Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Sava. FFS!

    1-1

Awful kick from the Dundalk keeper. Sent the ball almost straight up in the air rather than down the field.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭sonic85

Oops. Horrible error that. Hope the heads stay up and they can see it out for the draw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,259 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

Just got home now and honestly thought that was Rodgers til I saw the hair on him. FFS!

Awful mistake, horrible after Zenit not even had a shot on target I think up to that

    AZ equaliser.

If both matches finish 1-1, this would be a very good night for Dundalk.

    Bad mistake that...

Hope they hang in there, what a result that would be.

    AZ equalise simultaneously

Agree with Jim Beglin, referee has been very good. Not giving soft frees like you usually see, but gets the cards out for anything nasty.

Feck that was well worked. Hope Dundalk can keep it respectable now, tiredness has to be kicking in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭sonic85

Hopes dashed. To be fair Zenit were always going to have some chances. They've really made the most of them. Pity

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,607 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Hang in there they'll get a chance to equalise near the end.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

Zenit are comeback kings, would be a shame if Dundalk don't get something from them.

Not a disgrace mind you, Zenit are infinitely richer after all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,384 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Tough on Dundalk. They hit the post which would have made it 2-0 and then a keeper howler leads to the equaliser. Looking tired now.

Plus Finns excellent chance in the first half.

    That's not a penalty

That was stupid by Gartland. Great save - terrible attempt at a penalty though

Those penalty attempts are a disgrace

Says a lot about Dundalk that a team like Zenit have come to Dublin and are time wasting to get out with the 3 points.

    Christ Sava. What was that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,521 ✭✭✭✭mansize

    What penalty???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭sonic85

Did Sava mean that or was it just a terrible free kick?!

    The latter.

Feel bad for Sava for tonight. It's clear though that GK along with RW are weak points for Dundalk.

Good game that. Massive opportunity missed though. Dundalk were well worth a point. Wasn't to be

We need az Tel Aviv to draw the return in 2 weeks and then it's all in Dundalk hands pretty much

    Group D Series 3

123px-Flag_of_Russia.svg.png Zenit Saint Petersburg 9 Points
    223px-Flag_of_Ireland.svg.png Dundalk 4 Points
321px-Flag_of_Israel.svg.png Maccabi Tel Aviv 3 Points
    423px-Flag_of_the_Netherlands.svg.png AZ Alkmaar 1 Point

If anyone thinks there's no good footballing team in this country they either need their head checked, don't know football or haven't seen Dundalk. To come away from Game 3 to be kinda disappointed being 2nd in the group is mental.

Definitely deserved at least a point on the balance of play.

5th game in 12 days. The FAI sentenced them to this defeat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Dundalk can take so many positives from that game, they really made the Zenit managers comments look totally bizarre.

Real shame the turning point was a Dundalk mistake, totally undeserved.

Overall a draw would have been a fair result. Very few chances either way. That Massey header if it went in would have finished it i'm sure.
Sava made a bad mistake with that miskick, but overall he looked solid. Gary Rodgers had made so many mistakes in europe & LOI games that he had to be dropped.

When you see Zenit bringing on Russia's main striker off the bench in 2nd half, it brings home what Dundalk were up against.

The way Dundalk always try to play the ball out from the back, and have midfielders looking for the ball from the backs. To lump it forward is a last resort. It's so good to see, and I wish the Irish team & Roy Keane who was there could learn from that.

Didn't deserve to lose. **** it. Still, roll on Sunday, should cushion the blow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,806 ✭✭✭corny

First goal was a real disappointment. Benson put Shields in trouble, Shields put Sava in trouble and the bobble ****ed everyone. All had better options available though.

Good performance. When fatigue wasn't a factor Zenit were toothless. Belief has to be growing that they can mix it with whoever. That's more than half the battle in sport.

Once again dundalk do us all proud.

You have to remember the level that Zenit are at. So many full professionals in their team and bench.

They regularly play in the CL groups.

Dundalk looked comfortable for a lot.of the game. That header hitting the post to make it 2 nil was the turning point. Fatigue was always going to catch up on them, due to their punishing schedule. ZENIT on the other hand have had plenty of rest recently.

What dundalk are doing is unbelievable. for me, they are cementing their place as probably the best LOI side ever. They look so comfortable against what on paper should be much better sides. The football they play is on a different level to what we have seen in the LOI in the past.

They deserved a point tonight, but they are still in it. Forget about the next game, Zenit will win. I'd nearly play a few squad men and take the beating. The games v AZ and Maccabi are worth resting as much as possible for.

The fact people are genuinely disappointed says so so much.

The good news is all distractions will be out of the way and they'll be able to prepare for the last two games. The fact that an Irish team will play a European game in early December with a chance of progressing is mind blowing tbh.

Agree 100%, if Dundalk had not played on Monday night just 48 hours before the Zenit game I believe they could have caused a shock here.
A courageous performance, every sports fan in Ireland should be proud of what this Team is doing.
I was in the West Stand and it was very interesting to see Neto come over to the Dundalk bench at the end of the game to seek out Chris Shields shirt, genuine respect for Shields who had an awesome game.

It's brilliant. I should not be a flash in the pan though. Hopefully Cork City and others can start making an impact in Europe as well.

These players are a real credit to themselves & the League of Ireland. Certaintly the greatest LOI team in my lifetime. The schedule they had to endure has been disgraceful.

The FAI can hang their heads in shame as they have probably played a part in the loss tonight as of course Dundalk tired a a bit but they were superb & deserved a draw. Now in 2 weeks they have the FAI Cup final just over 2 days after playing in Russia.

Also this team should be getting much more publicity than they are as well.

    Witsel on Dundalk

Were you impressed by how Dundalk played and were you expecting a certain style, a lower technical ability, what did you think of them?

We know kick and rush, but no they played good football and tried to win the game, it wasn’t the Irish style, not just long ball and fighting for every ball, we knew what to expect, we watched the videos before the game.

    http://en.fc-zenit.ru/news/feed/2016/10/21/aksel-vitsel-irlandskie-komandy-assotsiiruyutsya-so-stilem-bey-begi-no-dandolk-igral-po-nastoyashche/

    Lucescu on Dundalk

It was said that Dundalk don't play in a typically British way. Is that right?

We can see how they played by the result, they knew what to do in attack and in defence, they are a good team. They didn't play any long balls, as some had suggested, they played short passes and used a variety of combinations. They played at a high tempo and made quick decisions.

Good to see him answer the question:

Are Dundalk the best team you’ve played so far?

    With:
Yes they can play with this fighting spirit and this motivation they can qualify from the group.
