1-0 not bad the way the game went. I can't see Dundalk going through but i hope they play their own game next week. Too many of them were too intimidated to play as they can.

BATE will go through; neither team will score at Oriel. .........

    That's 100% certain :pac:

That is very true, neither team will score in Oriel as the match is in Tallaght.

Dundalk didn't do themselves justice with their performance tonight. I think they will improve next week but will find it very hard to get through.

It was frustrating watching Gary Rogers boot the ball back to the opposition every time he got hold of it.

Dundalk feared them a good bit but still did very well to keep them out to 1-0 in the end.

Surely they'll come out and impose their possession game next week

I think people are forgetting that Dundalk were away to Champions League regulars in the middle of their season who were one point away from last season's knockout stages. They've also now got a (albeit old) Champions League winner in their ranks.
Dundalk are a fantastic LOI side but they are lightyears behind BATE. I can't see the game going much differently than today.

That's fine but control what you can control. If you play your usual game and its not good enough, so be it. If you let the fact you're playing a decent team get to you and play below par.....

Absolute rubbish. If Dundalk went out there and played the exact same way they play in the LOI it would have been 4/5-0 minimum!

That goes for most teams in the champions league. Make a mistake and you're punished.

Sure a couple of years ago there wasn't a team in the Champions League who had the bottle to play their own game against Barca! No one will ever forget Ferguson trying it in the CL final at Wembley only to be crucified.

I don't think people are giving BATE enough respect. Lets not forget they almost got out of a group containing Barca, Roma and Leverkusen last year... 0-0 draw away to Roma where one goal would have sent them through in second place. This is a seriously talented side.

Saw a post on twitter there that Bate's turnover was €40 million last year.

Incredibly really. Dundalk did really well tonight.

I still expect them to string a few more passes next week though. Pity it's not in Oriel Park

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,752 ✭✭✭pablomakaveli

I think given the circumstances the result was great for Dundalk. Even though they're unlikely to win last week the tie is still alive at least.

That decision not to give the red card for that elbow to the face was an absolute joke though. Saw a clip of it last night and couldnt believe he got away with that. Dundalk have every right to feel aggrieved about that.

A great performance from Dundalk last night, although you'd have to fancy Bate to score away from home, which will put the game to bed.

But fair play, they showed the LoI is a lot better quality than many give it credit for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭CHealy

Think Dundalk were lucky last night, BATE's finishing was awful, really should have been more that 1. They will go all out next week to get an early away goal to kill the tie, think Tallaght will suit them better than Dundalk.

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Dundalk will be disappointed with their performance but will be reasonably content with the 1-0 deficit going into the second leg. Dundalk are much better than what they showed last night and can turn these guys over if they play well and BATE have an off day.

I think Dundalk will keep it tight for the 60-70 minutes, and then go all out to get the goal that they need to tie up the game. Hopefully they have a referee that doesn't let BATE off the hook like the last three have.

It was an absolute joke of a decision. It may have been coincidence, but I was puzzled at the start when I saw that a Ukrainian referee was taking charge of a Belarussian tie.

Because BATE said Oriel was too intimidating last year.

Oriel Park doesn't have the required media facilities and the floodlights don't meet the standard required for 3rd round.

Ironically, the pitch meets the required standards.

Last year was the 2nd Qualifying round, this year its the 3rd Qual round, as the rounds go on UEFA regulations become stricter. Should City somehow progress against Genk, we would not be able to play the playoff game at Turners Cross.

Hopefully it would be at Thomond park should it arise.

Pretty embarrassing for Cork that we do not have any stadium in the county up to scratch.

Why? The same stadium criteria apply for the 3rd qualifying round and the playoff round per UEFAs own regulations?

Well he did let off a wrestling style forearm attack on O'Donnell and an obvious hand ball in the lead up to the goal. But considering the amount of chances BATE had we cant complain too much with the tie still alive at least. Just short of 2000 tickets sold yesterday before last nights game and however many today, if that continues at all up until next Wednesday it could well be a very good crowd traveling up to Tallaght from Dundalk. Add in the neutrals that might go too and it could be a great atmosphere. Time to recover unlike the getting back to Dublin Airport Thursday morning and flying to Belarus on Sunday and we might be more in the game Wednesday. Best of luck to Cork tomorrow night. 2 LoI sides in the EL Play-off round would be a great achievement and a base to try and kick on from in futures seasons hopefully that didnt happen after previous false dawns on the European front. Consistent targets of going through 1 or 2 rounds from 2 or more clubs should be he ambition!

Would yiz not go cap in hand to the gaa or is there still a rule against association football being played on sacred grass?

When the price is right, GAA rules can be waived (see: rugby and football being played at Croker when Landsdowne was being rebuilt).

Though considering Thomas Davis' obsrtuction of Rovers' stadium build, I reckon the GAA aren't as fond of the LOI and they wouldn't stand to make as much money.

City playing very well, should have held onto the ball in the lead up though. Reckon we will get a chance or two to score in the next hour, their defence looks as if it can be got at.

They've picked McSweeney as the weak link and they're getting down that side too easily.

Bailey is their star player (along with Ndidi), so they would have played down the right anyway to be honest.

Was waiting for that. Spent 2 mins trying to sort it out after the goal. Seems like a right tool but who isint at 18 years of age. Looks like he could be a good player

Don't think we would have any gaa stadiums up to scratch either tbh.

City doing well here. McGuire is great but his finishing leaves him down. We just need to make sure not to concede a killer second in the efforts to get the away goal.

Cork playing well, getting in good positions. Well capable of getting an away goal here.
