Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. There's a complex situation with the owner for Oriel that essentially prevents them from doing it at the moment. I wouldn't be too harsh on them on that point. Although, it is a kip!

Yes but it is our kip!!;)

Believe me it is more frustrating for Dundalk fans needing the ground upgraded. Especially facing having to play home European games 'away'. It is a complex situation that it seems now will be heading for the courts in due course. Until this is resolved and I believe it will be resolved and in the ground owners favour it wouldnt be too sensible to invest heavily in the place until the legalities are sorted once and for all! Never mind the sports capital grants that cant be applied for either currently.

Great days indeed , well done to Dundalk, Cork and Pats. Can remember those halycon days in Tallaght.....the stands would be packed with Bohs fans cheering us on in Europe.....

    City through 1-0 :D

    Cork through. Congrats to them.

Genk gone into extra time and they are now down to 10 men too.

Same amount of Scottish teams left in as Irish.

This is a very good year for LOI in Europe. Pats gave a great account of themselves as well.

Fantastic result. Hopefully Genk lose as Cork would have a fantastic chance against the montenegrin side.

Feel sorry for Pats. 1-0 feels harsh but they've given a good account of themselves all considered.

Hopefully Genk lose, will make the 3rd round a better prospect to get through. Delighted for City and Dundalk, the LOI teams very strong this year in Europe

    Genk win on pens

Savage atmosphere down the X tonight.

Defended too much but got there in the end.

    Delighted to be through!!

**** yeah, a Belgian team :pac:

    Hope Cork do them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,752 ✭✭✭pablomakaveli

Wasnt sure which was best out of the two. Genk are probably going to be tougher but a tie in Montenegro would have been expensive for the team and a tiring journey.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

Should be a great trip for Cork fans. Genk have a pretty decentground.

Does Turners Cross meet the requirements for the 3rd round of the EL?

I believe the requirements are as follows:
Unless stipulated otherwise in these regulations, matches in the competition
must be played in a stadium which meets the structural criteria of the following
categories as defined in the UEFA Stadium Infrastructure Regulations (2010
    edition):
    a) category 2 for the first and second qualifying rounds;
    b) category 3 for the third qualifying round and play-offs;
    c) category 4 from the group stage to the semi-finals;
The final must be played in a stadium which meets the structural criteria as
    defined in the staging agreement.

    Cat 2 - 1500 seats
    Cat 3 - 4500 seats
    Cat 4 - 8000 seats

So until Cork get to the group stages they can play at Turner's Cross.
Would be interesting to see what happens if they qualify though.

Not sure what the requirements are but I would be shocked if it doesn't, best stadium in the lge.

Yes. Don't think it does for the following one round though.

Maybe use Páirc Uí Chaoimh or Páirc Uí Rinn ?

But first perhaps try and get to the next round :pac:

They won't be using Páirc Uí Chaoimh anyway, since there isn't much of a stadium there :pac:.

Turner's Cross has more seating than Páirc Uí Rinn also.

Would Thomond Park be an option?

Don't follow GAA, I just looked for the biggest grounds. Might become an issue then...

It's pretty awful that there is probably 3 stadia in the whole of the country suitable to host Champions League group games that have hosted football before, and they're all rugby grounds with no actual league team playing there.

It would be the most obvious option as they were happy for limerick to play there.

That said, Genk are a step up but as tonight shows, they are beatable.

    Interesting times ahead.

Apart from the Aviva of course.

The FAI don't own the Aviva. So it's also a rugby ground.

They both own the Aviva. If the FAI doesn't own it than the IRFU doesn't own it either.

They both own the Aviva. If the FAI doesn't own it than the IRFU doesn't own it either.

FAI's development contribution to the Aviva bought them a 25(i think) year lease. Its the IRFUs ground.

Anyway worrying which ground to play out of is a good problem to have (altho obviously its a shame its an issue at all). For now, congrats Dundalk & cork. Unlucky pats.

    Wikipedia wrote:
Unlike its predecessor, which was solely owned by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), the current stadium is controlled by the IRFU and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) through a 50:50 joint venture known as the Lansdowne Road Stadium Development Company (LRSDC). The joint venture has a 60-year lease on the stadium; on expiry the stadium will return to the exclusive ownership of the IRFU.

From Wikipedia, it appears you're right. I only saw the 50:50 joint venture part and not the return to the exclusive ownership of the IRFU part .

It is a 60 year lease however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,224 ✭✭✭overshoot

In fairness 60 years is a huge length of time. The ground will need a major revamp or more likely rebuild by then, if not before it. They can always negotiate a similar deal then. For now they have equal claim so lease probably wasn't the correct term either.

The chances of Frank Murphy allowing Cork City to use a GAA ground are fairly slim anyway.

It would be interesting alright to see where Cork City would play home games if they got to the group stages.

Only option I can think of is Thomond Park.

Páirc Uí Chaoimh is a building site while Pairc Uí Rinn has less seats than Turner's Cross.

The RDS is the best halfway house for those in the Dublin and surrounding region (or at least it is if it is still available). Though this sort of thing is why I was very pleased for Rovers to keep their fixtures in Tallaght.

We tried hard last night, players gave their all but we just werent good enough. They were just that bit better especially in the first half. Dinamo were a really cynical side in the second half fouls all over the place and time wasting. Tracey and Fagan were both excellent last night but its a pity we dont have someone like a Forrester or a Finn like player because we just lacked that creativity in the midfield.

Eamonn Sweeney in the Independent with a typically useless article complaining about people who won't go to Eircom League games but can't even get Cork's next opponents right, he thinks it is Gent

I'd like if earlier qualifying rounds were shown on TV ie the Linfield and Luxembourg games as it gives a chance to show off an Irish victory in Europe. I know BATE and other games of that ilk are bigger draws but to have televised coverage of LOI teams wining ties would be nice too.

What if they'd shown Rovers earlier qualifying round thinking they'd be showing off an Irish victory in Europe?

Only 1 out of 4 didn't progress. Playing the odds and picking a game at random, 75% would have been successes. So it would've worked out pretty well.

Heard ticket sales for corks home game were quite high from the start. Hope it's not just a runaround, last game showed Genk can be got at.
