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,788 ✭✭✭highgiant1985

So the teams in the semi are

    1. Celta Vigo
    2. Man Utd
    3. Ajax
    4. Besiktas or Lyon... currently taking penalties to decide.

Any team stand out as favourites for any one from the above?

Ref doing his best to put Babel off.

I would imagine United would be around 4/6 to win it now. Ajax circa 5/1, Celta would be the outsiders

Doesn't the winner get into next year's CL?

I'm sure utd would love that guarantee in case they slip in the EPL spots.

So.it would mean plenty to them then.
